I used a new gmail address to test out the phone when I first got it. I already started to install apps, etc, so I was wondering if its possible to change my gmail address I initially linked the phone with. I planned on resetting the phone and starting fresh, but changing just the email would save me time of reinstalling apps.

1. select menu -> settings -> applications -> manage applications
2. scroll down and click "Google Apps"
3. click the "Clear data" button (you will receive a warning, click OK)
4. go back to home screen
5. pull down the notification menu and click on the message "Your account must be updated"
6. follow the onscreen instruction until you get to where it asks you to "create" or "sign in", click "sign in" and enter YOUR new Google account info.

Turn on a screen lock pattern and practically no one could use your phone. Possibly you, if you forget the pattern. Do not set while drunk/stoned!

Worked for me!
The only thing is I did not get a notification message - step 5.
Instead, when I opened the "Market" app, I was prompted for my Google Account information.

Do you need to be connected to 3g to do this? Can we can use only wifi to sign in to my google account?

Don't know if anyone has figured out how to do this in more recent times - with Android 2.2 etc. (and in my case an Incredible). The original responses call for clearing data in "Google Apps" but there are a TON of Google apps - am curious if someone knows specifically which ones listed in a 2.2 phone need to be cleared to change GMAIL accounts. Of course Verizon support says a reset is required - period. In my case I don't even care about the purchased apps thing - I know that will be an issue that the apps won't update. I haven't purchased that many to worry about it. Any feedback appreciated. :)

This didn't do it for me. But then I didn't have any "Google Apps" application, and clearing the data for my gmail account didn't release it from the phone. It is still using the old gmail account...
had I known when I first got the phone that it would hook up so tightly to that gmail account, I would have chosen a serious one, not the spam account I now have it hooked up to. There's gotta be a way of changing accounts.

There is and it's simple, but commonly over looked.
Homescreen -> tab option -> Settings -> Scroll down until you see "Accounts and sync"
Now select the Gmail and select "Remove Account" - You can only remove the account if you've not installed any Apps from the Market. If you've installed Apps from the market, you will need to uninstall ALL of them before you can remove the account.
Alternatively, you can add additional Gmail accounts and rotate on which ever one you would one to use by selecting "Add Account" button.
Hope this helps.

I agree with OppfinnarJocke. I don't have "Google Apps" either. But surely you jest that the only other way to change accounts is to uninstall every app downloaded in the account being used. And then you have to delete the account? If you do that then you will loose your e-mail / calendar set-up. It is a big enough pain to receive exchange mail and calendars as it is without having to delete the account and start over.
What am I missing here?
I just want to retrieve an app that I purchased ....

Just to be clear, if I change Gmail accounts on my Android phone, will I lose applications I have purchased and installed using the old Gmail account?
I've recently started using Google+ and I'm using my normal Gmail account. My phone uses a different Gmail account and I want to link them so that I can upload pics and get feeds.
Basically, I want to have my phone use the Gmail account that I'm using for Google+ and drop the Gmail account I created for my phone, without losing access to my applications that I have purchased for my phone.
Sorry if I misunderstood.

I am having a very similar issue with G+. I hear you can talk to developers and get them to cancel what you previously paid in favor of a new purchase with another account. I'm also having problems with google voice, there is no way to transfer the phone number out of gv, or on to another one.

same here, htc hd2 andriod 2.2 running NAND no need for me to boot using SD. I found one at utube, however it requires to rename the firmware-*.apk. However the file is read only...got no work around it. :(
