i am enjoying the gphone but there are alot of things that could have been on this phone by launch, here is my list which sounds alot like everyone elses and then some, please feel free to add and lets hope we get the ball rolling

1. Virtual keyboard:need i or anyone else say anymore on this only WHY was this missing???
2. File explorer: one of the benefits of a SMART phone is that you can manage your program files, pictures, music, text message in out sent draft folders. IT IS A BIZARRE EXPERIENCE NOT KNOWING WHERE SHIZ IS.

3. ALL standard options for our mms including subject (there is no subject field!) text size color, insert audio clip option (there may be one ihavent checked)

4. in addition to our mms we need a video player to record our drunken friends exploits.

5. the camera needs tweaking, we need more options to adjust our camera to our own personal preferences

6. we need total copy and paste, we need to be able to copy text off web pages and easier copy and paste from emails and texts. we need to be able to highlight ANY text on whatever page document email text we are on an copy cut paste, this type of freedom rings loud and clear in the hills of the boring windows mobile phones.

7. microsoft outlook contacts: yay we have exchange but still no contacts, yes google we got your passive agressive message thatyou want use to use your contacts, but we need outlook it should be standard, does windows allow a non winmo device to use their microsoft active sync?

8. we need a task manager, i know that android or heard it quietly puts programs to sleep once they are not used after awhile, but my phone serious slows down and is begging to have someone shut down a program that im done using while im onto the next.

9. the status bar at the notification screen needs to be intuitive, we should be able to touch the battery icon to see how much is juice is left , we need to be able to touch the wifi icon and turn it off and on as needed and save desktop space, we need to copy winmo's efficient all in one wifi blue tooth beam phone of and on, screen that we quick acess whenever we need to , we need to be able to touch the volume, buzz no sound icon and be able to touch and select our volume choices just like winmo

10. for the next design, we need something elegant and sophisticated, did htc purposely hide their sexy designs from you? touch diamond, touch pro anyone? the "tab" thing that pulls up the programs is very unattractive and just doesnt "flow" with the phone and the 4 buttons at the bottom, while useful are a little geeky looking in this age of sleek sexy smartphones, we need clean straight lines, something contemporary, the home call end and back buttons look hot on the touch diamond, not on the gphone

11. lets get a headphone jack, the peripheral opportunities would be endless!!

12. and lastly google although android is open to everyone, please continue to work on android and improve its functionality and implement new ideas if noone else is, we cant leave everything to developers all the time,

i am enjoying the gphone but there are alot of things that could have been on this phone by launch, here is my list which sounds alot like everyone elses and then some, please feel free to add and lets hope we get the ball rolling

1. Virtual keyboard:need i or anyone else say anymore on this only WHY was this missing???

Q1 2009, do your research... virtual keyboard access was not originally developed and was excluded from the SDK (software developer kit) so that is why you're not seeing it... the virtual keyboard will come fully operation with predictive text and a limited onboard dictionary

2. File explorer: one of the benefits of a SMART phone is that you can manage your program files, pictures, music, text message in out sent draft folders. IT IS A BIZARRE EXPERIENCE NOT KNOWING WHERE SHIZ IS.

did the iPhone have a root directory browser? no... its linux, easy peasy japanesey... obviously the layout of the iphone and the user interface of the android platform, are to put it rudely and simply, a dumb-it-down OS for everybody... minimal learning curve

3. ALL standard options for our mms including subject (there is no subject field!) text size color, insert audio clip option (there may be one ihavent checked)

4. in addition to our mms we need a video player to record our drunken friends exploits.

once again, do your research... its has been long known that this was not coming out, so don't complain about it... the phone platform and software are open to tinkering, ie a video recorder app can be developed with the phone, where as the iphone is a closed system.... boohoo... google gave this OS for FREE, blame them some more that they didn't spend extra time to make you a video recording app

5. the camera needs tweaking, we need more options to our camera to our own personal preferences

6. we need total copy and paste, we need to be able to copy text off web pages and easier copy and paste from emails and texts. we need to be able to highlight ANY text on whatever page document email text we are on an copy cut paste, this type of freedom rings loud and clear in the hills of the boring windows mobile phones.

