Ha - stupid me. I thought I would be able to buy one of these at Walmart. After educating everyone at Walmart on the fact that this was a phone and they would be selling it (I started yesterday), I finally have a confirm (after confirming the opposite), that they will NOT be selling this phone outside of 3G networks. I live in NC, and the closest place that MAY have one is DC. I feel like I just got *itch slapped. After going round and round, and even calling the corporate offices (they were clueless also), they should give me a dam phone just for the education I just gave them about a product they are selling. Let me know if you see one of these phones out in the wild in NC.

you should still be able to purchase it off the web and use it in NC. Just won't have 3G for a while. You probably already know that.

Well - given some of the issues that I'm reading about in this forum, I'm a little nervous about being a lone ranger. I just feel that I already cannot get a straight answer about anything here without major detective work. I mean it took me a full day just to find out if any Walmarts near me would be selling. I ran into the same problem with Best Buy. I just don't know right now

I knew that it would only be participating stores. The problem was finding out which participatings stores. Seeing that Walmart just realized today that they would be selling them, they had no idea on which stores. That was too hard for anyone to figure out.

I don't think this is accurate. I'm from NC and travel between the two. I beleive the problem is that NC is one (perhaps the only) of the few states T-mobile has no service in, so it would be because they have no network at all.
If you can buy the phone and contract from another state, and take the phone to NC, you will roam onto AT&T or Sprint networks. The phone will work, but likely at non-3G speeds (however you could WiFi to make up for that).

Walmart confirmed that they are selling OTHER t-mobile phones in NC, but they are not selling this one because of no 3G.

That would be a WalMart market decision then. See what a T-mobile store will do for you.

T-mobile does not want you to use the phone here or else they would be selling via brick and mortor just like in places that they want you to use the phone in. If it is so awsome on edge - then what would make a retailer decide to actually lose money by not making the phone available in all outlet equally?

I thought that it was understood that they didnt want the phone sold outside of 3G markets INSTORE.. I ordered one online no problem. This is coming from a person that has had a t mobile sidekick over here for 5 years... When tmobile wasn't here..I just had an Atlanta phone number.. tmobile used to not even sell devices here under new contracts. You had to request an address change after your purchase if you wanted bills or phone upgrades sent to your NC address. And then when tmobile announced they were coming here, you could order tmobile phones, but they still gave you area codes from other t mobile states. One of my friends got an Alambama number for her sidekick, one got DC, and one got Atlanta, even though they were sent here to their homes. When i ordered my G1, i got my own area code here in NC, letting me know that THEY WILL SELL YOU ONE IN NC it just has to be ONLINE.. I went back to the store they said 1st of the year they would be instore....this was at the Greensboro store...
Oh and one more thing if you are constantly around wifi you have no need for 3G..I didnt even have a data plan by some error made by tmobile for the first 2 days, and i used wifi NO PROBLEM...and then when i did get the data, the edge was plenty fast for browsing...Not Youtube, or the market of course but for browsing it was great...
