Seems to me that android is a little misunderstood. I think people were expecting right out of the box a software that was perfect in each and every way. Windows Mobile and Apple's OS, have platforms to fall back on so for them to make actually software for a phone would be much easier than google. Instead of making software that would enhance the phones abilities like Microsoft and Apple, Google is leaving it up to Steve Ballmers favorite type of people "Developers, Developers, Developers, Developers". Don't you agree ? . I believe it's totally in their hands to bring out the full on experience of the software, sure google might have its corks here and there but I believe its more a developer based software. So why don't a lot of people agree on this or rather understand it ?.

yes, that is the general misconception... they created a foundation for the industry to move forward, in no way were they trying to create the end all be all from the get go...

most commercial customers that don't do their research blame google, when they should blame the carriers and the handset manufacturers for not producing the features and software they're sorely wanting... its up to them to make 95 percent of the complaints people have right now

google is vying for success yes, but it will be a success no matter what imo... ITS FREE, no overhead costs for manufacturers... several manufacturers have android developer teams creating all these features for their branded phones that are to be released in the next few years... an operating system that is functional and capable of doing so much, and its free... if you're in business to do business, would you pay licensing fees to windows mobile or symbian, or create an OS from the ground up for your phone release? think it explains itself

I agree that google is leaving some stuff up to oems and developers to incorporate on thier own. With any new OS there is going to be the rough "teething" stage. Nothing will come out perfect, look at the 1st versions of every major OS. They all have grown and matured over time. Android will do the same, hell the 1st phone hasnt even been out a week yet, give it time.

This OS is ROCK solid and is going to be a major player in the following years to come for sure.

Yeah missunderstood for sure but its still a good operating system and has a lot of potential in the long run. Also most people proabably thought that because it was backed by google it was going to be perfect from day one.

Im gonna be honest with all of you. The Reason why this phone was/is such a hype. Is because when this phone was offically announced to the public. The 1st thing and the only thing people seen at that time, Is not the phone. But the "GOOGLE" logo. After that people started calling this phone not what it's known for which is the HTC Dream. But people started calling this phone the "Google Phone" or "The Gphone".
Once people heard "Google", They jumped all over the phone and pre-order's went as quick as 4 days, before all phones were sold out. Till this day the HTC Dream is still on back order according to T-Mobile.
For people who are coming from a Windows OS. Expected this phone to have everything there windows based phone had and more. But when they got there hand's on the HTC dream, They have come to find out that the Android OS was different in so many way's. When the windows power user's found out that the Android OS did not have everything they had hoped it had like, there previous windows smart phone. The windows user's started knocking on the Android, Talking about how much downfalls it has. In reality the Android OS has no downfalls. Just cause it dont have everything your previous phone had dont make it a bad phone. (Same goes for Iphone power user's). To me the Android is perfect the way it is. (Yes the battery aint the greatest, but we can deal with that issue for now, Until it gets taken care of.) Other then that, The phone meet my every expectation. Also people need to understand that this is the 1st generation of the Android. In another words, this OS is more of a test/beta to what the next android will be like. :)

yep, i know android as of now is missing a lot of features, but they're intentions from the getgo was to let other people fill in the blanks... do i believe t-mobile should have waited for the release of the g1? yes... do i think its smart of them to release it anyway and just wait for software upgrades? yes, because its the holiday season... people are gonna buy it whether its ready or not

I agree that the OS is certainly misunderstood, but I'm not too certain that it can be said that Google doesn't have an OS to fall back on. What I mean is Android is based off Linux. Though, I suppose it is fair to say that Linux is always in development whereas M$ and Apple-based software has "full version releases." As far as it being up to the developers... at least Google/Android is being upfront and honest about it! This is just v1 of the software. Was WinMo perfect out of the box? And while Apple's v1 iPhone is GREAT, is it really perfect? Isn't it also possible that Google left some things to developers BECAUSE everyone's going to want different things?... as someone stated previously that it's up to the carriers to develop these areas.

Why don't people agree/understand?..
Everyone has their own definition of what a v1 software should be. Also, it's been dubbed numerous times as an iPhone competitor and consequently, people will expect the same or better quality software.

...and, if none of this answers the question appropriately, just blame global warming. :D

Part of the reason I bought the phone is because of the development potential it has!

This is all true, but I think we are all also a little confused. I know that the phone is going to grow and evolve and the fact that developers have the source and an API for everything is great. BUT.....

People have to stop saying that some random Joe is going to fix everything about this phone, Google said that they are not letting people modify the core and then spread it out, sure they can but T-mobile will not release this to all phones. Think about it, if it gets out of hand then you have phones lacking some basic stuff and in the long run will break older apps.

My point is: Developers will be making some great 3rd party apps utilizing every single aspect they could dream of on the phone(Bluetooth?) But do not expect them to fix the fact the phone sometime hangs, these problems are left for google and T-mobile to work on.

I love this phone, and I am positive that Google is working hard on making it better and more stable, Some people are saying that it failed because of some issues.... Remember the first Iphone? was that perfect? Remember Vista? it still isnt perfect. Remember Windows XP? It took two service packs to make it a great operating system.
