View Full Version : Did you know you were a beta tester?

So with each passing day my love for the G1 seems to dwindle more and more. If it's not one thing, it's forty others. Just a small list of shortcomings I have encountered:

Email Problems - So far the GMail app has worked pretty well, despite the fact that it says I have 4k new emails, and every time I delete a new email it downloads and old email and says it's new, I can live with that. The EMAIL app however has been a whole different can of worms. Not only does it make emails I've read new again, it occasionally just decides to stop working...only one on mailbox...only some of the time. Twice I've had to remove the same mailbox and re-add it to get it to work. Also, why does it not auto-populate the address/sbj lines when you open an email link in the browser? This seems like really juvenile and basic stuff that Google missed.

Call Waiting - I don't even know if the phone has this feature. I've read on here some people saying they've got it to work, and others saying they can't figure it out. My phone never gave me any kind of notification when my friend called me last night while I was on the phone. I checked the settings and the box was checked for "When Busy Route Calls" but wtf does that even mean? It should just be "Call Waiting: On/Off."

Instant Messaging - So I figured out (with the help of AC) a way around the whole "sending IMs to myself" thing by removing the spaces in my screen name (kind of lame.) But that still doesn't account for the random sign offs, and why the hell does it move people out of their group when you start a conversation? That just makes no sense to me.

MMS - Cannot save picture messages. WTF? And what's with the limits on the SMS threads? It doesn't have an official limit, but if you get too big, then everything starts lagging horribly. My girls iPhone doesn't do that...and boy does she remind me of it! ):

Network Issues - Several times now I've had to deal with severely delayed text messaging. Typically in the evening/night time. I will send text messages and people will not get them for 20-30 minutes, and vice versa. This is hugely unacceptable, as I do the majority of my communicating through text messages (I'm on the phone a lot at work, and try to avoid talking on the phone when off.) This was happening to me last night so I called TMO CC and got sent to PDA Support after being told it "wasn't a network issue." PDA Support said it "sounds like a network issue" and really couldn't do much for me. Blamed it on "high network traffic because the G1 was released." This just seems like a cop out, TMO is one of the largest Cell companies in the world, they should've been better prepared for something like this. They've had other fairly large scale releases of phones, new sidekicks, other PDA phones, etc..., and I never noticed any kind of problems like this when I had my sidekick. Regardless of the reason, this is totally unacceptable.

I'm sure there's more things I could list off, but those are what is bugging me right now.

They say that "it just works" is the defacto slogan for Apple products, but I'm beginning to think that "it just doesn't work" is the new slogan for the G1. There have been nothing but problems since launch, which have really soured me on this device. I want to believe that the G1 will be an amazing device, and I do still believe this is possible (though wtf is up with the OTA????) but it's beginning to look like turning this thing into a worthwhile, fully-functioning device is going to be more of a long-term project and I don't know how much crap I can put up with in the short-term.

If this was a phone from T-Mobile and "Joe's Software" then I could understand these bugs and issues, but reports of a Google based mobile OS surfaced almost two years ago and who knows how long it was in development before that. This hardly seems like something that somebody spent two-plus years on. I feel like I'm using the Windows Millennium of mobile OS's. It just really doesn't look good for Google, such a pioneer, and enormous tech company, to release such an incomplete product. I'd of rather waited till December for launch and got something that works at least 90% of the time, than get it in October and have to pray for updates/3rd party devs to fix all the problems.

Like the title says, I paid $350 for a kick ass phone, I didn't pay $350 to be a fkn beta tester! Ugh.

This is a Google product, most of their stuff is in beta. You actually did pay 350$ to be a beta tester. If you didn't know that when you bought it you probably didn't do much research on the android OS. I'm not trying to be harsh I just don't understand why so many people seem to think this is a finished product. I knew it was beta and buggy, I bought it because I can deal with problems and have fun trying to figure them out.

No you paid $350 to be an early adopter! What did you expect with a version 1.0 OS?

