I looked into my T-Mobile account today and saw that they charge for IM using AIM. This is completely ridiculous because Google Chat goes as a part of the data plan, and you don't get a per-message charge. Why can't AIM use the data plan as well? I hope someone comes up with a Pidgin or equivalent port to Android.

I didn't even know GTalk was apart of the plan. I know when you select a data plan it says that the 400 messages or unlimited messages are for text, mms, and instant messages. I assumed you would get charged for any IMs, however having GTalk included with no charge is nice, it is a Google OS with integrated Google Apps...

Actually, I cannot say for sure whether GTalk is part of the plan. Perhaps GTalk messages also show up as "AIM message" in the account details. The time period for which I saw the report was when I was using both AIM and GTalk, so I'm not sure. But still, there is absolutely no reason why IM should be charged as text messages.

If it comes with Oz or installed, it might come up as a text message as all other Tmobile phones do. I have had to download 3rd party software on my blackberry to avoid this so until they make a program like Nimbuzz, you will have to take it.

Any im messagers except gtalk will be bill as a regular text... But if you have the unlimited you have to worry about text messages charges... Plus i used to work for tmobile and i have friends that still do and you have any ?s i can get back to you asap... It all depends on the ?

Yeah if you use alot of IM, the best route is to pay the extra $10 and get the G1 Unlimited data/messaging plan. That's what I did.

$10 is still a lot of extra money to pay. I'm planning to stick with the 400 text message plan, if IM uses the data plan.

Everything other than GTalk uses SMS to communicate back n forth. If you want to avoid that try using www.meebo.com (http://www.meebo.com)

How about using AIM through the Gtalk client as a workaround?

But this isn't the only place that talked about that.
T-Mobile, the G1 and Google didn't hide that the IM clients (other then GTalk) will be using SMS.

That's what we are trying to say...., the IM's you use are sms so counted as text messages, the only one that will not count as text's are the gtalk ones and that im not absoulutely sure about untill i read a little more.. the point is if u plan on Im'ing a lot on this phone u better get unlimted texts.

Gtalk doesn't load the aim contact list. I think they thought about it beforehand :P.

www.meebo.com (http://www.meebo.com) works, but it wont keep you logged in when you leave the browser. It is a temp solution though.

If anyone finds an alternative (i.e. pidgin, digsby, trillian etc) or anything else that works on android then please let us know!!!

I am in office and use Wifi for MSN, it is absolutely data, not SMS, why should I get charge on MSN? I think T-mobile is try to charge something that is not from their service.

What about using Web AIM or Web MSN? That should go through the 3G network or Wifi. We should not get charged for that no?
