help with contacts in email 'to' box

is anyone having issues with keeping their contacts in the email 'to' box? i start typing the contact i want to email, select it when it comes up, but then when i drop into the subject box or main text, the contact disappears -- is this happening to anyone else?

i can only send email if i full type out the email address, which is not really convenient...
