There are many rumors flying around that Sprint is getting an Android handset that will have more features as well as be much more powerful than the G1 (Dream). Giving the HTC a run for its money is an understatement given the rumored power of this device. Be sure to watch out as many key telecom providers as well as Phone manufacturers are supporting Google in the leap into the opensource OS world. If rumors are true, appears as expected, Google is going to be pumping devices out all over the place very quickly.

Wow, this is great news for Google and Android. :).
Although, for Sprint, I think there is not much point in trying to rush a new phone by the end of this year. December or even November end might be too late for the holiday season and by then, T-Mobile would've cashed in on most of the holiday shopping fanfare. A better option might be to take their own sweet time and release it next year after bringing it to perfection.

Ha, speak for yourself!!!
I'll buy the Sprint version on December 29th if that's the day they release it!! :D
Android has been in the process of being "brought to perfection" forever it seems like. They need to release it already. Think of it this way, if you saw the London demo (which I'm sure all of us Android nuts did) the OS looked AMAZING. Much better than the old keynote video. What does Sprint really have to do? The OS is there as evidenced on the TMobile G1. The Hardware is there, inevitably on an HTC device (hopefully the Touch HD.) They just have to inject all of their useless Sprint crap that we'll all remove as soon as we get our hands on it anyway, right?;)

Soon the market will be swarming with android devices.... Google's work on android is finished.. all they have to do now is to tweak it & test it, tweak it & test it... on different devices.... the ball is in manufacturer & carrier's court! although i don't expect any new androids this year. may be early next year...

Sprint is known to have not very good phones offered... therefore I do not care what Verizon, Alltell and Sprint have :) - but will cheer for them if they get into Android too :) hehehe

I can see sprint trying to put Android on a cheap "rugged" phone.

Actually, some of them aren't too bad...I've had an HTC Titan (aka Sprint Mogul, Verizon XV6800, Telus P4000) for a while, and it's a pretty nice phone.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, sprint pretty much looks to HTC for its PDAs nowadays. I think that's a good thing, with the upcoming touch line that Sprint recently announced. Now if we can just get the Touch HD in an android version, then it would truly be an ipone killer I think.
I guess we'll see what happens.

Sprint will hopefully get their 4G(WiMax) crap together and put out an Android device that'll blow 'em all away. Then I'll see if I wanna head back over to them.

"The earlier Journal article cited one delay coming from Sprint’s planned phone. We’re now hearing from multiple sources that the Sprint Android phone will have “other functionality” than the Dream, and will definitely be out by 2009."

There coverage here is good. But plans are too steep for me, even before they nickel and dime me to death.

Eh - I am natively from Europe and cannot stand the mobile operators who do not have GSM network :) therefore I want service where I will use the phone that will work EVERYWHERE in the world :)
Sprint wise and their service: all i hear from a lots of people is bad things. Monthly bills for 400-500 minutes end up being paid $100-150-200 - somehow it seems it is too easy to get into charging rates. Plans are way to expensive; quality of the network is terrible. I use Nextel at work - the biggest failure and the smallest screen EVER! I guess joining Sprint and Nextel was failure in the whole means of that word.

I hope they do and they don't. It will be great if they come out with another Android phone, but if its better than the G1 then Ill have to buy it and its going to set me back right at Christmas time.
Everyone's got their own priorities.

wellllll
if they release info about it before the 22nd then i might consider that, b/c i will have to pay an early termination fee to leave srpint and then pick up the g1 and start a new contract with t-mobile
so if its that much better then i guess ill just have to see

I'm not too sure. The rumor says Samsung was going to develop and manufacture the phone for Sprint...not HTC. Samsung and LG both announced that the earliest you'll see an Android phone from them was 2nd half of 2009.
...and they sorta stressed "earliest."

I am a Sprint customer, and I'm pleased with my service. So this news has excited me very much, I just wish the phones would hit much sooner. I don't know how much longer I can stand my Treo 700wx.

I'm on Sprint too and I'll give them more time If I don't get a concrete announcement about android on Sprint before Nov, 10 I will transfer my number to T-Mobile, I believe we are many android nuts thinking the same, Why not? lets make a list of all of us, let me create a post

I'm guessing they won't be announcing it in the month of October, If they are going to get one out by Dec 31st then I can't imagine them announcing it after Nov 31st at the latest. I think it would be wise for Sprint to announce it's plans before the 30 day return deadline for T-Mobile switchers and more wise to do it within the next couple of days so they can keep masses of people from jumping ship.
All that said, I can see Sprint waiting it out wanting to see what the general public's response is and how well it's received and what problems T-Mobile/Google have in launching their device before they lay out their plans.
I'm hoping I can get my hands on one, on the Sprint EVDO-Rev A network by the time Santa comes down the Chimney. I've had Sprint for 8 years now and have been pleased overall with the network, customer service has definitely improved in the last year and they have made a ton of changes to their online self servicing so i can swap ESN's when i get new phones (NO SIM CARD REQUIRED) and I don't have to call them. It's hard to beat the old SERO plan
Key Phrase: "We’re now hearing from multiple sources that the Sprint Android phone will have “other functionality” than the Dream, and will definitely be out by 2009."

Weird, because it's just been reported in several tech blogs that Sprint's Customer Service has jumped to #1 compared to others. I have to admit though, from personal experience, while the lower hierarchy of the Sprint CSRs are international robots, they can easily refer you to someone higher in rankings if necessary. They respond in a very timely manner as well through e-mail.
Anyway, I hope they announce one soon because it's the holidays and I should be not broke for once, and I need to buy a new phone asap. Touch Pro is my current choice for Sprint, the alternative being the X1 assuming it doesn't go to AT&T. If Sprint launches an Android phone I'll most definitely snatch it up. Then again if I can break my 2 year contract without paying the ETFs I'd get a G1 as well. But I'm really excited to see a new Android phone.
Hell, I don't care if it's the same hardware. JUST DO IT SPRINT! By the end of this year!!
Any updates on this by the way? I asked several Sprint CSRs and their response was that they'll alert everyone asap when they get the news. Or at least that's what they told me - I'm paraphrasing btw.

I have a plan with 2 lines (2 Palm Centros), Unlimited everything with 1500 minutes. I pay $100 a month.
That's a pretty good deal to me.

I think it will be next year before we see Android on Sprint. It's an issue of development lead times to get Android operating on CDMA hardware. Qualcomm is a member of the OHA, so perhaps that will give a big boost to this effort. Can't wait to see the next android phone, no matter who gets it.