windows mobile may be boring, but there are so many features that windows mobile has built in from experience that the iphone and android system do not have... people like you just take them for granted

7. microsoft outlook contacts: yay we have exchange but still no contacts, yes google we got your passive agressive message thatyou want use to use your contacts, but we need outlook it should be standard, does windows allow a non winmo device to use their microsoft active sync?

no, winmo only... and take a look at the android market, there is something called contactssync

8. we need a task manager, i know that android or heard it quietly puts programs to sleep once they are not used after awhile, but my phone serious slows down and is begging to have someone shut down a program that im done using while im onto the next.

you must be trying to download to much pr0n, mine does not slow down a bit... maybe a software crash here and there... read about their "sandbox" ideals, and be happy with it

9. the status bar at the notification screen needs to be intuitive, we should be able to touch the battery icon to see how much is juice is left , we need to be able to touch the wifi icon and turn it off and on as needed and save desktop space, we need to copy winmo's efficient all in one wifi blue tooth beam phone of and on, screen that we quick acess whenever we need to , we need to be able to touch the volume, buzz no sound icon and be able to touch and select our volume choices just like winmo

trivial

10. for the next design, we need something elegant and sophisticated, did htc purposely hide their sexy designs from you? touch diamond, touch pro anyone? the "tab" thing that pulls up the programs is very unattractive and just doesnt "flow" with the phone and the 4 buttons at the bottom, while useful are a little geeky looking in this age of sleek sexy smartphones, we need clean straight lines, something contemporary, the home call end and back buttons look hot on the touch diamond, not on the gphone

no reason for google to read this

11. lets get a headphone jack, the peripheral opportunities would be endless!!

same as above

12. and lastly google although android is open to everyone, please continue to work on android and improve its functionality and implement new ideas if noone else is, we cant leave everything to developers all the time

they have publicly announced that they will,

if you want google to read something, make it more formal... and do your research, i don't even feel like wasting my time reading your post, but i did, cause i like giving feedback whether it be constructive or not...

ok miss negative nancy , the point was not that these features are in development now , the point was that they should have been done at launch, you also failed to see that while i miss these options i am enjoying the phone. there is absolutley nothing wrong with having a file explorer, by you even saying a "dumb down os for everyone", makes you sound elitist and egotistical. and also this isnt about the iphone! did i mention the iphone in my post? i dont think so

i am glad you dont work for google because i would not be comfortable coming to you (with your snide back handed comments) with requests or suggestions for improving a phone that has alot of potential. denial is not a river in egypt it actually exists and you're full of it , i along many other people have seen their phones slowed down and a task manager would be a great addition.

im sorry that you took my suggestions for criticism and not something that could be constructive for everyone.

welcome to the world of public forums...

i guess you failed to see that like i said, google made this operating system free to act as a catalyst for the mobile communications world... they use up time and resources to do so, and many trivial items such as in your post can be addressed as they continually update their software... yes there is nothing wrong with a file explorer, like i said this is a basic part of what you're used to in an operating system, but you will be amazed at how much it complicates thing for the everyday user... it confuses people, and if you disagree with me, then i suggest you do some field research...

don't you think there are some corporate notions behind the time for release? the software may have not been ready and is definitely missing a lot of features, but have you heard of the holiday season? biggest spending days in the US? black friday? etc etc?

i don't care if you didn't mention the iphone, but obviously a lot of basic and easy to use user interface features were directly emulated from the popularity of the iphone... what else is there to compare it with, windows mobile? symbian? please humor me...

if i'm elitist, so be it... i'm sorry you can't think of the bigger picture... improve the phone? it'll be obsolete in no time, we're talking about improving the OS... and i will continually go over the fact that this is a fundamentally free operating system... sure they have their soft contributions and OHA support, but theres a reason that there are only really 3 major competitors in the commercial operating system world: windows mobile, linux, and OSX... reason why? its a huge undertaking... not only did google do this for the masses, but they also gave away 10 million dollars to entice developers to jump onto their bandwagon, obviously supporting the notion that they don't want the community to solely rely on them for all their needs....

i'll end rant there bud... don't want to get involved with some mud slinging contest, cause obviously you're gonna be calling me names later on down the road

