I tried, I really tried to ignore the silver keyboard problem on low light situations but then I figured that I'm most of the time on low light places...
So today I went back to the T-mobile store and asked them to replace the phone and pointed out the "r" on the keyboard was lower than the other keys and the screen was a little crooked... they said that was all normal and the phone was working fine and they would not exchange it.
I said I've called T-mobile and they told me to take it back to the store and the guy at the store was reluctant to replace it but at the end they replaced and charged me a $10 restocking fee. They said that's because the phone wasn't defective.
I paid the fee and now I'm happy with my black keyboard! The down side is that my phone had a full bodyguardz installed... :( Luckily bodyguardz send you two sets :)
Well, that's it, the bronze is beautiful but the keyboard on low light is a big problem and I think the white will have the same problem...

my R was low too...so low that i had to stick my finger in a hole to get to the key!
i dont know why they told you it was normal. it is not normal. also there is a 14 day period where you can return for any reason. they shouldn't have charged you a fee. i would call customer service and try to get reimbursed for that. all they keys should be at the same level.

yeah, I have the bronze and that's my only problem. If there were a backlight control (to switch the key illumination off), it wouldn't be a problem. If you don't use it low natural light (a dim light bulb doesn't create the problem), it's not a problem . . .
I'm starting to wonder if the engineers didn't test this exclusively indoor, under florescent/incandescent light. It's only mid-afternoon that I haven't been able to seen the keyboard!
Does anyone knew if this phone have a photosensor, like RIM puts in the blackberries to customize the backlighting intensity?

Mine too, no biggie though. It still works.
I exchanged my Bronze for a black one as well, yesterday.
Paid the $10... no biggie... I'll be much happier. While I prefered the color of the Bronze one, the keyboard in low lighting was really unusable.
I'm now a happy camper!
Yeah they really dropped the ball on the keyboard in general. It's pretty much my biggest gripe.

the keyboard still works but that might be why i keep hitting the wrong button sometimes while typing.

LOLOLOL, coming from you that's huge! Mark it, out of Tiki's 3,627 gripes about the phone, this is #1.

the 10 dollar restocking fee is a valid fee for returning a phone and exchanging if not defective, this is a new policy that went into affect october 3rd, 2008...
unfortunately the corporate world dictates what is defective or not, and unless it says that specificly in t-mobiles intranet network that this is an issue with the phones and customers should be able to replace them, i'm guessing that customers are stuck with paying the fee because they're not directed to waive it... and i'm not aware that this issue has been recorded. yet.

Overall I love my G1, but I did notice also my F and R buttons on the keypad are way lower than any of the rest of them. I wonder what the deal is?Can this be repaired? Most likely just looking at a replacement G1 in the future. I'llbe trolling the forums for more info in the meantime...

2 through 8 is all i can see in low light drives me crazy they should really let us know if it can be fixed or not so we can exchange it or learn to live with it......:(

unfortunately, give it some time... i'm sure there has to be enough registered complaints for this issue to become official with t-mobile... with 30 million customers, they can't just on the fly deem something a warranty issue without waiting for sufficient numbers...
if anybody had a defective dash, they would know that t-mobile does and can make good on warranties... supposedly a screen bracket was not installed on some dashes in a certain large batch, and the screen would just crack without you even doing anything to it... i don't know officially, but my guess is maybe temperature changes, who knows... so many people had this issue and t-mobile found it odd that so many were breaking, that they had htc research it and voila, they found the answer...
so if a broken screen can be deemed under warranty (obviously one of the things that happens to any phone the most), i'm sure a keyboard issue can as well

Damn, that sucks. I also have a low R key and C key and it is a slight annoyance. I sure hope they don't sink further.

yep. I sent mine back and told them i didn't want a replacement. Then afterwards i just went into the store and signed the 2yr contract there and took out a phone. Going through the store is SO much easier...
no idea why i preordered. It came the same time as the release in stores ;\