Pardon me for expecting some basic functionality out of the phone. Is it that shocking of me to expect to be able to save MMS pictures on a PDA DEVICE IN 2008? Is it too much to ask for applications that don't randomly kick you offline and email apps that work right? And the V1.0 OS doesn't account for the network problems.

I expected headaches, and in all honesty, most of the software bugs I can live with until they get fixed, the network issues are the ones that are really upsetting me.

LMAO @ all of you guys. That's cool. I'm no longer 13, so I don't intend to fight with you on the internet. I was just saying my piece. If you got a problem with it, then that's for you to handle.

I can tell judging by the size of that post and the detail you provide that you are upset. Unfortunately the G1 is not for everyone. Yes it’s the first android phone out there which means its going to have bugs and things that don’t work right but that should be expected with any new product. The iPhone had many issues when it first came out but you probably didn’t follow the issues that it had since the media had you concentrated on the hype of the phone.

I think if we are all patient patches will be coming out to address all if not most of the phones bugs. It’s just a mater of how patient can you be. But I feel sorry for all the people out there that bought the G1 and thought it would be were the iPhone is right now. If you can’t live with all the bugs and be patient then returning it would be your only option.

Once again am sorry for your troubles as i have been using my G1 since the 20th and had a few glitches and bugs but nothing very serious. Overall i am very happy.

O yeah and one more thing. Thanks for not just starting a new thread saying something like “This phone sucks I hate it” and not providing any insight on what your upset about.

I hear ya. Ive been seeing a lot of complaint threads lately, and i am very sorry to hear. I too am experiencing a vast majority of problems, many of which you are encountering as well.

There needds to be a forum for I hate my G1 an constantly complain about it, maybe one of you complainers needs to make that domain...www.Ihatemy g1.com so you can all go there and bash it together, just dont do it here. There are already tons of threads just like this one with people experiencing the same type of problems you had, most if you read the threads have solutions and work arounds to solve a lot of the common problems nagging the G1 its been put for a week get a clue, if you want to have it work as well as your Girlfriends Iphone which is in its second build version and has been out for years now, go F ing get one and STFU

I expected headaches, and in all honesty, most of the software bugs I can live with until they get fixed, the network issues are the ones that are really upsetting me.

Were you a Tmobile customer before the G1? I have been for about 4 years now and from time to time they do have network issues...I have had text messages to a Nextel user in California(I'm in RI) take 26 hours to get to her. But for the most part Texts are normally pretty quick and you do have to expect some lag when a new phone like this has been released. AT&T's network was knocked down quite a few times after the first IPhone launch. Hell even Microsoft's servers were knocked down last xmas with all the new 360 users. TMobile is a speck of a company compared to both of those companies. I am actually impressed TMobile's network held up as well as it has.

As for the basic functions missing in this phone, they should be there. But Google spent more time on the OS, Memory Mgmt and all of the very important stuff the end user never sees. I am glad they did, if not we would just have another WinMo, snazzy UI and a ****ty, unstable OS.

Tell that to the OP. This guys actually said he wasn't sure if G1 had call waiting. I guess reading the screen when another call comes in is just way too hard. All you do is press menu and then choose to switch with or without hanging up. WOW. TOO HARD. Did i want to type this out? no. Why am wasting my time doing it? I'm not sure.

Basically it comes down to this guy went ahead and bought something without thinking about whether or not it was the right thing for him and then decides to place blame on the company he purchased from. Typical self centered behavior and i really just don't have any tolerance for it anymore. To people like that i say GFY

Gmail has been out and functioning for a couple years now... and it's STILL beta.

Google Calendar? Still beta.

Google Docs? Still beta.

There's definitely a pattern here lol. Google products categorically have extensive beta periods; and you have to keep in mind that the main problem people are having may not be with the Android OS itself, but with the INTEGRATION with this particular HANDSET. It is ALSO a 1st gen device that's only been out for a week so... considerations need be made there as well.

I'm not saying you should just be content with the phone if you feel it doesn't meet your standards... but given Google's history, this is actually fairly expected lol. Google makes SOFTWARE. How that software integrates with hardware hasn't been their focus.

