It started this morning. I can't access the web from G1. Earlier I could only visit a few websites and now all websites are not available.
Anyone else experiencing this? I am in Orlando, FL where 3G is in full swing already.
Also, I was having problems getting to the market. I turned off phone a few times, and that fixed problem.
Anyone?

All right, decided to call T-mobile, enough was enough....
Told the representative that I was having problem with the network since this morning. Only way I could get a connection was if I turned off the phone, and then it was only good for about a minute after that. It would load the first page, and after that nothing.
She checked to see if there were tower problems in Orlando or around my zip code and nothing.
Then she said this:
"I will give you 20 sec's to remove battery and sim card so I can to turn off your tower after you remove your battery and sim card, if you're still having problems, give us a call from a different phone, and we'll troubleshoot the G1".
I told her to give me two minutes, didn't want to be rushed. She agreed. Took everything out, waited about 5 mins, and put the sim card and battery back.
And viola!.
I don't know what she did, I don't know what "turning off tower" means, perhaps I misunderstood her, but this connection now is FASTER THAN EVER.
The pages are loading way faster.
NY TIMES web page loaded in about 7 sec's. Before it could take more than 15 sec's.
Have you people tried that? T-Mobile doing a "reset" on your phone? (I think that's what she did)

Maybe you maxed out your 1GB cap earlier and she let it go for now...lol - Just kidding. Out of curiousity, I will call again and ask what was done and if it was documented, that way if it happens again in future, someone else doesnt have to do guess work...

turning off tower - this basically means she is deleting your current registered location on the network as to refresh you on the network... typically a battery refresh will do the same, but you should actually keep you battery out for much longer than 20 seconds

Update:
I decided to call from a different phone (my girlfriend's 1978 Verizon Wireless out of date phone....lol) and I went off with them.
I said this is completely unacceptable and what the heck is going on?
Operator told me the same thing, and added a few new things to the "problem"
She said that I was "shut off" for today because the free session of unlimited data/text message ended today (since I received my G1 last Tuesday and had 7-day free unlimited data/text for free) and my new unlimited data/text message will start tomorrow that I will be billed.
What she did was she changed date to today so I can start receiving data instead of tomorrow.
She said I won't be having this problem anymore. There are two towers near my apartment and all connections are 100% good, so she said.
I'll keep you updated if this continues to happen.

I've been having the same problem in Orlando as well, so has everyone else with the G1 I've asked in Orlando. I think it's a network issue or something. When it falls back to EDGE it works fine. It's specifically the 3g data going off and on.

aint that bout a B... i had the same problem late sunday night early monday.. lost all signal on my g1, but my wing had full signal.. couldnt connect to the web for nothing, called tmo did about 10 master resets, they changed my data plan to the g1 plan since it was showing that i had the total internet and g1 plan. it still didnt fix the problem.. they didnt try and remove me from the tower though.. woke up this morning with 4 bars in my house but the signal would drop back down to 2 bars... left the house and had to run an errand and didnt have a signal hardly, i live in a area where the signal is super.. always 4 bars but the g1 couldnt get any bars hardly..
So i sent it back as a defect and they are sending me another one in the mail... im in VA with no 3g just edge, but im on my wing right now and have 4 full bars.

I've been having these issues on and off all day as well. I've pulled the battery and SIM for a few, turned it back on, same thing, switched over to 2G only with no connection issues, then back, and it seemed to work fine after that, but then the issue switched inability to send SMS until restarting the phone. Definitely seems to be an area issue, not a phone issue.

I just got off the phone with CS and told them I didn't have data service but I had read that it may be that the initial free 7-day trial for data was over and I might not have a data service on my phone. She assured me that was the issue and turned it on. She said it would take 2-48 hrs before it returned (eyes roll). So we'll see if that was the issue.
My only real Bit#h is when I pre-ordered the phone I had already chosen my data plan then and it said that it would change over automatically.

