I found the best thing you can do is to download AnyCut, then set up shortcuts on your, er, desktop directly to individual phone numbers (not just to the contacts). One of my 3 screens is dedicated to this.

Yup. I'm the same way. My right panel is used for this + anycut shortcuts to "wifi" and "battery".
It's kinda my productivity panel.
EDIT: Adding numbers to your "favorites" is probably the 2nd best option.

I am trying to figure it out as well. They say there is no program for it yet. SUCKS I know, its a very well used function to use..I will be lost with out it. Hope they create one soon for the phone. If you for some reason find out how to do it, please let me know.

Isn't the fastest way to "speed dial" your contacts just to use the "speak" function by holding down the call button?

That thing is not very accurate all the time.
I agree with the anycut solution... My left panel is dedicated to contact direct dials and direct texts.

I've been bitching about this since I got my phone on December. My first smart phone (cira 2003) had it and all my phones since. The shortcut "solution" is so-so because it's a pain to use while driving. I use an app called "Dial Favs" which sets up a list of my most dialed numbers. They are very easy to read and don't slide around like shortcuts of you press too long. Excellent for driving.

I've been using this application called Contacts Blast. I organize my contacts into groups. I love it so far.

Just got my G1 about five days ago.
I ditto this poster's request. For the following reasons:
1. I have used speed dial since the days when phones were as big as car batteries. EVERY phone has had speed dial. HTC and Android cannot simply eliminate the feature and force us to use alternatives. Speed dial has been around for 20 years, can't expect us to lose it, cold turkey.
2. Voice dialing is inaccurate at times, especially in noisy environments.
3. I have had people (and hot women) who have for years had dedicated numbers on my speed dial. They are going to freak if they find out they are off my speed dial. (They won't believe me that the phone does not have speed dial. Saying "but you are on my favorites list" won't prevent the frying pan hitting my head.)
4. Isn't "speed dial" in the U. S. Constitution, one of the amendments?

Make single touch shortcuts using anycut or better cut.
There is still no developer that has taken on the task of creating exactly what you are asking for, so it must not be that important.
This is the exact same answer i gave 5 months ago

I have tried AnyCut and dgQuickCut, basically the same similar type programs. When I use shortcuts to apps, and other things in the list, it all works fine. When I try to do either a quick dial or quick sms shortcut with either app, I get a forceclose. It says "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectidly. Please try again" then gives the fc below that.
I have a Samsung Moment (sprint) with cupcake 1.5 on it.
I have tried rebooting but it doesn't seem to help anything.
I used an app called speed dial. It was free but is now charge. I would love to use AnyCut but am getting the fc.
Any suggestions are appreciated to resolve this so I can use this app.

I prefer the kind of speed dial where you press a number from the dialer instead of creating shortcuts everywhere.
Speed Dial Old School is what I have been using. Press 2, then Call and I'm calling home. Wish it was press and hold, but this is close enough for now.

Here is how I did it on my HTC Incredible.
1. Go to Call History
2. Long Touch the Contact you want to set.
Contact option menu will display.
3. Select "View Contact".
Details Screen will display.
4.Long touch "Call (location, home cell,etc...)"
Action menu displays.
5. Touch Speed Dial
6. Touch Location and assign your speed dial Number.
7. Save