1. Ok, Yes i've said in plenty of other threads. I don't care, squeaky wheel gets the grease!! Like my sig says, i would be willing to do almost anything to have my map pins and location favorites back in my maps. I'll even trade it for street-view since it seems to serve no purpose on this phone other than to show off. You cant street-view a particular address and you cant street-view without loosing your route. (part of the reason this concerns me so much is no one else seems to have noticed its missing and thus isn't bitching about it)

ANYONE AGREE? please see more and post here too!
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f12/devs-lost-map-pins-and-locations-reward-if-found-4692/

2. Where the heck is my note program? At the very least why cant i sync to google notes or docs? It can sync to my computer.. what the heck? No, using google notes via he browser is NOT a solution so i don't wanna hear it. If i cant edit a note later to access it if i have no signal (like inside walmart sometimes??) its pointless.

Give me those two things and i might not sell my phone on ebay next week.:o

@ Gateau Noel

#1 might be one of the first things we see on the market when it opens up. Yes, it is needed, even if its just the equivalent of a keypad with predictive text type. that would be good for quick reply.. but Ive seen it addressed to much i think we wont have to worry on that one.

#2 No crud?! Why the heck is that missing if it's so "open".. yet another thing left up to the devs..

#3 All of the AND... WHY CANT I DL MMS's?? I can receive them but not save them..huh?? No, i have to go through this dumb little maneuver involving e-mailing it to myself then re downloading it so no, somewhere on my phones internal storage i have TWO COPIES! But only one i can get to.

#4 Agreed, but will most def be handled third party quickly, so that's good.

#5 if they can give us some options with the camera, AT LEAST fix the exposure calculating software. It cant calculate a good exposure to save its life.

#6 Agreed. This should have been addressed better while still in development. It was noted so often that it had it, but its VERY limited. Also, cant save e-mail address to contacts.

#7 No comment, don't use. But i'm sure the people who need it NEED IT.

#8 Yes, i read all the material on that too. But the point here is that ITS NOT AS EFFECIENT as they lead people to believe. MANY of the games and apps i cant even start unless i reboot (thus clear tasks) my phone first. See #2

#9 It would be cool, but the basics have me more concerned

#10 OMG! There's not even gonna be one of these if this platform keeps driving people away at this rate. Yes, i know you diehards don't agree, but BELIEVE ME, there are a lot of potential buyers backing down because of the sheer amount of missing features and bugs. No following, No demand, no 2nd gen.

#11 I'd be happy if only i could have headphone and charge the phone at the same time! (but i did know this before purchase, not disappointed- don't know why HTC does that )

#12 EXACTLY. so far, a lot of devs don't wanna touch it cause they cant charge... they will be able to next year, sure hope they are willing to wait till then.. and g1's following doesn't get tired of waiting in the meantime. I might, long way off speaking in gadget time lines. Yes, i think google dropped the ball/passed the buck here. version 1.0?? You gotta be kidding me. Beta? no, even more unstable. I mean look at the inconsistencies with which people are experiencing problems? I don't wanna hear "oh, but its a new platform" either. Yes, i know that. But its not like the phone itself is original, so people who could give a crap about open source will go elsewhere, which means your beloved phone could be abandon-ware all too soon if it doesn't start to improve drastically. I'll give it a few and see if things improve, but i hate to say.. the minute something better comes along, android could be in a hurt from people like us who need it faster than 6 months or a year from now. We are a large part of the customer base. Yes, i know alot of the sidekick fans fell inlove with it. But sadly, they are young and part of this gadget generation. I'm sure if something better came out, alot of them would drop this and head for the next big thing.

Yes, i did know what i was getting into.. i read all of these posts. BUT no one mentioned it would be missing this much functionality with way more bugs than i have ever experienced on a new platform in any hardware. If i wanted to be a beta tester, i wouldn't have dropped $400 for two of these handsets.

Hey! Anytime. I don't know.. i dont want to sound like i'm flaming my fellow ACers but some for them are beginning to sound like the iphone fanboys and the problem there is that... GOOGLE is listening, or at least that's what they've shown to date. If no one speaks up about whats wrong here, they wont know what to fix. I'm not saying you and me, but the whole customer base. And why shouldn't i be unhappy about certain things that even my old paperweight of a razr can do but the G1 cant. Seem silly. Just this new fanboy base, if they don't speak up, it may never happen. Most of the people leaving this platform are doing it quietly, so that's not going to help either.

