Well, my Nov 10th preorder just got here. I played with the phone this morning, and honestly, if TMobile had shipped it out earlier, before I had had a chance to pick up an Iphone for 200 on Craigslist, Unlock, and Jailbreak it, they would have had my contract extension.
I do like the phone. I really like the keyboard, I don't mind flipping it open to type, it's nice having real keys, coming from my Blackberry Curve.
The GPS had me about two blocks off from work, yes, this was after turning it on, maybe the sat's didn't pick me up.
I honestly think it's the best phone T-Mobile has to offer, and like I said, if I didn't have access to a brand new iphone for 200 bucks, I definatly would have kept the G1 for 179.
Yes, it is plain. It's not going to hold a candle next to the Iphone in looks, but we all knew that first.
The setup took 30 seconds at most, and all of my contacts were in and ready to go.
The internet is faster than my Iphone.
Big deal for me is the G1 data pricing. 25 - 35 bucks, compared to my 5.99 Tzone iphone hack. I'm a paycheck to paycheck guy. 20 bucks helps.
Tried the bar scanner twice. Scanned a pack of paper, and it showed up as a 6 pack of action figures. Okkaaaayyy..
Anyhow, as I said, I'm sure the Android OS will be great. Is this G1 for me? Since I have the Iphone for the same price, no it isn't. I would never go to ATT for an iphone, but since it's able to be unlocked for Tmobile, and I can get full data for 5.99.. well that's a tough bargain to pass up. I do miss having some kind of blinking light to let me know when the Iphone has a message or email or missed call on the lockscreen, I tend to miss texts because of that. Is the G1 worth the price of 179? Definatly. For all of you who are enjoying it, great :)
Here's a few screenies of my Iphone theme, I really like it, wonder if someone could do the same for the G1?
OH, and I am no way an apple fanboi. I can't strand the Mac OS, I own a Dell XPS 1530. I just like a product that looks nice, and works well for me. To each his own.

with no 3g it will take you 5x as long to get information.. and with no gps you'll be 10 blocks less accurate..
Can't argue about the 5.99/mo price, but since it's not sanctioned, theres no telling if you'll always be able to get that deal..

The 5.99 hack has worked for quite some time. If they every do fix it, data is 20 bucks a month for non G1 phones. And my area will not have 3g with T-Mobile till mid-late next year according to reps. Hopefully by then they will have a nicer Android phone available, something a little less boring looking than the G1.

Side by side, The iPhone beats the G1. I would have an iPhone as well but I was holding out on the notion that the G1 would offer UMA over the T-mobile network (similar to their other smartphones). Sadly, this was left out of the G1.
I am happy with my G1. In time, we will see new phone models, new apps and new software releases which potentially could become the very best platform.

The problem I AM having with the iphone is people are saying they hear echoes when they call me.
And it seems everytime I am doing something with data, I can't receive phone calls, which is driving my GF completely crazy.

I am coming from a iPhone on T-Mo -> G1 - and I must say I am enjoying the G1 a lot more, but then again I am a sucker for 1st gen stuff ;)
The echo issue was a problem in some units - the latest firmware helped some folks on the lose the echo on the iPhone, but not all - I'd give the G1 a run for the money, it's affordable, easy to use, and in time hopefully it'll take off and more and more software teams will release great apps!

ya, you just press home while you're on the phone and you can do anything you want while conversating. i thought it was pretty darn nifty. and edge speeds are actually pretty fast. gotta love them for that. also, not paying for firmware updates or apps(til jan) is awesome. there are so many great apps. plus, once the battery dies on an iphone, you're SOL.
well, good luck deciding!

You should have at least tried to get the Iphone 3G. T-mobile's 3G network would have worked on it and everything. Now you have to settle for EDGE, which is a thing of the past.

I thought the iPhone 3G will not work on T-Mobile's 3G network. At&T and T-Mobile's 3G signals operates on different frequencies..or something like that...

T-mobile updated their 3G frequencies so now it works fine on the network.

Sorry, but you're misinformed. The carriers use different bands for thier 3g Network.
ATT:850/1900
T-Mobile: 1700(US)/2100(international)

2.1 firmware. I'm gonna stick it out. Screw it, the phone is just so much more polished than the G1. The G1 feels more like a toy than a polished piece of equipment.
Thanks for the advice...

