I am confused about when and why you would want to use 3G over WIFI and vice versa. Can anybody educate me. With the exception of downloading music is there a speed difference?

I am not an expert, but I have noticed that my wifi only kicks on when I'm browsing at home or in another wifi. This is the fasted browsing/downloading you can do. While g3 is good it cannot compete with those speeds. Once out of a wifi area the g3 is your fastest (but not your only) choice. If u disable g3 then edge will be your data supplier, which is not as fast as g3 nor wifi.
If I'm worng pls let me know, but I think that's it

In general I believe WIFI should be faster but does not go over large distances. 3G speeds are a bit slower but they are in a much larger area without having to go through the trouble of logging in....as far as the speed difference on the phone? I have no clue because I don't have mine yet ;)

Just a couple of things to thing about..
First of all wifi is suppose to be faster but it all depends on what connection the access point has to the internet. Although there are allot of wifi access points out there not all of them are free and even if they are unsecured you can never be to sure connecting to those as it is risky. You will get lower latency from wifi.
If 3g is available in your area then you have the advantage of always having high speed coverage and you can leave 3g on the whole time and not worry about supplying wifi credentials every time you connect to a new network. 3g is also capped at 10GBs per month allowance from tmobile so that is a negative. Also very high latency with 3g.

Also note: WiFi is often free. 3G is not free... (One of the big draws of this phone is the ability to use it WITHOUT a data plan. We'll see if T-Mobile figures out how to prevent this in a way that cannot be worked around.)

true limits on an "unlimited" data plan kinda sucks, but 10 gigs is a lot for general smart phone use. at least for me

If you are traveling cell service may not be available (maybe outside the country) but most hotels have wifi nowadays.

Here. Maybe this LINK (http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/August2005/1900.htm) can give you a better understanding of what the difference is. :) Enjoy.

The answers about WiFi and 3G still confuse me.
My Tmobile cell phone normally uses 3G, I think. The signal comes from towers. Most places are within range. Right?
If in a place which is out of range of such towers, one may be able to get on the internet via WiFi, provided there is WiFi available where one is, such as at many coffee shops, or at home if one has a router etc. Right? Though that would not enable my Tmobile cell phone to work if out of range of Tmobile 3G towers. Right?
Please tell me if I am wrong!
