View Full Version : Changing your main G1/Google account password

I needed to change my gmail password for security reasons, but I knew this would mess with the G1 account too, since they use the same login info. I searched for a way to change/update the password on the phone and couldn't find it. So, on a whim I went to google.com/accounts on the browser, signed in, then clicked on "Change Password". After changing it successfully, I went back to the Home Screen on the phone, opened the GMail app, clicked on Menu, then Refresh. I got a sync error, but the notification gives an option to re-enter your password. I entered the new password, and voila, it worked.

Kind of a round-about way of doing it, too bad there isn't an option on the phone itself to change the account password. Maybe in some future update there will be an option to do it.

Anyway, hope this info helps someone who's looking to change their password too.

good info,

but i think they designed it like this so if you got your phone "stolen/lost" you HAVE a way to change your password via online rather than you phone cause obvious your phone is stolen/lost =D

Well, you've ALWAYS have the option of changing it online, regardless. As far as the stolen phone, that's what the security pattern screen is for. As long as the hypothetical "change password" option requires you to input your current password, as it does when you change it online, someone stealing your phone won't be able to lock you out of your own account since they won't know the current password. So I still see no reason not to offer the option on the phone.

It is fairly easy, but not intuitive to reset the Google account information without reseting everything else on your Android phone. Go to the Applications area of settings and choose "Manage Aps" to locate three applications; GMail, Google Apps and GMail Storage. Open GMail and, if needed, "Force stop" then "Clear data." Open Google Apps and if needed, "Force stop" it, but don't clear data. Finally, "Clear data" on GMail Storage. Exit back to Home and open the GMail app to re-enter your Google account info.

Still works perfectly. Thanks!

This works on legend with android v 2,1.

Before doing a factory reset try logging into gmail with browser. Mine picked up the password change.

Nice and easy as I'd hoped.

Google checkout is used to pay for downloaded apps on my cell phone. What if I lose my phone? The phone doesn't ask for a password, it just proceeds with the payment. Is there a way to have a separate Google Checkout password from the Gmail account password?

I think some people are missing the point. Leaving out the option to change your password on the Android device is an oversight. For those suggesting changing the password on a PC; this is what actually caused me the problem in the first place! If you change the password on your PC your Android device will inevitably give a failed login when you next try to sync. You now have no way of (easily) changing the password on your device to match the one you have changed to on your PC. I have an HTC Desire and mine is not giving me the option to re-enter my login details when login fails. I appreciate the info from the user who suggested the workaround and I will use this method . I do however fail to see why Android haven't given the option to 'update' your login info (for those who have changed their login info on a PC) or for you to change your password on device where you are required to also input your original password as well.Neither would compromise security on a lost device.

When I changed my password on my computer, my Android picked it up automatically and asked me to:

1. enter CAPTCHA
2. screen pops up saying that my password was probably changed
3. enter a new password

that was it.

I'm on a Vibrant running 2.2. I also bought this phone second hand and am not able to remove the original owner's account from the phone or the Market. In Manage Apps I don't have Google Apps or GMail Storage, just GMail. Logging into GMail with my own account doesn't change the Market's association with the original account on the phone. I just get the error "You entered the wrong password or your account has changed.".

I'm also not able to do a factory reset on the phone. After a reset attempt and reboot I simply see a "Data wipe failed" error and nothing changes on the phone.

The phone came from T-Mobile but has been unlocked and moved to Wind Mobile. Is it possible I need the original SIM to do the factory reset and account change?

The best way I have found to change your gmail password is to change it on line. Refresh you gmail account on your phone. You will get a notification that there is a problem with your gmail account. Use the pull down screen to see the notifications. Click on that notification and you will be asked to change your password. Done.

While helping a coworker with theirs, I found this to work.

Go to your gmail app. Hit the menu button and then refresh. After that, I got a log-in page. Entered the new password and it worked after that.

Hope that helps

This one always word for me.

1) go to settings
2) go to applications
3) click on manage applications
4) click gmail
5) click clear data
6) reenter password when screen pops up...
