On a BlackBerry, you can input accented letters (ä, é, ñ, etc) by holding down the letter key while scrolling the trackball. That didn't work on the G1 and I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Does anyone know?

You just have to press and hold the letter and you will get a pop up window with available characters.

Great hint, but now I'm disappointed. It doesn't have the two letters I need. When I hold 'y' I only get two choices, and ŷ isn't one of them. And when I hold 'w' all I get is wwwwwwwwww. Does anyone know if there is a way to get full UTF-8, or at least get circumflexed y and w?

type shift-alt-e- then the letter you want an accent over

e.g. shift-alt-e-a

found by accident!

Thanks! For the circumflex, it is shift-alt-i-<letter>. It looks like other accents can be done this way.

this trick remember me the tricks for videogames, "A, left, left, up, B,X,X,X,down", and sometimes smashing all buttons on the gamepad also works.

Why don't use the a,z,x,c keys which has no "alt sym" assigned? Write accented capitalized letters is very tricky: shift-alt-e-shift-letter. I'm from Valencia, I've got a dev phone 1, and write in spanish is difficult, because we have a lot of accented words, the grave accent has its key, but its not used in spanish, we need the acute accent.

But, this is better than none.

Greets.

HOLD DOWN ALL THESE BUTTONS AT THE SAME TIME:

ALT
SHIFT
SPACE

If u do it correctly then u should feel it vibrate and then u can type any possible accented letter u could want. Thanks .... loves&kisses ...

What if I have an external keyboard connected via bluetooth, like a Logitech tablet keyboard. Would it work the same as the on-screen keyboard?
