Can you still use the phone for calls and text messaging with your active t-mobile sim card? I'm currently on a t-mobile family plan with unlimited text and i am planning on getting the g1. I am not going to purchase a data plan however because i have wifi access pretty much everywhere i go. I just want to make sure that voice plans and text still works when you activate your phone without a data plan. Thanks and dont tell me to get a data plan. :)

On T-Mobile.com, It says the data plan is required. May be wrong... Just call T-Mobile and ask.

As a T-mo Rep...I tell you from experience...since you have unlimited text, all you have to do is add the data plan only, its 24.99...you HAVE to get it because it will not work without a 3G connection. Wi-Fi is capable, yes...but the reps will not be able to sell it without adding a data plan. At least thats how it is in NYC.

If the phone won't work without a 3G connection my phone must be magic because I only get edge and people using their G1s on other networks must have magic phones too since they all report it working just fine, including edge data.

Ok, I am speaking from first hand experience, the phone will work perfectly fine without a data plan. I purchased mine from ebay and did not have a data plan connected to my line and I was able to activate the phone perfectly and all non-data features worked perfectly on the phone.

The question is why would you even want a phone like this without a data plan? Its a waste of a phone imo.

You should worry more about your own phone than the motives of other people who bought the phone in my opinion.

If you would've read my post you would know its not a waste for me. i am in fact saving money by purchasing one with no contract. i get free wifi access all over my campus and most places i go, so it makes no sense for me to pay 25 bucks a month for something i get for free. I'm aware i wont be able to do EVERYTHING, but its still a kickass phone and i just wanted to make sure i could use the features i want to use. Thanks everyone.

Does anyone know whether this phone can function as a basic GPS device without a data plan? (Location, heading, etc.?) My travels take me out of range of the T-mobile network. Do GPS functions work out there in the boondocks or would I still need a stand-alone GPS for hiking, location, etc.?

seeing as how google maps streams maps over the internet, it would render your GPS useless... now granted the GPS will work without a data plan because it is determining your location via satellites, but you'll have to wait for a software package that includes maps

I also bought a phone at ebay and do not have a data plan. Do you mind how you activated your phone? I got ..."your phone is communicating ...Google server.... There is a problem communicating with the Google server."

ThansI'm not convinced you can set up this phone without SOME sort of data plan. $5.99/mo. T-Zones seems to work. Others have reported success without any data, but I've personally seen the issue you've mentioned. Perhaps those people were on a temporary plan or something. Maybe you can borrow a SIM card from someone on T-Mobile with a data plan long enough to get it set up? Maybe there is an easier way, but I don't know it.

Here is my current thinking on what does and does not work when you have no G1 data plan:

Thanks, RegGuheert

My problem is I'm in Canada. So, T-mobile service is not an option for me. I need to try to find a SIM card with data plan from a Canadian service provider...frustrating...

I just got my G1 on Tuesday. I'm on a family plan, and we just added the unlimited messaging. I put the SIM card from my old phone into the G1, booted it up, logged into my Google account and it worked fine. Since I didn't add the data plan immediately I couldn't use maps, or the browser, or any apps that used internet. However, I was staying synced with the Google apps - Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts. I added the 24.99 data plan and very soon after my phone reached its full potential. :D

Streaming Imeem stations while driving is just plain awesome. It does it surprisingly smoothly, and my city doesn't even have 3G yet. That's one thing you can't get without the data plan. Not to mention if you need to pull up Maps while driving on the outskirts of town where there are no wifi points. $25 bucks a month extra is definitely a lot though...
