Are my contacts supposed to be synced?

Got my G1 today and was pretty stoked about it. My issue comes with the fact that none of my google contacts are syncing with the phone. I assumed that they would sync immediately. Am I doing something wrong? I have over 100 contacts I need synced and so far I have no idea how to go about doing it. Is there something I have to do to get them to show up on my phone? Thanks.

u got to import them. I think u goto contracts then press menu and u should get options for importing them I think.

I loggged into my google account when i turned on the phone. Everything synched automatically

check your settings.....

menu-settings-data synchronization

make sure they are all checked.

Are yo in a 3g covered area?

That's probably my issue is that my coverage goes from Edge to 3G back to Edge back to 3G. I'm in the suburbs of Houston so I'm not getting a consistent 3G signal. I couldn't log in to the internet either or Amazon or even to the Android market.