How long has G-Mail been out? For those of you that don't know G-Mail is still in beta, Google's methods referring to beta are a bit different than that of most companies. The fact that Android is still in Beta doesn't mean much, its just the way Google does things.

@op

I bought the G1 to watch Android evolve into a user contributed mobile phone experience. This is version 1.0 of a brand new phone OS. And the Android SDK was released a couple days before the G1 even went on sale. That means that every app was built to function on an emulator and not on a G1. What else would you expect but speedbumps here and there?

These are a few of the things I learned after spending 30 minutes reading news articles and blogs online. 30 minutes made me an informed consumer and I bought the G1 knowing I was beta testing it. It looks like you put 0 minutes into research of your own, and 30 minutes into bitching on a forum filled with enthusiasts. You must be 1 of the 2 people who didn't know they were beta testing this product (according to your poll).

I had to return mine today while I still qualified for buyer’s remorse. And oh yes, there is remorse.

I did the research, and I can even forgive spotty battery life (I take the charger with me wherever I go) a stuttering os, having to wait for the home screen to catch up after u push the button, but good lord man, how on earth could you not provide enough room to store those delicious apps?

It makes me such a sad panda, but the phone goes back today

Wow, I can't believe how many people have come into this thread and started bashing on you original poster. I'm going to start off by saying this,

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, 100%, CORRECT. (original topic poster)

By saying people are a beta tester though, might get on their nerves. I understand that you are being semi-sarcastic and that just comes from the frustration that your phone doesn't work. Instead of all these people coming into this thread and calling you dumb and what not, where are all the other people creating threads about how their phone doesn't work? You know the 100 threads about how AIM, YIM, etc. doesn't work?

I personally do not have the phone yet, but my brother does. Every day I hear him bitch about the phone and how it's a piece of ****. How the phone is garbage and nothing works. Hm, that sounds familiar; oh that's right I hear the same complaints right here on AC forums!

So to make a long post even longer, (but shorter than I'd like it to be) anyone that disagrees with me or the original topic creator is more than welcome to. Just do it in a thoughtful, productive way.

I understand the OS is new and it needs time to iron out and that is what I tell my brother everyday, I tell him "I don't want to hear it, if you don't like the phone give it to me or return it." BUT C'MON, things that should work out of the box and should not be allowed to hide behind the excuse of "the new OS".

Delayed text messages are 100% unacceptable, we live by text messages now..all of us. I had to call T-mobile two times for my brother yesterday because the network wasn't working correctly. If you say you don't text then you are a minority IMO. Either way, the middle schoolers in school now and whoever is behind them will be fully integrated in technology etc.

Not being able to save MMS picture messages, lame.

AIM NOT FUNCTIONING AND RUNNING OFF SMS IS A HUGE DEAL BREAKER FOR FORMER SIDEKICK USERS.

The other things the original poster stated were more business oriented and not available on all phones so I will cut the phone some slack on that end...oh and P.S. the quote from JetsG1..

The Sidekick LX was/is the most UNDERRATED phone. It did everything I wanted it to, when I wanted it to, and how I wanted it to. For people to bash on a Sidekick LX is like someone judging a person after talking to them for two minutes. If you were a user of the phone, you'd know it was very solid, and it would be hard to find complaints about it. No custom MADE ringtones is the only one I ever ran into...

LOL, yes. I'm seeing a lot of people on this forum complaining cause they bit off more than they could chew. Any technical person knows the growing pains of a new system. They also appreciate being there from the ground up on something new that always moves towards getting better.

If you're one of those that want things to just work, don't want to tinker and don't have patience...go get yourself a nice Blackberry.

BUT C'MON, things that should work out of the box and should not be allowed to hide behind the excuse of "the new OS".

Geez that was a long one, now go buy a new Sidekick.

Um, reality check, we are beta testers. 1st gen hardware, 1st gen OS, 1st gen 3G service. If you didn't know this, and I'm sure you did, then you must be pretty dense to think this thing was going to be perfect in your hands. I'm sorry but having a smartphone won't make you smarter. Try a Sidekick, they're cake.