Well, the operator yesterday didn't say it would take 24-48 hours, it actually worked right there while I was on the phone with her (I called with another phone).
Went to bed, woke up, came to work, started to surf web, NO CONNECTION.
So, I don't know what the heck is going on.
And I actually told her that
"How can I trust this connection since it's working now, and later I will wake up and there could be no connection, like it happened earlier during day"
AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.
How can something work with them as soon as they do this "tower reset or whatever", but then a few hours after all connection is gone?
Can someone explain this to me?

It's not your phone. I have a "signal" as well. G1 recognizes 3G and all bars are full, but when I access the web, it takes a long time, then gives up, and gives you a "Cannot access web" message

If you read some other posts you will see something about them dropping your data plan after the 7 day free trial. I just went online and sure enough, I did not have a data plan on my account. I chose the G1 plan I wanted and got the confirmation. In about 20 minutes, I was good to go.

I woke up this morning with a text message from t-mobile that said :
Free T-Mobile msg: Enjoy your new G1!! For tips and info, visit the G1 forum and support page: www.t-mobile.com/g1support. Tap this msg to go there now
My service is working fine.
I had called the other day to make sure my service was going to change when the 7 day free internet trial was ending. CS said that it didn't show that my plan was going to change so she made the changes on her computer and made sure it would.
I'm guessing everyone needs to call now and change their service plan.
And yes i pre-ordered the phone through the internet.

All right.
I am still at work, and I had a chance to play with G1.
EDGE Network is working fine. Pages load and is working. When it switches to 3G, that's when there's a problem and pages won't load.
First chance I get I'll call T-Mobile (again) to see if there's any known issues with 3G coverage here. At least I can surf net.
I turned on "USE 2G NETWORK" in the meantime.

Ok so here is the deal... I just got off the phone with Customer Care, and because the phones release date was Oct. 22, and some even got it earlier and they knew a lot of people would be migrating from different mobile devices T-Mobile generously offered The Data Unlimited Plan for "FREE". So you all have been using the G1 services for free. The promotional time period was from Oct. 16th to midnight on 29th which was last night. This grace period was to let you use the phone and become familiar and also give you time to switch over your plans to the G1 plan. So everyone please contact T-Mobile and be sure you are on the G1 data plan and not the data plan from your previous mobile device! Hope this helps for other people as well.

Hi I'm in Orlando, FL (Sanford/Lake Mary Area). I'm too experiencing 3G network problems (switching back to edge and not being able to browsing the internet, marketplace, any app that using a data connection). I got my G1 this past Sunday also.
For the time being I switch to 2G Network and things are back to normal (except for the speed of course). Looks like the best solution is just to call Customer Service.
NOTE: I'm not surprised by this though... I pretty much expected this to happen considering they just rolled out the 3G networks and its not as big as AT&Ts, so I say just be patient with it and let them work out the bugs... A lot of people have this attitude with Android and the G1, so lets transfer it over to the T-Mobile's 3G network ;-)

I just got back from the T-mobile store at the Sanford Town Center Mall (Orlando area). The employee there confirmed there's a known issue with 3G service in the greater Orlando area and T-mobile is working to fix it. In the meantime, you can disable 3G by going to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks and selecting "Use only 2G networks."
The employee I spoke with did not have an ETA for when T-mobile would have 3G working in greater Orlando reliably.
I had them replace my 7-year-old SIM card just in case and it's had no effect.

I'm in Kansas City, no 3G here yet, so only Edge. I have had FREQUENT problems with not being able to access the network via my browser or the app market. (No problem with email).
It mostly happens right after I use wi-fi at home or at some restaurants, then return to the edge network when I am out of range from the wi-fi. That's when the problem mostly occurs, plus sometimes just for no reason.
Called CS the other night, they "reset the towers" or whatever and got me working. When it happened again today, CS tried that again. Then forced me to do a master reset. (what a pain, but thank God contacts and Calendar are in the cloud, right?!) When that didn't work, she wanted me to send her my phone. I told her no frickin' way! I told her I didn't think it was a problem with the phone but she insisted. As I was about to give in, I took the battery off and turned it back on and everything started working. What really ticks me off is that she kept saying this wasn't a known issue, but clearly based on this thread, I am not the only one with the problem.
Removing the battery always seems to get me back online. But what a pain! I gotta believe this is a software update. I haven't received any updates, but my wife's phone has and she hasn't had these kinds of problems.
Anyone else? Any suggestions?
PS: Had the Locale app installed to start wi-fi automatically when in the vicinity of my home, but even after master reset still having problems, so i don't believe it's that app - just the switch back and forth from w-fi to edge.

