View Full Version : Ok please talk me out of going back to my LX... HELP!

I am trying to think of some positive reasons to stay with the G1.

Don't get me wrong I am not trying to be negative but I feel there is too much with the G1 that is undesirable.

1) The customization compared to the LX is to be desired for tones, vibrating, reminders, etc.

2) I rely heavily on reminders for work and must know about appointment with constant annoying reminders as the LX does or I am sure to forget.

3) Battery Life is just completely unacceptable

4) E-Mail notification do not work outside of G-Mail

5) No notes out of the box! this is also unacceptable

6) Vibrate is very weak

7) Flimsy creaking screen

8) Touch is not adjustable (At least I don't know how) and is not sensitive enough.

9) No date to stay on main screen unless you drop down the bar

I know there will be updates to fix some issues but when and what issues will it address? These are just my issues.

I really tried all week but I unless I hear reasons not to I think I'm going back to the LX before it sells. I purchased this at full price (mid contract) so I expected quite a bit more. If I have to settle I think price will win.

Appreciate talking me out of this in a hurry. I only have 1 day left before LX is sold!

Thanks,
Stan

1) The customization compared to the LX is to be desired for tones, vibrating, reminders, etc.

Use Google Calanders and Sync it. You should get a notification in the plane, plus you can customize them with tones and vibes (I'm pretty sure!)

2) I rely heavily on reminders for work and must know about appointment with constant annoying reminders as the LX does or I am sure to forget.

Google Calendar.
3) Battery Life is just completely unacceptable

It gets better as you use it more. People are getting a solid 16 hours of it.

4) E-Mail notification do not work outside of G-Mail
Have the email be pushed to your gMail.
5) No notes out of the box! this is also unacceptable
I'm 90% sure that an application will be released on Monday.

7) Flimsy creaking screen
There's an easy fix for this (Use the search function - Creaky screen fix or something of the sort as keywords).

8) Touch is not adjustable (At least I don't know how) and is not sensitive enough.
People have been saying that it's more responsive then the iPhone, so i'm not sure where you are coming from.

Ultimately this should be your decision. If the LX fulfills your needs better than the G1 and you can't/don't want to wait for the updates, then send it back.

As far as the creaking screen, they don't all do that, and some people with this issue were given new ones.

Well, in a few days, there might a huge rush of apps on the AM. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of what you just mentioned will be fixed. Keep in mind that you are not the only one annoyed at these problems. If you can wait a little longer, then I would say do that.

As for the battery, take a look at my other thread on battery life. It appears to be getting much better. It's now almost as good as my BlackBerry 8800. Plus, HTC is working on optimizations and Google is working on a task manager to kill processes. I think the battery issue is on the verge of being history.

As for the weak vibration... well, not sure what can be done there. I wished it was stronger too. But at least it's not as weak as the one in the 8800.

As for the creaking screen... I don't have that problem at all. You might want to get a new one.

i say if u like that suc LX go bak 2 it. gmail is jus as reliable as the tmail so wutz the difference. u only get like wut 20 tones now on the LX since the update u can hav however many u want on the G1 wit out buy'n em. n if u don't kno how 2 use a calender then u really jus don't need the G1. stick wit the kicc.

To be honest with you, I almost returned my G1 because I was so disappointed. But then I realized something: the Android is a whole new way of doing things and I wasn't used to it. Because it was so different, I was exaggerating its flaws and deemphasizing its strength. Now, I'm glad I didn't return it on impulse!

Is it terrible? Not a chance. Is it perfect? Far from it. Could it be perfect? Yes. It hasn't even been a week yet since we received it. For something so new, shouldn't we give it a fair chance?

Think of it this way: when people moved from typewriters to computers, what did they say at first? They hated the computers! They wanted something that would put letters on paper with every stroke. They didn't care to learn to work with the new device. Well, we all know what ended up happening. (Off topic... just imagine we have to post on AC using a typewriter lol!)

So, think hard before you go back to the familiar typewriter :p

p.s. this song might help you decide: http://phandroid.com/2008/10/20/android-rap-song-g1-love-video/

thanks for the responses..

I am using the G-Mail and G-calendar but the reminder is weak (vibrate) and it only reminds you once where the LX kept doin it till you dismiss. I get so busy at work that I need reminders up to the last minute before I need to attend.

I think that is probably one of my by bigger dilemmas? If there was a way to turn it on so the reminder keeps bothering you that would be perfect. This could be a simple fix but not knowing if it will happen is a concern.

