Well I was looking for the new apps but the apps wouldn't load. So I looked up top of the phone and notice there was a "G" next to my full signal bar. Usely it's a "E" with to arrows but this time it was a G. What does the E or the G even mean ? I know when it's 3g it will say up top 3g but this was just a G. So I went to settings and I checked data roaming but now the Internet still didn't work. What does data roaming mean? So then I checked just use 2g but Internet still not working so I unchecked of and still not working. So then I restarted the phone and web still not working. So then I checked data roaming and just 2g and waited 5 mins and everything works now weird a?
So to make it simple
1. What does data roaming mean ?
2.what's the "E" or "G" mean up top next to your signal bar with arrows ?
What's the arrow mean under E or G?
I'm confused bc I had the just 2g checked and yet I had a "g" I never seen before. So it couldn't mean 3g could it? I don't even get 3g in maryland all tho I did get it at a gas station weird. Thanks
I think the E is for Edge, I could be wrong.

G stands for GPRS, the service all phones have. Basically one step down from Edge. It's slower I should say.

g is usually for GPRS, meaning no data... sometime edge goes down for a bit. its ok. give a little while. (oh, and you meant urgent, right? ;) )

here is what i found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2498146
3G = Third generation of data connection (within area coverage)
H = HSDPA = High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (using 3G connection)
E = EDGE = Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (2G area coverage, no data connection is performed until you see the connection icon)
G = GPRS = General Packet Radio Service (normal and basic area coverage)

Anyone?Anyone know what data roaming is and if I need it checked? When I check it , it said that I could be charge or something. I looked it up in the manual but couldn't find it .

data roaming means that if you are roaming on a different carrier's network (more than likely att's) the phone will still use the data on that network... t-mobile has a national roaming agreement with att so leave it checked, you won't get any overage charges in most areas of the US, especially metropolitan areas...
but be careful, there are some instances where you can get charged... i remember reading a story where a customer was near the canadian border and ended up roaming on roger's wireless (i think) and racked up a 20,000 dollar bill, which was all legit charges...
if you're not going anywhere shady, just leave it checked
the arrows are for upload and download streams... the up arrow obviously for uploading (sending information away from the phone) and the down arrow is downloading (information recieved to your phone)...
also, gprs does not mean no data connection, its simply the slowest option out of the three...

Thanks dude . But after hearing about the $20,000 charge I think I'll uncheck it.

no problem, 99 percent of the time you won't really have to worry about getting overages for roaming in the US, so i assure you feel safe to do so if needed in the future

so what would happen if I uncheck data roaming? Will I still be able to access the web? I just don't want to take that chance.

if you're on t-mobiles network, you'll be able to do everything... but if you by chance are in an area and stationary for quite some time and you have no data access, just remember that you turned that option off...

um thanks I guess I'll keep it check unless I take a trip to Canada or the boonies. O btw what happen to the guy who got charged? Did he get his money back? I think I heard this on gizmodo/Engadget a while back .
