Is it possible to assign a function to the buttons on a bluetooth headset for the g1? i'm trying to figure out how to assign my call button on my headset to activate the voice dial?

also is there a way to confirm a number by voice? like you can say "call home" or something but then you have to manually select the contact. on windows mobile you're able to confirm by saying "yes" or "no" if you selected the right contact or not, so you dont' have to touch the phone.

just kind of defeats the purpose of voice dial when you then have to pick up the phone, find the contact and select which one you want.

Wow, you read my mind. I was going to post this same question today. I don't think you can pick or choose/confirm with the yes or no voice commands, but that sounds like a good option for an application. But the manual does not say if voice dialing is supported over BT, and I sure haven't stumbled on it accidentally, if it does. Maybe it's my el-cheapo k-mart special BT headset... I dunno.

I currently use a Motorola H375 bluetooth headset with my Blackberry Pearl and I can press the button to start the voice dial app on it no problem. I met my iPhone and G1 owning friends for lunch today so I could try out each phone before I buy. After pairing with each phone neither one responded to pressing the button on the headset. However, both of them did respond to holding the headset button for more that two seconds. It made both of them redial the last number dialed. I wonder how easy it would be to write an application for the G1 that would listen for the button press on the bluetooth headset and the launch the voice dial app for you. I already use this feature on my Pearl when driving. This keeps me from having to dig my phone out of my pocket and taking my eyes off the road. Anyone want to give me a place to start on making this bluetooth voice dial app?

I found out if you hold the call button down for a few seconds voice dial pops up =)

Holding down the 'call' button on a Jabra does not work.... calling all Android developers, it would be really cool if you could come up with some utlility to get us connected ;)

Yes, I too have this complaint. I've tried three different BT headsets...all different brands. None of them were able to initiate the voice dial by pushing a button on the headset. That is indeed unfortunate....even my 6 year old Motorola V330 phone did that.

I am very impressed with the intelligence of the voice dialer on the G1. It does an excellent job of figuring out who you are trying to contact. But I agree it completely negates the advantage of having such a feature if you still have to manually interact with the phone itself in order to select a number or verify who you are calling.

Definitely still some work to be done there....likely an improvement for a future OTA update I would imagine. I just hope these kind of feature improvements come quickly (like in the next 3-4 months) because they are such fundamental functions of any good cell phone.

I have two Jabra Bluetooth sets and they both work with Voice Dialing perfectly.

I do hope they get the "confirmation" to work with a simple "yes/no". I don't like having to "Poosh dah but-ton" after a list of ppl or numbers (though the phone rarely gets who i'm calling wrong). Hopefully they get this updated. And make the photos of who's calling larger too, please...

I really miss this function when my old Dash was running on windows mobile 5, but then when i upgraded it to WM6, it was replaced by a regular voice dial that didn't let me use my b/t headset anymore.

Just so everyone's aware, the APIs for messing with the bluetooth stack aren't in the current SDK.

We'll have to wait for a new version of the SDK (and thus a new point version of the Android OS) for any manipulation of the BT radio.

Do you mean that you can initiate voice dialing by pressing a button on your headset? This thread seems to suggest that doesn't work. This is important to me since I make a lot of calls while driving and don't want to be fumbling with the phone to make a call. Voice dialing works on my BB 8120, although it's far from perfect at understanding my voice in my noisy car.

I just want to chime in incase someone from Google is reading. I too can not get voice dialing to work on my car's Bluetooth or my Bluetooth headset. If I get caught messing with my phone to dial in my city while driving I risk getting a ticket. With my T-Mobile Shadow this was not a problem.

I bought the myTouch about a month ago. I was very disappointed to find that it does not actually have voice dial, and more disappointed that what it calls voice dial does not work from my Bluetooth device. My several years old T-Mobile MDA with Microsoft Voice Command was exceptional at voice dialing. Coupled with my Motorola T505 Bluetooth handsfree device in the car it was a very safe and well functioing system. I hope it is not too long for the Android phones to catch up to what I had been using for years.