Oh and i forgot to add, just to make that list complete.... WHY CANT i store apps to the SD card.. why even have an app market with free stuff (for now) if i can only add like 10 programs. YES 10, that's about the limit, no an app isn't just a few kilobytes, its mega bites and many of the ones on the market are 3-10MB. If you only wanted 256mb on internal, than this should have been given... Oh, the devs'll fix it. Well, maybe not. Not to the point where the average non linux user can do it, which is a majority of the customer base... WERE NOT ALL linux geeks guys!! We may be gadget geeks... but come on... some of you are starting to sound like the elusive apple nut :D COMMUNITY.. spell it with me... C-O-M....

If no one speaks up about whats wrong here, they wont know what to fix.

Only problem is I doubt Google reads android community or they would have a rep here. If you want issues fixed (I'm talking about issues that can't be solved by a commenter answering here), usually it's in the google's android developer forums or in the official T-mobile forums that you might get a response. Here it's fine to bring it up here, but sometimes it gets repetitive because we have plenty of posts on what people want fixed with Android.

Here's the notes app you were looking for by the way.

Im Deutch..was? (as in what?) The point was the comment made no sence. Both you and the OP had valid points, granted, before you begain a slight flame spat. But i failed to see how any of that related to being "teens". I dont recall seeing word such as "dat", "yous", "mines", "bro" ect.. which are signiture of teens on BBS.. I honestly don't know anybody's age on this thread. Last i checked, my teens were a decade and more ago..so.. Just didn't make any sence, is all. Well, thank you, but give me some credit here, and the OP, that info showed up after this thread started. And I'm not saying they read android community, but it is ONE OF THE LARGEST forums out for this platform, if not the largest. And yes, i am quite sure SOMEONE over there scans the net to see how their new release is doing. If not the company, then employees of the company. I have no doubt. If Vincent can get hold of the engineers, then i'm sure someone who is an engineer there would find AC once in a while.

And yes, there are over 4000 members here now, there will be repeat posts because no idea is new. I'm not the OP though, but speaking from the other side, there's plenty of repeat posts in both directions, stop this, stop those. Fairs, fair :p And yes, i was planing on posting my bounty for map pins on those sites as well.

But come on, anyone here has as much right to bitch about missing features as they do to relish in them, right?

I have edited and added to my suggestion request list, i hope google developers get to read this.

1. Virtual keyboard:please work on a virtual keyboard as soon as possible.

2. File explorer: one of the benefits of a smart phone is that you can manage your program files, pictures, music, text message in out sent draft folders. A file explorer or several are now available but they are extremely limited, you can not copy move paste. We really need to be able to see the phones “tree” of files and copy move delete files where they need to be. The few file explorers out there are almost a joke and also I have created ringtones for the phone but cannot move them to the phones ringtone file, it simply wont allow it and my music player will play my 30 second ringtones and considers them a musicfile.

3. ALL standard options for our mms. At the moment we can send a picture but cannot include an audio clip, it has to be one or the other not both and also the phone does not recognize gifs! My friends send gifs all the time and im missing out! We also need to be able to save the image of the mms to our phone if we like to, not email it to an email account. We should have text font size color options audio options etc .Windows mobile has the best mms options. Gphone should have them as well.

4. in addition to our mms we need a video player recorder to record our drunken friends exploits. I went to a wonderful Halloween show and could not record a single second of it because my phone does not have a video recorder!

5. the camera needs tweaking, we need more options to adjust our camera to our own personal preferences. We need time date stamp, lighting options, sharpness and fine superfine options. I must say though that the 3 mp is awesome!

6. we need total copy and paste, we need to be able to copy text off web pages and easier copy and paste from emails and texts. we need to be able to highlight ANY text on whatever webpage, document, email ,text we are on an copy cut and paste it’s so easy on winmo phones it’s a no brainer lets get it on ours.

7. microsoft outlook contacts: we really need to be able to sync our contacts with outlook including calendar, is there anyway to make the google calendar, contacts compatible with Microsoft active sync?

