View Full Version : T-Mobile $5.99 T-Mobile Web "TZones" works with G1

As many may know, there has been a hack for a long time that has allowed T-Mobile Customers to add the "T-Mobile Web", formerly known as "T-Zones" data to their account for $5.99 per month and connect to it through a proxy and access the normal internet, but with some port and application restrictions. I have been using this hack for a while on my T-Mobile Shadow and then an unlocked ATT Tilt. I purchased a G1 from ebay, thus was not forced into a data plan contract or the 2 year contract renewal. I can say definitively that the G1 will fully activate and function (minus data) without a data plan. I can place calls, receive calls, send and receive SMS messages, voicemail, etc, and access any application or internet when connected to wifi. I really don't see the point in paying $25 a month for 2G internet, so I looked for a way to continue using the TZones. I found some settings online and through some trial and error I got it to work. What I did:
Menu->Settings->Wireless Controls->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names->T-Mobile US
I input the following settings:
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: wap.voicestream.com
proxy: 216.155.165.050
port: 8080
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: unchanged from original (http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc)
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050
MMS Port: 8080
MMC: unchanged (for me it was 310, I believe it is based on your location)
MNC: unchanged (for me it was 260, I believe it is based on your location)
APN type: Not set
For me this works for me to browse the full internet on my EDGE network. Some have said that this works for 3G as well, but I am not in a 3G area. There has also been reports of epc.tmobile.com working and not needing the proxy (this worked for my Tilt), but I could not get it to connect. This also allows for MMS access. Google Maps would not download maps through the proxy, and I could not access the Android Market. I also could not get push GMail to work either. I am in wifi areas almost constantly, so I can access that stuff through wifi.
I would really like this to not desolve into a thread where people argue whether or not this is stealing from T-Mobile, as they have known about the hack for a long time and done nothing, and I would also like to keep the comments about how pointless the G1 is without an unlimited data plan also to a minimum. I don't need access to maps and the market all the time, and I don't have to have push email when I can check it on the browser, so this works perfectly for me. If this helps somebody else then great.
My take, if you get caught downloading a lot of data - TMo might charge you an arm and a leg.

Like I said, this hack has been well known for a long time. If T-Mobile was going to lock it up or charge users for it they already would have. That's not to say it will last forever, but until they lock it, I'll continue to use it.

do what you gotta do. I don't really mind paying i'm in 3g and it works great. beside we have to support tmobile or they could go out of buisness and we would all get stuck with att (at@t) or verizon no one wants that.

he's right. this has been well known, especially on howard forums for a long time and on many windows mobile phones like the Dash. Nothing wrong with it. It's using the unlimited 5.99 plan instead of the 3g plan. Just takes some manual work to get it working properly since the phone was set up for the 3g data plans.

It is pretty cool that this works for him, and if it helps save $$$$ I say go for it. If I didnt work for T-mo and get the data for free I 'd use this method.

I've been using the $5.99 T-Zones plan to surf the web for a while on my T-Mobile Dash. And yes, this is something T-Mobile knows about.
I always love rubbing it in to my friends that were paying $30+ for internet on their phone when I only paid $5.99 :D Actually, I even got one guy to switch to T-Mobile!!!
My G1 is "In Transit" according to the UPS website and the first thing I was going to do was put in my SIM and see if T-Zones worked. But I was totally prepared to pay the full $25 (which is still the cheapest of all the carriers) and now that I know the market place and push mail don't work, it looks like I will be.
Thanks for the info!!!

good lookin' out, mZimm.
1) I applaud you setting the boundaries up front so that the thread didn't become a flame zone...that way people could post more focused opinions.
2) T-mobile isn't missing a dime. I'm sure there are many more rubes like me who chose an internet plan for something like my V3, which is ghastly to use, and therefore never used it -- especially as it is a biz expense for me. BUT, each time I was all like "i'm gonna cancel, t-mobile is stealing $20 out my pocket each month" something would happen where I needed it and then I was grateful and would have paid 4 times the price (which, come to think of it, I had...hahaha). There are 10s of thousands surely underutilizing such plans and paying for mZimm's access (for T-mo to look the other way on what is probably a limited profit bleed in comparison).
Come to think of it...you should thank me for paying for you access all those years. bwahahaha.
3) If they choose to close this hack down, they will. If reps are suggesting it to people, then anyone who doesn't mind going with what services you get should def. jump on it.
4) Times are TOUGH! so money saved is money saved as long as it's ethical. I'm in 3G (sort of...on the border) so i appreciate the full experience, but will be trying to get my data plan to 20 as someone posted in another thread, since I've got family unlimited messaging.