ya, im getting the same exact problem, except im in Houston.
Ive called 3 times, and all three times they transferred me to the "Smart phone device department". and all three times, i got disconnected on my home phone...
anyways, EDGE works fine for now... but is slow. i usually go select EDGE, then use it for a bit, then uncheck it, and 3g works. I am going to give them until the end of next week to fix this problem before i get mad at them. I have already been yelled at by a Tmobile customer care personnel, and i got the name of the customer service person's name.
anyways, just use EDGE for now. Just my 2 cents.

I'm having the same problem. I'm in Houston and 3G & EDGE were working fine until about two days ago. I uninstalled a few apps and it started working again. I think that any apps that toggle the 3G, or EDGE connections cause the problem, but I'm not 100% sure. NY Times (Mobile site) is loading in about 7 seconds for me, same as someone who posted earlier. I don't think it's a problem initially with Android or the G1 device. It's probably an app or T-Mobile, you have to remember that it's their first time having a 3G network and their servers might still be a bit problematic. That's all I have, I will post with later updates.

there seems to be 2 possibly 3 scenarios happening here
#1 Most common, It appears there is a bug with our phones software (hopefully not the hardware  ) and if your phone goes into sleep mode for an extended period of time, when you wake it up and unlock it your data does not work, but the phone and gmail do work, to fix this it DOES NOT REQUIRE A REBOOT! simply switch the phone to airplane mode OR switch 3G off and back on (wait for edge to takeover b4 switching back) this will force your phone to reconnect the data connection to the cell tower and it should be working again
this scenario is what is happening to my phone I have had my phone sense 10/24 and the first 5 days i never had this problem last Thursday it started happening. I think it may be that the data network is getting overloaded by new data users going crazy using their phones and i say this because i have definitely seen some big decreases in the speed on 3G in the past few days. This might be a semi-intentional thing the towers are doing to try and cope with the demand for data on them by disconnecting the connection on phones that have not requested data in a certain time frame prob. around 20-30 min
It is worth noting that i went out shopping today for 3-4 hours went all over the place and wither i was driving or in a store i had imeem streaming music on my phone and never lost connection once so this backs up what i'm thinking is happening here
#2 if your a preorder customer or had a tmo account before you got your G1 take a min to check your services on the tmo site to make sure you have one of the 2 G1 data plans on your account as some people have had theirs dropped from their account and lost service due to that,no amount of rebooting or reseting data connection will fix this you need to call CC and get it fixed
#3 Using an old SIM card from another phone, this one is less common and somewhat sketchy on if it works or not but some people have had issues related to this as well as other issues on their phone and it appears was caused by using a SIM from a differient phone and not the one the G1 came with, if this is your case you should get it switched out

I'm in KC also and haven't had data access since last Wednesday (10/29) evening. I looked at my account on the T-Mobile website and it did show my G1 data plan. I stopped at a T-Mobile store on Saturday afternoon and he verified that I did have a data plan. He gave me a new sim card and still no luck. He removed the data plan and then added it back to my account. I received a text message within a minute confirming a change to my account. He said it could take up to 24 hours for it to apply to my account, but he wouldn't be surprised if it was working by Saturday night. It's still not working as of 10:15am on Monday. I've taken my battery and sim card out for 10 minutes and it still isn't working. The 3G network in KC won't be up and running for another month or two, so this is all on EDGE. I've also tried some of the other suggestions that were listed in this thread, but with no luck. I did have the RC29 update notice waiting for me when I woke up Saturday and I installed it successfully. I was hoping that update might fix the problem, but it didn't. I guess I will have to call Tmo or go back to the store and see if they can do anything else. It annoys me that I am paying for a data plan that I can't even use!
