View Full Version : Google Contacts doesn't sync fully with the G1

There's a bug with the sync between the G1's contact list and Google Contacts. The sync has forced me to reset my G1 to factory settings once before, but now, it's something completely different. I manage most of my contact info through the G1. However, I just noticed that some of the changes made are not synced with Contacts. Phone numbers, check. Email addresses, check. Address, nope. Name, nope.

I hope it will be fixed soon.

My addresses sync up just fine.. I've been using the map from current location to contact address feature since day 1... Sorry for your misfortune, hopefully someone else has shared your experience.

Good luck amigo

Actually to clarify, if I put the address in via Contacts, it will sync to my G1. But when I put an address in the G1, the address won't show up in Contacts. Same deal with names.

Strange
I just received a call from one of my clients about 30 minutes ago. Didn't have his info in my contact database, so I long pressed on his phone number, selected "Add to New Contact", and then entered his name, address, company etc.

30 minutes later, while at my computer, I went to www.igoogle.com and there it was.

Haven't had any issues. Not sure why you're isn't working.

Are you actively using the sync data function? Settings > Data sync > gmail and Contacts hardpress and sync

you probably have auto sync off, if not.. then uhhh... umm.. are there any other variables you could possibly provide?

I haven't seen this yet *knock on wood* Please make sure that you sync all your contacts with your google account.

On contacts > Menu > Settings > Sync Groups, and make sure "Sync all contact" is check marked. Also from the home screen choose Menu > Settings > Data synchronization then have the "Auto-sync" option checked. Now you should have all your contacts synced with your google account.

I just checked everything. I do have auto-sync on. Here's the weird thing... after I posted on here, everything synced. It's as if Google saw this posting and fixed my account :p

I was having a similar problem on the 24th when I was at the airport and updating my contacts via my phone.

It was weird, it was not updating my contacts (said there was a sync problem) for JUST certain people (specifically, existing male friends...female friends, new contacts from either gender, and family from both genders were updating normally).

My only solution to fix this was to update the phone numbers again in Gmail. Oddly enough, after fixing the phone numbers in Gmail, it finally synced between both Android and Gmail. Also, it added an email address to my Gmail Contacts that I entered in my phone, but did not have on my Gmail contact list.

Also, what is up with the check mark when you add new people sometimes? Is there a way to remove it? It appeared after I added a new contact for someone, and it won't go away. I can only see it when I click on that person's contact profile and it takes me to a list of phone numbers and SMS options.

When I import my contacts to my g1 a lot or my contacts had numbers beside them. Why was this?

I was having trouble with my contact syncing, so here's what I did and it solved all my problems (read this on another thread):

note: use this technique at your own risk, I am not responsible if you delete all your contacts and don't have a backup.

1) go into my gmail account (at a computer), and click contacts
2) click export on the right side of the page
3) use the "only" option and select "my contacts" (default)
4) use google csv for the format (default)
5) export and save somewhere safe
6) go back to your contact list
7) select all
8) take a big gulp, and click the "delete contacts" button
9) go to your g1, open your contacts and make sure it's empty, delete any stragglers
10) go back to your computer and import the contact list you just exported
11) go back to the g1 and force a contact sync, it may take a few minutes, and go through a few cycles of syncing, but eventually everything should work great after that

I've heard the RC29 update is supposed to fix some issues with contact syncing. Also, regardless of whether or not you have auto-sync enabled for your contacts, the G1 will still auto-sync any changes to your contact list that are made on the G1.

I received the update several days ago, and it did not resolve the problem.

In fact, I just made some changes on my phone again, and it still has not synced correctly (though, I saw that it did a sync earlier this morning).

I'm assuming that, if I chose to reimport my contacts, my ringtones saved for each user will be gone.

I had a problem with my calender as well as my contacts till yesterday. well it started 3 days back. here is what resolved my problem.

- Check if you can do you data related stuff with WiFi properly

If you CAN sync your contacts etc. when connected to Wifi then these steps will help you reset your 3g connection. If you cannot do it even with you Wifi then go to a T-Mobile store

- Switch Off -> Remove your SIM card -> switch ON -> let it remain ON for a few minutes -> Switch Off - > Re insert your SIM again. after re start the 3G will start working properly.( This will reset your phone connection to the 3G towers )
- If it does not work then restore the phone to factory settings.( This has to work, If not, then you need to get your phone replaced ).

I resolved my problem with 3G problem by doing the first step. And i resolved my SMS not sending problem by doing second step.

Hope this helps

I'm not convinced that it's a 3G problem...

My Calendar still syncs, even though my office can only get EDGE.

Anyone else experiencing this problem and find a solution? It happened again when I made some more changes last night. Again, it was just with male friends.

Apparently Google took a political stand during the last couple of days as a showing of force. During these days, certain sex combinations would trigger the demonstration. For example, if you are male, then suddenly none of your male contacts will get updated for a period of time.:eek::eek:

Everything should be back to normal now since the election is over.

Lol, j/k!!

I don't have a G1 yet and wonder if synchronization of gmail contacts copies everything from gmail to the G1, including for example also the text under "Notes". See attached test contact.

I am having this exact problem. Was there anything you did to make it work? Has anyone else seen this error message? I worry about all the entries I made on the G1 not ever syncing to Gmail contacts...

My contacts have not correctly synced since 01-24 lol*BUMP* Mine hasn't updated since 10-28...thoughts?

In the end though this is why I don't trust phone contacts and still keep all of my numbers on my SIM card.

I found what the problem was in my situation, but I can't guarantee that it the same for all of you.

Basically, it was how I was categorizing my groups. I started separating my contacts by work - male/female, family - male/female, friends - male/female, etc. from my Gmail account (not in the phone).

After testing one group, I found out that you can't assign ringtones to a group, so I began deleting the group (again, in gmail) but did not remove the contacts from that group in some cases. Apparently, this screws something up on the phone, and it will not update the contacts that were in the group. The only solution I could come up with was to recreate the deleted group, add everyone back to that group, save, remove the contacts from the group, then delete the group again.

Details on the solution can be found here(#2):
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=483d27da67baa2e7&hl=en

I have submitted a list of bugs that I found to the Android support team, but have had zero luck with them acknowledging the issue.

Hope that answers your question.

I'm having a different problem from what I'm seeing here but this seems the closest forum for help.

The guy at the Verizon store mistakenly loaded all my contacts from my gmail account instead of taking them off my Blackberry. I only use gmail for a back-up account.

I took it back the next day and asked him to delete all the google contacts (they are not current) but the contacts list on my new HTC Droid Eris is still all clogged up with old google gmail contacts.

He instructed me to download drivers from HTC and sync with my PC Outlook from home. I did this successfully but the original google contacts are still there.

Do I have to go back to the Verizon shop to have this cleaned up? Or is there a way I can do it myself (aside from manually deleting each unwanted google contact)??

See that the thread goes back to 08? But I have a situation now ( Mar 2010) were Gmail contacts are automatically udated to my Verizon DROID - but the alphbetical order for some records are by First name and not the last. Input screen on gmail contacts shows last name first... records appear entered the same, what's happening?
This may not be the proper place to post, if not where might I get an answer
