did you try rebooting the phone. or maybe your router is setup to block devices?

Tried rebooting the phone? Sure you're connecting to the correct wifi? If the network uses WEP encryption, are you putting the correct key in? Does the WIFI connection work with any other devices? Do you use MAC filtering? If so, is the device's MAC added to the list of allowed devices?

I'm having the same problem with wifi. Under wifi settings my Dlink router shows, status is connected, speed is 54Mbps, signal stregth is excellant, security is open, and my IP address. But I can't get on the net orr use any app, like gmote. I don't know if its a setting in my router or what. If any one has any suggestions I sure would appreciate them.

i set it up correctly with the correct wep key, it connects perfectly fine, but if it does work it works for a second then it quits letting me use the internet with it. and wifi for the internet on this thing is kind of crucial since i live in utah and we don't have 3g yet. but edge seems to work decently.

has to be a setting in the router. if the phone shows it is conected, especially with an ip address, it's set up correctly and the router is blocking it somehow.

to rule out the router you might try setting your phones IP address to the DMZ on your router and if it works then you definately have a setting issue on the router, if it does not work i would say go drive around town and find an open wifi to log onto to double verifiy that it is not your router

I just realised something missing in the WiFi settings -- On my Nokia E51, I can assign a proxy server to each WiFi access point.
Such a feature would allow users like me to use the WiFi network in my office (proxied), at home (non-proxied), and everything in between.

Just incase this helps somebody out...I have a US Robotics wireless router, all my other devices connected fine but when the G1 connected, it would not let me browse the internet etc.
I found that changing the wireless encryption from WPA2/AES to WPA2/TKIP solved the problem.
Hope this helps somebody.

im running into this same situation. WEP, connects, gets an IP but doesn't function. My old phone works and I'm not really looking to go change my AP settings (and all the devices that connect). I'm wondering if it's just this AP and the G1 but seeing other people with the same situation makes me wonder...
anyone have any ideas?

What are your AP settings RE: wireless encryption/security/authentication?

What are your AP settings RE: wireless encryption/security/authentication?
WEP 128bit (26 hex)
it does connect, and it does get an IP. initially i was thinking it was dns issues so i set ip/netmask/gateway/ns's manually but that didnt work either.
whats weird is it seems to ping but only for a second then it falls off.
im trying to look and see what routes are there and what ips i have but im not familiar with the android os (nic names and such), but am very familiar with *nix's
oh yeah from my AP i can see my device and the IP, but it has no hostname, which I'm not sure why that would be, or matter.

It's definitely possible to associate with a wireless network and have no Internet capability. In fact, it's common. On my network the "real" stuff happens over VPN.

I needed to ensure my key was set to slot 1 before the G1 would connect. I hate that, as it undermines the reason for using a non-slot-1 key, but oh well.

ironically after some time it connected. i noticed the issue initially with the factory rc29 load. after putting the rooted rc30 on and waiting a bit it seems that wifi works without issue now. (after i posted of course lol) i'm not sure what to chalk that up to either not waiting long enough (which seems odd) or the update (maybe?) or just something else. either way it works now, thx!

Come to mention it, mine drops its connection sometimes. I have to disable then reenable the WiFi to get it back on, but since that always works for me it didn't come to mind. Maybe yours was having a moment of the same issue....?
Either way, glad it's fixed!

Mine connected really fast, and then yesterday I got the RC30 update, and since then the initial connection has been much slower.

I'd only had my phone for a few days, it came with RC29 loaded.

I had a problem yesterday when I changed muh router in the house. I could see it had an address but had no traffic. It didn't work till I changed the DHCP scope for some reason it was baffling. And as for the disable re enable to connect problem. I had the same problem when it would go to sleep it wouldn't reconnect to the wireless. It would say unable to obtain IP address. I factory reset phone and it's work great ever since.

Since I got the RC30 update, my wifi at work has acted odd. I changed the encryp/auth from WEP to WPA2/PSK-AES and now it connects really fast. As good or better than it did before RC30.

And for those of you with routers like my Motorola, some of them have a whitelist/blacklist of MAC addresses, so be sure you don't have this set. If you do, though, you'll get zero connection -- not even a dead IP address -- until you whitelist the MAC.

Hm... I had some WiFi issues today, and I recalled that I had similar issues with my Palm TX -- same router, client was able to associate but could not obtain an IP via DHCP. Rebooting the phone/Palm didn't do anything, but rebooting the router fixed it as before.
So try rebooting your router if you could?
