Not to get anyones hopes up cus I know the official rollout for the area isn't untill late November...but I have had 3g for the past two hours. I'm 5 miles outside the city. Hope it sticks.

Oh my God, I was just about to post this!!! I'm currently 20 miles outside of DC. I looked at my phone just now, and it said 3G! I really hope this sticks too. If so, T-Mobile kicks major ass. Oh yeah, the 3G signal is full!

I just tested Google Maps load time over the new 3G network. It is almost as fast as Google Maps on my computer! Boundary maps appear instantaneously for the most part. Sometimes, the blank tiles might take a second to fully load. I think that's negligible for the most part, especially compared to the 10-second average delays over EDGE. Good job for switching the network on a month ahead of time and not give us a crappy 3G like AT&T, T-Mobile!

T-Mobile haven't updated their coverage map yet for DC. I would like to see where I will and won't be able to have 3G in my area. I am about 4 miles south of DC and about the same distance east of the Potomac.

I was at a Washington capital game on Tuesday and I didn't get any 3g. I currently live like 35 mins away from DC so I hope I get 3g when DC rolls it out..

Well, my battery just went down 20% after 2 hours of constant 3G usage. That means I might be able to get 10 hours off one charge. I guess that's not TOO bad. Oh well.

I'm in NW Washington at work, inside a building...3g with one bar.

Yeah, I noticed this morning sitting my car outside of work (SE) that I was on 3G. I did some tests with Google Maps (fast tile-loads, even on satellite mode) and Youtube (low motion vids played great, even with just 2 bars of 3G). When I walked inside my building (where I am lucky to get one or two bars of signal anyway), it dropped to Edge, but it's flipped back and forth a few times.

I am stoked. But I noticed that when I tried to manually select the AT&T network (just to compare the signal level and speeds), I was told by the phone that my SIM card doesn't allow it. Anyone else have that problem?

You are kidding, right? First, I'm going to assume that your G1 is not unlocked. Thus, you can only use it with T-Mobile SIM cards. Second, I'm going to assume that you didn't put an AT&T SIM card in. With a T-Mobile SIM card, you can only get onto T-Mobile networks.

To answer your question, anyone, whom at least one of the above assumptions apply, will have this problem. :p

I'm in Rockville, MD. Got my G1 yesterday and have seen intermittent 3G connections (with down and up activities). But I can't seem to do anything with it. Today I haven't been able to use any Internet resource even with Edge...

Assuming you have a T-mo SIM in your phone, why would T-mo allow you to jump on the ATT network when their network is right here? They have to pay ATT for any usage their subs have on their network. That's why. You can get T-mo coverage or if you can't, T-mo doesn't have any service agreement with ATT in your area.

Apparently Tmo didn't activate the data plan I had agreed to when I ordered the phone. Call Tmo up and 3 hours later I'm in sweet 3G heaven!

Locaton: Rockville, MD (for non-locals, I'm 18 miles north of DC border)
Down: 757 Kb/s
Up: 125 Kb/s
Reliability: 90+% (6 connect errors to apps in Android Market in 1.5 hrs of continued use)

I was in DC today and it was the first time useing 3g . It wouldn't load so I had to restart my g1 then it worked. I don't think 3g is much faster then edge and edge is pretty dang fast if u ask me. I don't get all the hype about 3g when it's like maybe 5 seconds faster then edge.

Update 12/10: Speed went down as more users hop on the spectrum, as expected.

Up: 512.9 Kb/s
Down: 113.8 Kb/s

How does this fare with ATT?