I am not in a 3G area, what exactly would I be missing out on if I did this "hack" (which I think is too harsh a word). I am trying to learn and not ask too many questions but I guess I dont see what the difference between what I do now $25 (EDGE and my wireless)... vs this $6 miracle :)
Does T Mobile charge you to switch back and forth on data plans?

I was using this on my previous phone, a Nokia E61i, which wouldn't do 3G in the US because of the weird frequency that T-Mobile uses. In my experience, the proxied Internet was quite slow, as compared to the EDGE connection that I get on the G1 now with the full data plan. It's not an apples to apples comparison because I haven't tried the proxied Internet on the G1, but still.
In any case, it's good to know that T-Zones works. It's a good way to save a few bucks while still have some data service available.

I've been using T-Zones since i joined T-Mobile when I bought a Dash. I didn't want a data plan on the Dash since it has WiFi and I'm always near hotspots. The sales rep told me to add the T-Zones plan, he said it was designed for WAP but that web browsing wouldn't be limited to T-Zones WAP. He set it up for me and showed me IE worked over EDGE.
When I unlocked my 1st gen iPhone I took the SIM out of my Dash and the iPhone worked fine using T-Mobile's data network. My G1 is using the T-Zones data plan, I've never changed anything on my phones, T-Zones has worked ever since the T-Mobile sales rep set it up on my Dash.

I used the proxy settings on my dash for about a yr without problems. Depending on the amount of data usage on your area it MAY NOT WORK. Tmobile closed this loophole in areas that where consuming to much bandwith.
Its nice to pay less, with the dash the only thing that didnt work was IM messengers, and email which was not an issues. Google maps worked perfectly. Hopefully they find a way to make google maps work on the g1 using the tzones plan, or else ill stick to the 19.99 plan.

T-Mobile does not charge you to change data plans, you can actually change anything in your plan and they don't charge you for it. But if you ordered the G1 from them you pay have to jump through some hoops to get the data plan taken off, or just tell them you decided not to keep the phone I guess. See below for what you are missing.

That's pretty much how it is working for me as well. I have talked to somebody who was able to get the GMail, Calendar, and Contacts sync working over the proxy, but I haven't had such success. I'll be messing with some more settings trying to figure out if I can get more to work, but at this point I'm pretty happy with just the browser working. I'm in a non-3G area, so downloading apps from the market, streaming Youtube videos, or downloading maps would be painfully slow anyhow.

When I pre-ordered the G1 I had to sign up for the data plan in order to preorder. After having my G1 for a few days I logged into My T-Mobile and it had my Dash's plan $29.99 voice, $5.99 T-Zones. I never changed anything through My T-Mobile, or any settings on my phone. All features are working for me.

I don't have 3G either. It's actually not that slow. It takes a few seconds to load a youtube video and once a market download start it's usually pretty quick. I can stream music and browse a few pages at once as well.

No. I have the G1 data plan for now, I just don't have 3G in my area. I was trying to convey that edge speeds aren't that bad for some of those uses.

well, I wanted my other apps to work so I added the 19.99 Internet plan. I added it to my account last night, and I just got an SMS from Tmobile stating the service was added. I can now access Gmail, Maps, Market, and Youtube.
So, $5.99 plan does not allow you to use apps that require an internet connection. The proxy trick on works for the Browser port.

tzones will not let you do anything on the g1. In order for tzones to act as a regular internet it needs to be configured with proxies but on the g1 one a method to do this is still being investigated.
I renamed all the other apns except for the US one and nothing seems to change and I only get gmail and google talk.

Of course you would have to use the settings. The SIM does not tell Tmobile what kind of phone you have, the phone does. The SIM I am using is from my old Motorola W490.
Tmobile knows what phone you are using, so everyone is going to start getting the same message that I did.

Dude, if you read the thread you would see that Tzones DOES NOT WORK with anything except the Browser. Even at that, Tmobile will quickly see that you have a G1 and are using Tzones. They will then popup a message in Browser stating your plan is Incompatible with the G1.

Incorrect, although it is very close. You got the proxy wrong.
You said: proxy: 216.155.165.050
Correct answer is, Proxy: 216.155.165.50
Everyone enjoy unlimited internet for $6/mth! (Not to still your thunder, thank you it was very helpful but with that incorrect proxy it gives an error).

