I Got Mine. Went to the Official Launch thing at Oxford Street, stood outside in the cold for and hour, was interviewed by CNN got a whole bunch of goodies and of course my phone.:)
Met nice people in the queue, at least one of them was a lurker here (sorry didn't get you name.

I don't know if this thread will be as full as it could have been. Upgrades not available until January.

Got mine at 8:20am in Southampton this morning - only me and one other person buying at that time, but that's probably for the best as they only had ten in stock, 3 black and 7 white!
No goodies for us though -- were they any good? Shame that us non-Londoners get second-rate treatment in goodie-distribution!

This is not true. I am an upgrader and I got mine on flex 30 (paid £70 for phone). It did take them a while to sort out and it probably helped that I was at the official Launch and All top bods from T-Mobile there along with the press. Obviously they didn't want to have anyone being pissed off in front of the cameras.
As for the freebies I got lots, some in the queue while waiting (they served us coffee) and once there were problems with my account they really flooded in. In total I have.
1 T-Mobile Golf Umbrella
1 Red Google Drawstring bag
2 google spiral notepads
4 YoYos (3 Google 1 T-mobile, Google ones light up)
3 Google Pens
4 Tubs of Assorted sweets (T-Mobile Branded)
On top of this I was interviewed for CNN (while waiting in the queue).
So all in all I rated it worth getting up at 5am for (I live out in Essex but work in London)
I am sorry that others have had bad experiences today, I know that this was badly run by T-mobile both here and in the US, but once you get the phone the problems will fade away.

I think that, like you say, being at the official launch helped. The T-mobile website was still offering pre-registration this morning (don't get me started on that pathetic fiasco) at 9am, and going into a store just elicited the 'new customers only - upgrades in january'. Rang 150 to sort things out, but was on hold for so long, I just dumped the contract. In the other UK thread, monkeybutler describes his 'offer' of £300 on a £25 tariff. By the time most of us could get the G1, we'll be paying for apps that new customers are downloading for free. Hardly good customer relations.
Still, let's be positive here, enjoy the G1, the specs suggest that it's going to have a longer life than some sites predict - it might be a first gen Android device, but the spec is way above what was being predicted earlier in the year.

yes i was an upgrader too - it was free on ermm... combi 35 (£40 a month)
i was all set to grab the CEO if they made me pay for it.
which in fact i did - and said - i hope you dont charge me for upgrading.
and they didn't! :)
compared to the my tmobile site
which wanted £80 for me to upgrade to an N95 classic on flex35.
so far i like it. but time will tell -
theres going to be lots of stuff coming that will make it way better
i wish there was a virtual keyboard option too
sometimes it not going to be convenient to flip out the keyboard
but at least the transition is lighting quick.

Have to be careful here, since I don't want to sound like I'm sucking sour grapes. Well done on your deal, but the store I went to didn't even care to discuss it - it was 'new customers only, upgrades not available until January'. Not to keen on giving them two contracts (even if it is just for one month). Am tempted to go after G1, but then remember that, should a better Android device arrive, I would have to go through the same garbage all over again.
Can comfort myself with the fact that if they ever do dish out a 64 mb OTA (as the online user manual suggests as a possibility), it would be almost impossible in my area!

are you out of contract?
the promo emails also said - tmobile customers already - log into my tmobile to find out how to get one first
or something similar?
have you tried online?

I don't think that login thing did anything other than take you through to their usual upgrades page, which doesn't feature the G1 yet.
I can't believe other people have been getting the phone on decent tariffs for around £70 though - this roll-out has been so ridiculously uneven. T-mo must just be banking on keeping more high-tariff customers to cover the loss of existing customers they mess about on lower tariffs who then leave.
As for me - well after being messed around for a few hours (see the other UK G1 thread) I went into town. Got the same fob off story from the two T-mobile stores in the city (Edinburgh) about "nothing until January", so I'm now the happy owner of an iPhone and over the 18 months it'll leave me at least £150 better off than if I'd paid up for a G1. You may not be able to haggle with Apple/O2, but at least I know I'm not going to be paying over the odds just because I wasn't in the right place at the right time. Kudos to anyone who got a good deal, but that doesn't help the rest of us who have been left in the lurch.
I really don't get the angle T-Mobile are going for by deliberately pricing a lot of potential customers out of the market and having no leeway for customer loyalty - they may as well have a sign outside that says "Not willing to drop £300+ or £40 a month? Not a new customer? Then piss off, the O2 shop is that way>>>".