8. we need a task manager, i know that android or heard it quietly puts programs to sleep once they are not used after awhile, but my phone serious slows down and is begging to have someone shut down a program that im done using while im onto the next.

9. the status bar at the notification screen although very informative and useful needs to be more intuitive, we should be able to touch the battery icon to see how much is juice is left , we need to be able to touch the wifi icon and turn it off and on as needed and save desktop space (instead of using anycut as a widget on my homescreen), we need to copy winmo's efficient all in one wifi , blue tooth, beam ,phone off and on, screen that we quick acess whenever we need to , we need to be able to touch the volume icond and be able to buzz, mute or be able to adjust the volume with our fingers.

10. for the next design, we need something more elegant and sophisticated. touch diamond, touch pro anyone? The "tab" thing that pulls up the programs is very unattractive and just doesnt "flow" with the phone. I think 2 soft right and left buttons would be great, sure windows mobile has them but its ok if you do too! And the 4 buttons at the bottom, while useful are a little geeky looking in this age of sleek sexy smartphones, we need clean straight lines, something contemporary, the home call end and back buttons look hot on the touch diamond, not on the gphone at the moment.

11. lets get a headphone jack, the peripheral opportunities would be endless!!

12. Text message fine tuning: I’m not a fan of the conversation text messages that we have now, I would rather have an inbox outbox, sent , drafts , deleted folder. I am experiencing conversation “lumping” and it becomes tedious looking for certain texts and also is there anyway we can have our contact’s pic in text? I love that with winmo phones! When a friend text replies me their contact pic is there and it just gives the text a more personable experience. Also the phone # or contact that is texting needs to be intuitive, meaning that I can touch the contact or phone # and either save as a new contact or dial the # such as winmo phones. Thank god we have group texts please don’t get rid of that!

13. We need a really good media player once again like windows media player. It should play all video and audio files and im starting to like having art work, we should copy apple and the artwork fill up the screen and also the phone should not look at my ringtones as music files as well, I can create playlists now which is great, but if I just hit shuffle, my 30 second ringtones will be included.

14. a more attractive pop email program. The pop email is almost a joke on my phone, it’s very unattractive seeing its file explorer. I would rather view my inbox and click my account to view the file explorer when needed than seeing my in out sent draft saved ims folders, which I rarely use. I just personally think its ugly seeing all those black file folders pop up. I want to see my inbox and the loading times for emails are extremely longs. Once more take a look at windows mobile phones pop email, they are wonderful!

In conclusion yes I reference windows mobile often, but that is because I feel they set some standards for smartphones that should be commonplace everywhere. I love all the versatility and options. Some of my suggestions such as headphone jack obviously cant be fixed now, but a lot of my other suggestions can. The gphone can be awesome if it was just tweaked a little more like a windows mobile phone. The gphone is awesome in its own right that new and innovative applications are coming that winmo phones just don’t get. I am thoroughly enjoying shazam, phoneflix, wallpaper apps, the much better web browser and love how my desk top looks with its widgets. I don’t want to go back to windows mobile right now, I want the gphone to be at its best potential and although the gphone is limited (at the moment) I will not go to apple ever.

I doubt the Google geeks even had a phone or used commercial type OS like windows. Geeks usually use something that is overly complicated like Linux hence why a number of application that is common to most "normal" people isnt on G1.

5. the camera needs tweaking, we need more options to adjust our camera to our own personal preferences.

I don’t want to go back to windows mobile right now, I want the gphone to be at its best potential and although the gphone is limited (at the moment) I will not go to apple ever.

i agree, couldn't have said it better. my deal is with the camera settings, hopefully we can view MMS pictures FULL SIZE, and have some functionality in settings/options, saving MMS. Camera software is crap too, shutter speeds are slow. & text msgs get laggy. maybe a more attractive UI for the txt msgs ;D

To be honest
I'm a brand new HTC Magic user and whilst you guys can argue amongst yourselves. I'm a Apple/Linux/Windows user.
I expected point 9 to be true.
I was trying to click the battery, I was trying to click the other icons that appeared too.
And I'm still not sure on one icon that appears every now and again (Looks like a refresh button)

It doesnt bother me, but I would prefer the phone alot more if it did!

I have edited and added to my suggestion request list, i hope google developers get to read this.