This teardown from iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/iPhone3G) reaffirms what we had thought:
Apple used the Inferion BGA736 (http://www.infineon.com/dgdl/bga736l16.pdf?location=Products.Discretes.Small_Si gnal_Discretes___RF_.RF_MMIC.UMTS_LNA.DATASHEET.bg a736l16.pdf&folderId=db3a304314dca38901154129d9cc161e&fileId=db3a304319c6f18c0119eba892fe5309), a 3 Band (800-900)/1900/2100MHz chip.
It is missing the critical 1700MHz band that would allow it to work universally on the U.S. carriers 3G networks. So you will be able to use the 3G portion only on ATT, and in Europe. But that would not stop you from cracking the 3G iPhone and using only EDGE on T-mobile’s network becuase it would still need EDGE radio to fall back onto on ATT’s sparse 3G network.
As for visual voicemail, I doubt seriously that you will see it working because this requires an upgrade on the carriers and of things. And why would T-Mobile spend money to support a feature on a phone they technically don’t support. Now T-mobile in Europe does sell the iPhone, and has visual voicemail but again why spend the money here.

I get calls on GPRS and EDGE.
Last post from me on this.
iPhone 3g (http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html)
Bands: GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
HTC Dream (http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html)
Bands (3g): Europe: 2100 MHz / US:1700/2100 MHz
AT&T (http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/net_usb3.shtml)
3g Bands: 3G 850/1900
T-Mobile (http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm23715.htm#7)
3g Bands: 3G 1700MHz and 2100MHz
so...facts? screenshots?

You obviously have to do what you have to do (and if saving money is a big part of it then so be it), but I have to argue with you, I think the G1 is fantastic and has worked flawlessly for me since day 1.
I had to fight with the Iphone to keep my gmail up to date, their was no true "push" and then the two in boxes rarely synchronized. The app store has definitely grown since I last saw it (3 months ago) but I only used a handful of apps, where as with the G1 I have already downloaded and use multiple apps with some SERIOUS potential with some future apps.
Is the G1 perfect for every user in every situation? No. But i think you are putting far, far, far too much stock in the sexiness and forgetting the current and future potential of the two devices. The notification, multi-tasking, real keyboard (with a virtual one coming), topped with its open app store simply blows the Iphone away for me. This is without even mentioning the full google implementation that works similar to the Blackberry enterprise server, keeping everything up to date over the air almost instantaneously. It is amazing, all this for a phone on firmware 1.0, no updates and on a brand new operating system.
Color me impressed. I will stick with my "not sexy" G1.

You can't use data and be on a phone call at the same time. However, you can receive incoming calls while you are surfing the net. It just breaks the data connection while you're on a call. It's two different scenarios.

By the way, cruise on over to HowardForums and check out the feedback on the iPhone boards.
People complaining about Safari crashing after numerous updates and almost two years, people complaining that they can't text in landscape (I guess Apple hasn't implemented a horizontal virtual keyboard, don't have an iPhone, so I'm just assuming), no photo attachments to mms??? (what's up with THAT? I mean, you've to what's supposed to be the ultimate multi media phone on the planet, but you can't send your girlfriend a photo from your phone of the new car you're thinking of buying, or a purse you think she might like...and the phone has a camera....), poor battery life...
I'm not trying to bash the iPhone. I have family that LOVES it.
But don't think the grass is greener, and that the iPhone, even after a year and a half, is problem free.
Oh, and one of the coolest programs on the G1, in my opinion (well, two or three programs... ShopSavy, CompareShopper and Scanner) don't work on the iPhone, and from what I've read, never will. Something about the iPhones camera not being sufficient to scan...

lol.
Your friend would have the rarest Iphone 3G ever made.
The ability of the phone to connect to certain bands is a part of the hardware, not the software. Even if the logo at the top says 3G (which anyone with a jailbroken 3G can do), it's not getting it unless it's on AT&T's network, or maybe a couple other networks avaible over sea's that have the same band in their network.
Sorry man, just isn't happening otherwise.
