As I've heard others comment about the iPhone (both original and 3G), the G1 is a neat device, but isn't necessarily a fantastic phone....yet.

There are some basic features that would make it so much nicer, yet these seem to be conspicuously missing.

First, let me say that call quality is excellent. No complaints. Reception is also excellent. Even the Voice Command is excellent. I've been very pleased with it so far.

However, two things are missing that even my 6 year old Motorola V330 flip-phone had. Perhaps the G1 has these features and I'm just missing how to accomplish it.

1. Ability to input digits to be sent after connecting a call. For example, when I dialed my voicemail for work, I have to input my extension, then my password. On my old phone, this was all done for me, without me having to do it every time. Was great for hands-free use just to quickly check messages. Can this be done on the G1?

2. When on a call and you get another call coming in, two buttons should pop up giving the option to "Ignore" or "Answer". It isn't terribly intuitive how to do this on the G1, and I've accidentally hung up on a few people trying to figure it out.....not to mention telling one of my co-workers that "I love you" because I thought I was still talking to my wife!

As far as entering number for voicemail login, your app tab at the bottom displays a #5 when on a voice call. Press it or drag it and there's your number pad for numerical entries.

As for the call waiting make sure it is active in your call settings menu (Settings>Call Settings>Additional call settings). When a call comes in while on the line, a dialog comes on screen giving you the choice to put current call on hold and answer other call or hang up current call and answer.

If you put the current call on hold and answer, you can then press the menu button for more options like merge the calls together. Viola, party time.

Obviously I'm using the dial tab to access my work voicemail now...but I shouldn't have to enter that in every single time! There should be a way for me to input additional digits for pins, etc. for calls to automated services without having to manually do it every time.

And I do have call waiting enabled.....a smaller box pops up showing me the current call and the usual large box pops up telling me who the new caller is....but nothing else comes up (automatically) to give me any options. I have not tried pressing the menu button.

Good news! To automagically dial extra digits enter a comma after the number followed by the digits you need entered. The comma acts as a pause, so you can enter more to adjust the timing if needed.

Yep...and that's how many of the old phones were programmed for the same function.

Awesome! Thank you! I think that is actually how my old phone did it too, but it sort of guided the user through the process to tell them which characters to input for that effect.

Excellent!

The first is really not a basic phone function. And the second can be done by hitting the talk button when on a call.

Gah! Doesn't work. When it dials it says USSD code running, then says connection problem or invalid MMI code.

Grr.....