Lol, return the phone then?

Well i can understand some of your Gripes with the phone. but it wasnt like u didnt Know that this was a Completely new OS, new phone etc. you knew there would be problems and Omissions within the software and hardware. that is the way it goes !

We arent Beta testers either, its called early adoption. and u had a choice whether you wanted to go with a Completely Brand new OS etc. or if u wanted a usual phone with all of the Crappy usual features.

With you living in the USA and stuff. it was obvious that the Mobile networks where going to be all that amazing, Its a massive country ! For me living in the UK though, which has a Great T-Mob 3G network. this phone really is pretty amazing ! even if it is just "version 1.0"

In all Honesty..If you dont like it that much, you should take it back and get something different !

Ugh.

/vent

Um, my phone worked perfectly until I ran into some trackball issues which I won't complain about(partly my fault), that's what buyers remorse period is for or warranty exchange.

Do what I did....use the phone for 7 days and then return it.

If you are either rich, easily brain washed by adverts, like to live in hope or hippies who think open source will take over the (mobile) world, then this version of the phone is good for you. Otherwise this version of the phone is not for you.

I bought it because I can deal with problems and have fun trying to figure them out.

You mean, you like sitting on your thumb for weeks on end, waiting for google to figure them out, right?

ROFLMAO @ chuuu.
You think complaining will help!
If you want things to be improved, then start learning how to program sunshine.

Haha, that's exactly what we all want to do now that we've all paid up to $400 for a phone. You sound like my 13-year-old cousin. He's not very smart. Neither are you. I'm not even going to waste my time pointing out why your argument is flawed by nature. If you can't figure out why this statement (which I've heard from more people than just you) is asinine then please, please, please, leave forever.

I love you too Juice, but sadly i don't see myself remaining an active member of this forum any longer. I think i'm going to register at anddev.org hopefully i can actually learn something new there.

You're dumb.

With posts like that, I don't mind never seeing you again. If that starts right now, that means this forum improves by 10 points, however much your bottom dwelling, autistic, know-nothing self takes away from this whole foruming experience by just being here.

You must be 1 of the 2 people who didn't know they were beta testing this product (according to your poll).

Beta testing generally doesn't come with a fee. A $400 fee and/or a two year contract at that. Notice how the poll has evened out? Go home, kid. You're out of your league with this one.

UGH! Juice PLEEZE!!!!! Neva call Stone baby anything or Sweetie or pumpkin! UGH!

And to everyone else. Damn, I guess I don't really ask for much. I'm enjoying my phone. Sure it lacks certain things. But They'll come in time. If not..I'm still going to enjoy my phone. Its does enuff of what I want..even now.

:D
Stone

Why are you here? I really wonder about posters like you, who really contribute nothing more than... well, nothing! I mean this guy can't even figure out that he has a signature space and still signs the end of his post with his username. What are you, Republican?

This phone is flawed by nature. Google SHOULD have allowed their engineers and software developers use this phone to properly work out all of the software and hardware kinks to the best of their ability. They didn't. Now the consumer has to suffer. It's either return the phone and forget about Android forever or suffer through a phone who's core functions are flawed and now we're out $400 plus our soul for the next two years. Hmm, I love my options there. The G1 was NOT advertised as BETA, nor are we getting a grace period of free use. We're paying for our phone, paying for our data plans and Google use testing out their software. Personally, I don't mind this. I understand that everything isn't 100% out of the box, blah blah blah, but responding to a poster with a legitimate post detailing his concerns with this phone the way you guys have is pathetic.

Maybe we do need a separate forum that we can just drop this threads into if only to keep quiet all the 13-year-old kids who are whining about the person complaining. They are almost just as bad, if not worse (I think worse), than the person complaining about the phone in the first place.

@OP: Your complaints are reasonable, but your perspective is a bit off. The iPhone you're comparing the G1 to is in its 2nd or 3rd iteration. You complain that the G1 can't extract the picture from a MMS? Remember, the first gen iPhones weren't even equipped with MMS!
