After reading about the G1's well known creaking problems and reading some of the DIY fixes people have come up with, my phone still produced some creaking noise. after carefully analyzing the phone, not only is the screen feels flimsy and producing that god awful creaking noise, the battery cover is also the culprit in those annoying creaking noise. so what i did to remedy this problem was cut some small semi thick 3m tape that feels like it has some cushions on it and stickied some on the back of the battery cover. after having done this, my phone now feels alot more solid and all creaking noise is gone. no noticeable gap can be seen after installing the cover back.

Props, at least he`s fixing it himself and not whining :P
But yep, I would rather call it in and ask for an exchange.

Why exchange. The way the back cover is made it will break and creak the more you take it off. Heck mine did it after 3 days and I only took the back cover off twice... :(

yea this is true. ur battery cover is goin to wear. no point in exchanging it. had to do this with my Dash. i used black electrical tape and makes the cover feel a lot more stable.

The back didn't break. You broke it. There is a big difference. I have taken mine off many times and I didn't break it, so it's not flimsy enough to break on it's own.

I agree it's lightweight plastic and I don't like it.

Same with the "creaky" screen. I can almost bet most of those with creaky screens tried to improperly open their screen the first time without reading the instructions.

If you tries to flip it up, it will seperate and damage.

If you tried to push it from the wrong side it could damage.

I think there is a lot of operator error in these forums.

"Admittedly a lot of genuine complaints as well)

regular tape wont work, you need the thicker cushion type of tape. in my case, i used 3m double sided tape and just left one side unpeeled. this is the"foam" type of tape. remember, the tape cant be too thick or too thin. although its been a week since i did this mod, it still holds up great and still no creaking noise. but i called CS today to get a replacement phone because i just cant stand the screen creaking.

i bought the thick one that you mentioned.
even if i don't have the battery cover on, it still makes the creaking noise...
any idea?

if you still hear creaking noise even after you take your cover off than you need to further isolate and locate the problem. could it be your screen that's causing the noise? if it is than i suggest you call CS and get a replacement phone!

Its not really good as you will create heat spots on the battery and will damage the phone/battery mmuch faster in the long run if you use yoru gps or internet quite often.

if you look at my attached picture, none of the tape is near the battery. 1 or 2 small pieces of tape wont affect the battery or heat up the phone. the tape is simply there to provide additional support to keep the flimsy battery cover from causing too much play between the phone and battery cover.

Was your battery cover creaking along the edges where it connected to the phone? That's where I seem to find most of my noise by the camer button and top left corner of phone.

yeah the slight bent portion of the phone is where my noise was coming from.
that's where i put the tape so that it dampens the noise.

I'm having the exact same problem. I took the back off once to pull the battery out, and now it squeaks on the edge near the camera button. Let us know how well the tape works!

Had mine for just under a month and I'm also hearing this noise. But it sounds to me like the noise originates from the left edge of the sliding screen rather than the back cover. Any one been able to do anything in this area?

I have had my phone since the middle of February, and never noticed the noise until reading this...