When they announced the deals, compared to other phones in their line up, I thought that, perhaps, T-Mobile were getting handsets subsidised by Google - with today's events, that obviously isn't the case (better not be, anyway).
maclondon - upgrades were saying no deals until this afternoon, and as monkeybutler says, G1 is not listed. Android is probably the most important release for T-Mobile this year, and it was badly handled from the start. The responses to the pre-registering only turned up on Friday, and the so-called 'get it first' part equated to 'join the scrum'. The fact that the emails said check the upgrade deals when they weren't even available...
Suffice to say, I'm still interested in Android, but T-Mobile have acted in their own interests, when, considering this is the premier release of the OS, they should have been looking after the OHA.
Hey guys, thought id register here and say i got my G1 today.
Despite the my local T-mobile store hogging them for new customers, and after i went through some massive rigmarole with complaints etc i finally got my hands on a black one!
I upgraded & continued on flext 35 12months
2 questions: whats everyones firmware version (im on rc7)& where's the live messenger im bit?

Can I just remind all you new people about the UK Androids Social Group. This forum tends to be swamped by Americans Posting so anyone with UK related enquiries is better off posting them in the SG where others in the UK will be able to find it easier.

Got my G1 for the bargain price of £9.99 delivered yesterday on a Flext35 contract with the web package thrown in (But I was renewing 3 contracts which had just expired on a business account, so I'm guessing that went in my favour! - oh, and the other 2 contracts were just for standard phones, so they probably balanced the subsidy in those against the G1 for me).
Quite happy with it overall, although my 2 bugbears are no msn client (using Meebo isn't ideal), and that wifi only supports open and wep encryption... come on T-Mobile/Google, catch up with technology and let us connect to WPA-PSK encrypted networks!!

Hey guys.
I got my G1 on T-Mobile today (new customer). I moved over my Orange number (after recently being messed around by them more than once). I used to have a Windows mobile HTC TYTN2...so looking forward to an OS that doesn't crash every 2 minutes.
I'm interested in using AIM...but apprently this isn't available for UK users?
I haven't used my phone yet, it's currently charging. I remember some of my old phones required like a minimum first charge of 8 hours. Does anyone know if this is the case for G1?
Thanks :)

IM+ is a pay client that does just about all chat methods. theres a free 7 day trial
its a mature product. i also expect there will be official and unofficial aim/msn etc.
in the market place soon enough
the old charge over night myth is not true - modern batterys are not effected like that
but they do take a few charge cycles to get to full capacity.

Ok...so I switched on my Gphone a few mins ago and tried to sync it with my already exisitng Gmail account. It keeps erroring, and says to call customer care. I called customer care, and the rep tells me that it can take up to a maximum of 24 hours before I can connect (he had an accent so I had trouble understanding the reason why).
I bought mine around 12 noon today...so will try again a little later. Did anyone else have this issue?

Got mine at 9am thursday in stafford (work in stafford). Fourty pound contract that comes with about 1000 more mins that I'll ever need and 2400 txts I'll never use per month but it was worth it. For years I've been on a £20pm contract with orange so the way I see it is the phone cost me £420 plus I now have no limits internet access on my phone so not bad really.
I work in the web apps industry so what I've seen with the G1 has really impressed.... its amazing how much goes on in the background thats nigh on invisible to the user.

Has anyone with a UK G1 updated to RC29 yet? Either manually or OTA?

We have a different version of the software, so its unlikely that we will receive RC29 OTA. I would not suggest that anyone tries to use the manual update method as there is a chance you could brick your phone.

Was anyone able to connect their G1 straight away? I still can't do it. I enter my Gmail username and password, it tries to link up my phone to my account and still fails. I know the T-Mobile rep said something along the lines of 24 hours to me over the phone, but I want to check if anyone else's took as long as this? I got mine this morning.

You could have got it on a £20pm contract and still got no limits internet access and only paid £199 for the phone...

Mine worked no problem in the time it took me to drive from the shop to work (about 30 minutes).
Do you have a signal strength icon in the notification bar? And a 3G or G icon with up/down arrows?
You could also try signing up for a new GMail account - if that works you know it's a problem with your existing account, if not then it's a problem with your SIM.
Mine worked right away but I'm in the US maybe things are done a bit different?

It's finally worked! WOOHOO.
Just synced my e-mails :-)
Is there a way I can set e-mail viewing to how it is on other phones and Blackberries? I'm just interested in text without any pictures (most of the time) and no need for horizontal scrolling...
Thanks!
