Small question to all who are still to receive the update;

If/when your phone indicates that it wants to install the update, please hold of on updating but please check your memory card.
I would like to know if TMo/Android stores the update on the SD card prior to install.
If that's the case, then I could just maybe update my phone after one of the guys/girls in the US can copy the update for me.

Reason for me to think this?

If you boot your G1 holding the home-key and power, you get to a mode (Android System Recovery) where you are able to execute some system tasks. One of them is "apply sdcard:update.zip". This leads me to believe that the update which you guys get OTA, is stored on that SD.

Anyway, by now you get my point. So, if you like, and haven't had the update yet, do me a favor. Please?

Thx in advance for reading/responding.

yeah stillmackn, .. htc programmed a self destruct sequence into the phone

OP: applying an update off the sdcard may be an option meant for a service rep, which would mean theyd have access to these updates but not us

Hey DarkriftX do you have a link to RC29?

DarkriftX

Seems this is the latest one despite being called RC28. This was sent by the android updater to a users phone a few hours ago.

Thanks guys. I'll check it out tomorrow. Don't really care if I brick the phone anyway.

I read here first, then xda.
Was about to come back here and post but you've beaten me to it.

Thx

I was afraid I bricked my phone at first, it probably took around 5 minutes from telling it to update to it booting back to it's desktop.

How did you guys get it to work? My G1 keeps on saying can't mount the sdcard and can't file update.zip

Maybe your sdcard is on the fritz.

Charlie

Format the card as FAT.
Then put your update on the card and insert.
Power-on with the power+home combo and you should be all set.

I can access the files on it just fine, both via the G1 and my computer. No problems with reading and writing files on the card. That should mean it's fine, right?

Some of the guys over on xda had a similar issue the first time they tried. It seems the phone may not mount the SD card under certain conditions. Someone over there gave an exact procedure that got it to mount so that he could run the update. (Sorry, I haven't tried it myself, yet.)

The formatting didn't work. I formatted the card by connecting my G1 to my computer via USB. Formatted it as FAT. Copied update.zip to the root directory on the card. Turned off the G1. Powered it back on with Home+Power combo. Did Alt+L to display the text. Then Alt+S. Same thing.

E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount SDCARD:update.zip

Any ideas? The SD card is the one that came with the G1

I read over the entire thread but couldn't find a solution. The only thing one guy mentioned was to go into the bootloader first. The bootloader doesn't do anything. I had to pull the battery to restart the G1.

Make sure that you have the option of not using the SD card as storage in the settings, that might help you.

Try formatting your card in NTFS or FAT 32, see if that makes a difference. And double check that the file you downloaded, downloaded correctly. It worked perfectly for me.

I had the same issue. But I formatted using a card reader.
Try that maybe?

Ok, I will try FAT32 and see what happens...

The problem is I don't have a card reader for microSDs. I would think the card they supplied has been formatted correctly. As for the file, I downloaded it directly from google, so it should be correct.

Nope. Didn't work. Why is this update process so buggy? I mean if the recovery utility can't even read a card that is recognizable by the rest of the system, isn't that a bug?

Well there might b a problem with ur microsd card, that wouldn't b a bug more of like a failsafe in my opinion, so you dont brick your phone if there are any unreadable sectors in ur sd card...

Mine was plugged into my computer. The SD card was unmounted, though.

This method works great, but idk if its a coincidence that the market keeps on giving me network errors whike the browser works fine. Also maps isn't working correctly as well, is this happening to anyone who didn't do the update manually?

Stanovoy

I give up. 2 microSD cards and several hours later, still nothing. I think the G1 is pretty retarded for not seeing the cards at all. I want the update, but if the OTA update succeeds, then I will call this failure to recognize the two cards a bug of the G1. My reasoning is if it doesn't think my cards are "safe" enough to perform a manual update, why should it trust the same cards to perform the same update, only this time it is OTA?? There should be an update to fix this update problem.

Nope, they are working fine for me. I'm still on RC19 because my G1 is a little bit mentally challenged...

DarkriftX

That wont tell you anything because we found out the OTA update is downloaded to /cache and not to your card.

RegGuheert
10-31-2008, 01:15 PM
Really? There's more than 44 MB available in the /cache area? Is that located in RAM or FLASH? (If it's RAM, then it makes sense, but most here don't have that much FLASH memory available, unless it's in a different partition..)

WTF!! 3 microSD cards now and none of them works!! Maybe I should get a card reader and format my cards through that instead of the G1. I'm beyond frustrated right now :mad::mad::mad:

It indeed works. I used a 4gb card and it worked fine my first time trying it without any problems. It is in fact RC29, so no one has to worry. YAY, no more RC19!

I used an 8 gig card, no formatting involved, make sure you have the phone disconnected from your computer...

FYI Tmobile's forum says not to do the update manually. They are not sure what the OTA will do when it is sent to your phone.

I got mine already, but I think manual update should be only for those that unlocked the phone and using a different network/carrier...

No need to rush on this, it will come eventually...
