Question about wifi on the g1?

so i went and bought me a netgear wireless rangmax n-router which claims its really good and has 3 internal antennas deliver maximum performance and range and blah blah blah! so when i connect to wifi on my g1 i can be right by the router and only get like 1 or 2 signal bars on my g1 why is that? and sometimes i can get full? any body else having the same problem?