What I did:

If this helps somebody else then great.

i did exactly what you did when i first got thhe phone cuz i couldnt get passed the sync with google upon booting the phone for the first time. today i ran into a problem with this. unfortunately...pic messaging wont work on the wap.voicestream adress. i had to factory reset my phone just so my gf could send me nude photos. was the photos worth losing all my apps and setting??? hell yea....but still...it wouldnt have needed to be done if i had just kept the updated apn addresses.
not worth it dude. if it affects pic messaging...it must affect other services. just pay the xtra 15$ and bring the stock price in tmo up.
ps. remotedroid is freakin sweet.

I have had my g1 for almost 2 months and the area I live in doesn't even have 3G. and i need to cut a few expenses..i know that the $5.99 tzones works partially.. but they no longer have tzones..they have web2go (50mb or 100mb) so i was wondering how would i make the browser work??
would i just hack it the same as i would with tzones?
is web2go worse than tzones?
do i have to do the settings > wireless controls > mobile networks > access point names > find the APN you're using and change it from epc.tmobile.com to internet2.voicestream.com. (like they have to with the total internet plan?)
thank you..help would be greatly appreciated :]!!

Can I still use this hack if I get my phone from directly upgrading to G1 from the T-mobile website?
Does G1 really support Adobe Flash 10 (or at least 9)?
Does G1 support Gmail Chat (in browser)? (so I can use Gmail SMS for free text messaging)
By getting a t-mobile G1 off ebay or some 3rd party, how will I transfer my phone plan to this G1?

I used T-Zones for my T-Mobile MDA for 4 years and had no complaints. Granted, I did very little web surfing and only really used it for my gmail account and occasionally Google maps, but it worked well.
For a phone with the amount of services the G1 offers, you need the unlimited data plan. Considering I was paying 5.99 for T-Zones + 2.99 for 300 text messages a month, that is 16.00 a month more for much faster access that works with every app on my G1, and I don't have to worry about using some unsupported hack.
I'll pay the 24.99 a month as it is still the cheapest deal going. Genius on the part of T-Mobile. ;)

Just go learn Java ;p
So you are only using it for WiFi? Thats like buying a bike and only riding it in your backyard.
Or anyone else's backyard. There're plenty of backyards to choose from especially in the city. What do you have against WiFi?

It isnt working because it doesnt work anymore. I had Tzones $5.99 back in October and Tmobile stopped the G1 from using it towards the end of November. Whenever I opened a browser it would popup with a page stating "This data plan is not compatible" or something like that. Plus, none of the apps worked, Market, Gmail, Maps, etc.

I guess you are all talking about TZones access on monthly voice accounts. This is a bit off topic.
I have a T-mobile prepaid account with a V330 'dumb" phone. I use the voice rarely and the prepaid is a perfect match. If I got an Android phone, it would mostly be for wifi, but I would like to be able to make rare voice or data cell connections.
My prepaid account gets free Tzones, but its just ringtone shopping and a few news sites (cnn, ...). I presume the $5.99 Tzones discussed here is (or had been) giving more general data access.
Is there any way to use an Android phone with a prepaid account that would make sense with my usage?
I presume I could use my simm card with an unlocked G1, get free wifi, pay as you go voice, the same lame Tzones I get now with no real data over ceullular. Is that the best I can do without expensive voice and data plans?

i hope that some of you can see that this guy is probably on tmobile's payroll. go back and look at his messages. they all basically say....fork over some cash to tmobile none of these workarounds will work. i hope i'm not the only one that sees that.
try it...if it works it works...if not then oh well.

LOL, i do not work for Tmobile, I actually dont work at all (student). Tmobile knows who has a G1 on their network and will block Tzones access. I didnt even buy my G1 from Tmobile (got it from Ebay) and they know I have a G1.

Funny, I asked T-Mobile that very question a few weeks ago (regarding phone theft) and the kid I spoke with said they do not have a list of the imei #s. Of course, that doesn't mean she was right.

Hey, for some reason this message keeps popping up no matter what i do "This is either a temporary problem or ur sim doesn't have data plan on it.. plz contact customer care"
it won't even go to the home screen anymore. I got it from my friend and it worked before but then it wouldn't add contacts for some reason so i reset it a second time (first time i did it to clear all my friend's previous data out) and now it keeps asking me to set up the android phone.. i've created 2 gmail accounts (one online and one from the phone).. can anyone help?
