I was wondering if anyone dismantle the G1 yet? Like how some webpages took apart the iPhone to look at the insides.

Gadget freaks all over - for some reason, unknown to me - are always eager to be the first to disassemble the latest and greatest tech toys... It happens every time Apple puts something new out...

If you want to hack the headset so that you can use quality earbuds you can find some good info on Makezine.
Here's the link:
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/10/upgraded_g1_headset_use_w.html
This guy basically split open the mic portion of the headset and soldered in a new set of buds.
The reason I replied to this thread is because he includes pics of the inside of the headset so that you can do it too.

I'd like to know how to take it apart, or at least get to the hinge mechanism, so i can tighten it up and fix the screen loosey goosey. :(

I'd like to know too. I currently have one G1 with a screwy keyboard and another with a dead pixel. If I could combine the two, I'd have a perfect G1 (which hasn't happened in 3 returns).

Whoa, perfect. Thank you!
I'll tackle this tonight, and if there is some way to tighten up the hinge mechanism or shim it somehow, I'll definitely report back. :)
(hope I don't break my phone, haha)

Well, I got it all apart down to the hinge mechanism!
I found the cause of the loose screen. I'll take a pic of it later tonight. The L shaped metal bracket, that attaches the hinge action to the body, has parts of the swiveling arms (the grey shaped arms you see between the screen/chin bump when you open/close the screen), are bolted to that metal bracket with rivets.
One of the rivets has about 1mm of play in it. The grey swiveling arm moves up and down on that rivet freely, and allows the screen to twist up and down with a lot more give. I pinched down the grey swivel arm to the bracket to "simulate" a fully tightened rivet, and the play went away - not completely, but significantly.
Anyone know how to tighten these rivets? There are several across the swivel arms, and most seem snug and flush - except for one. :(
If the rivets can't be tightened (which may be the case), some sort of washer/C-clip to clip into the rivet to remove the play from the assembly might work..

Good news! (and bad) I fixed it!
The loose screen was fixed by hammering the rivet in. I took some pics - will pull it off my camera later tonight.
The screen is tight, snaps open, and stays firm and doesn't wobble if I shake it while open. Doesn't open as much when closed, either. It's great!
The bad news.. the reassembly is a bit tricky, and I seem to have broken the sd card reader in the process - it won't detect/see the new card! Oh, and it still creaks. But not nearly as much.
I'll start a new thread once I have the pics. I think a lot of people would be interested in this fix.

Hm... there's a little switch that enables the SD when the door is closed. Have you installed that properly?

Thanks for the tip inportb. Yeah, I see the little switch - but even if I press it down with the door, or a screwdriver, it still fails to see the card. dmesg shows that the sd controller is detected, but shows as eject state = 1. Hmm.....
