I ordered the G1 on 10/17/2008. I went to a T-Mobile store at noon on the 22nd, expecting the G1 to be sold out. I just wanted to play with one. When I found out that the store, in a major metropolitan city, had plenty in stock, I called T-Mobile to see if they would cancel my order so I could purchase the phone from the store. I called, in total, 6 times, and each time I was told that the preorders could not be cancelled and I would be charged full price at the store instead of the upgrade price. I was also told that the order would ship out on the 27th.
I have yet to get a UPS confirmation number or receive the phone. I can walk into a T-Mobile store now and purchase one easily, albeit for full price. As further insult, I can walk into a Walmart, 7 days after the official release, and purchase the same phone at a discount of T-Mobile's special price for its own customers.
I know that I could have preordered for the first shipment, but the fact that some people who ordered after the 21st have already received their phones, and shipped overnight as well, is insulting. T-Mobile has great customer service, and the 6 times I called them, every representative gave me their best response based on available information. Despite this, I still feel that T-Mobile severely over-anticipated demand for the phone and mishandled the preordering. Even if I had preordered in the first batch I would be upset that Walmart sells the phone a week later at a discount.
T-Mobile should have eaten the shipping/return shipping costs and just allowed retail stores to sell the phones to those of us who preordered.
Whenever I receive the phone I plan to ask T-Mobile for a credit for the difference between Walmart's price soley on principle. Otherwise I will return it and drive to Walmart.
Does anyone feel the same way?