1. Virtual keyboardlease work on a virtual keyboard as soon as possible.

Google, to the best of my knowledge, does not monitor forums outside of their own Google Groups.

The virtual keyboard is present in the 1.5 release of Android.

That's strange that you have this problem; I brought up Astro, a free file manager, navigated to my "music" directory, and selected a random MP3 which then brought up the stock Music player. Hitting the "menu" button revealed the option to set the current song as a ringtone. I did not have to copy my MP3 anywhere -- why should I have to do that anyway?

4. in addition to our mms we need a video player recorder to record our drunken friends exploits. I went to a wonderful Halloween show and could not record a single second of it because my phone does not have a video recorder!

Video recording is available in the 1.5 release. Videos are saved as 3GP movies.

5. the camera needs tweaking, we need more options to adjust our camera to our own personal preferences. We need time date stamp, lighting options, sharpness and fine superfine options. I must say though that the 3 mp is awesome!

Freebie apps are available from the Market that handle most, if not all, of your requirements.

6. we need total copy and paste, we need to be able to copy text off web pages and easier copy and paste from emails and texts. we need to be able to highlight ANY text on whatever webpage, document, email ,text we are on an copy cut and paste it’s so easy on winmo phones it’s a no brainer lets get it on ours.

I've never needed this but I can see how one could want it.

7. microsoft outlook contacts: we really need to be able to sync our contacts with outlook including calendar, is there anyway to make the google calendar, contacts compatible with Microsoft active sync?

I've never needed this but there are applications available in the Market that handle Outlook syncing. To what extent I don't know as I don't use Outlook.

8. we need a task manager, i know that android or heard it quietly puts programs to sleep once they are not used after awhile, but my phone serious slows down and is begging to have someone shut down a program that im done using while im onto the next.

I'd say that Google needs to fine-tune the application lifecycle instead of providing a task manager to kill things.

9. the status bar at the notification screen although very informative and useful needs to be more intuitive, we should be able to touch the battery icon to see how much is juice is left , we need to be able to touch the wifi icon and turn it off and on as needed and save desktop space (instead of using anycut as a widget on my homescreen), we need to copy winmo's efficient all in one wifi , blue tooth, beam ,phone off and on, screen that we quick acess whenever we need to , we need to be able to touch the volume icond and be able to buzz, mute or be able to adjust the volume with our fingers.

Some parts of this would be nifty, but touching the volume icon -vs- simply hitting the volume up/down button located to the upper-left of the G1? Sorry, I'll take the physical button as the on-screen icons are quite small.

10. for the next design, we need something more elegant and sophisticated. touch diamond, touch pro anyone? The "tab" thing that pulls up the programs is very unattractive and just doesnt "flow" with the phone. I think 2 soft right and left buttons would be great, sure windows mobile has them but its ok if you do too! And the 4 buttons at the bottom, while useful are a little geeky looking in this age of sleek sexy smartphones, we need clean straight lines, something contemporary, the home call end and back buttons look hot on the touch diamond, not on the gphone at the moment.

Thats up to the manufacturers, not Google. I suggest you check out the shots of the Samsung i7500, which is very sleek and iPhone-esque.

11. lets get a headphone jack, the peripheral opportunities would be endless!!

Actually the peripheral opportunities are endless with a USB port, not a headphone jack; headphone jacks cannot control the device whereas a USB connection could. I'd prefer to see future devices have both a USB port and a headphone jack if only because I cannot charge the phone while listening to music unless I purchase an unsightly 3-port dongle.

I've heard that VLC is being ported to Android. VLC is a good media player. Windows Media Player is not.

I doubt the Google geeks even had a phone or used commercial type OS like windows. Geeks usually use something that is overly complicated like Linux hence why a number of application that is common to most "normal" people isnt on G1.

That's pretty naive of you to think, seeing as Google is a multi-billion dollar company whose applications are available on the web, for Linux, OSX, the iPhone, Blackberries and other J2ME-based mobile devices, and even for Windows.

Personally I find Windows to be over-complicated and absolutely despise that my company-issued laptop has to run it. I much prefer the simplicity of UNIX (any UNIX, I'll even use AIX) and not having to deal with a GUI all the time.