Battery is actually getting worse... I got maybe 5 hours from when I left the house last night until it was at 15%. I do know I was in a poor coverage area for about 1 hour but still 5 hours! I feel like I'm going to have to plug this thing in my A$$ if it keeps up just to have a phone with me.

thanks for listening your responses are helpful to know if these may be resolved. I do want to keep it as far as performance and overall it is an upgrade but just some minor little tweaks would make a difference.

Reports say that 15% to 0 lasts longer then from 100-15.

The meter and the battery haven't broken in for you yet. Give it time.

Wow is that right? I have not tried that yet but now I will.

I bet you are right... it charges back to 100% real quick so this just might be the deal.

thanks Cricketman

The reminder is something I want as well. I hated my BB for not having it. I have only had one phone that had it, and it was awesome. That should be a very easy fix. Wait until at least Monday to see if there will be an app for it from the rush.

I think you haven't "burned" the battery in enough to have the gauge working right. After 15%, it should drop significantly slower. Over time, the gauge will adjust accordingly and give you a better sense of it. Like right now, after talking on the phone for an hour and having it off the charger for 2, I'm still at 95%.

Just a thought...

Yeah definitely have not let it go under 15% have been to focused on keeping it charged seeing it drop that fast... good point.

Sounds like I need to give it a few more days until some apps come out. Not sure if I cancel the auction on the LX or just hang tight. Guess that’s my decision.

thanks for the feedback...:) guess I am just panicking a bit. Need my annoying reminders though :(

Oh... and that video link was pretty cool.

A couple notes:

I too like having frequent reminders of tasks. I set up reminders in Calendar when I make the appointments and set a series of reminders (to go to both email and SMS -- since I did this before I got G1). This provides a series of reminders. I'm sure this will improve as more business/productivity apps get online.

But I walk the middle road. I agree that this is all new and I'm trying to learn new ways of working that take advantage of the Android OS. At the same time, you have to do what serves you. Going back for a while until things develop to your likeing isn't anti-Android. It's pro-you. And the whole point of these devices is to make your life easier. If you are working too hard at it, then that defeats the point. It might serve you best to wait a while -- you can always come back.

But if you are able to be patient I'd hold on to the G1. I am definitely keeping mine, even though the SD card and camera are doing something very strange...

peace!

In Google Calendar (the web version, I haven't messed with the settings in the Android version) you can click on 'Settings', then 'Calendars', then 'Notifications' - here you can set your default notification options. I think the default is one reminder 10 minutes before the event. You can add one every minute up until the event if you want. It's not an ideal solution, but it might help a little.

I think I am going to stick it out

The quick positive responses and suggestions for work arounds seem possible until apps come out and some issues are resolved.

The support received here alone is worth it...:)

Thanks

mine would last 1.75 days if im running jivetalk 24/7 and connected to wifi for about 12hrs .
if i didnt run jivetalk, it was an easy 4days.

It is very easy - get rid of your old phone and hang onto G1 for the time being. I am selling my MDA that definitely has more options and apps - BUT I have decided to keep G1 and go with it. Once I do not have the MDA on my hands anymore - G1 is the only one to look at and use it :) ...

It's like G-friends: you have to decide what GF you like more and what GF is promising more in the future - G1 seems to be a long term choice :)

I think you should be a little more patient since the phone was just recently released on t-mobile. Give it a bit more time and I'm sure that the bugs will be worked out.

Thank you! An honest evaluation of whats going on. People are flying off the handle here with the negatives and not giving any credit for what has been accomplished.

Two words for everyone - Windows Mobile. Enough said. You'd think with all the complaining that the score would be 1. Iphone, 2. Wimo, 3. Android.

Not the case.

i'm on your side, i've had a sidekick for 4 years, and so used to many small features. what i can't deal with is a missing feature. the g1 is cool, different way of doing the features...however like you, i loved the constant snooze bugging of the calendar til you dismissed it. I also liked the way you entered the info in the contact fields. I still can't figure out how to save a picture in sms. I almost wanna return the g1 like you til the bugs get worked out in a year or so. this is the price we pay for being early adopters with a 1st generation phone. I thought the battery life in the sidekick was bad compared to other phones. It got worse w/ the g1. i did notice at 15% or less it stayed stuck on that battery amount for quite some time. but the battery life given the modern age...sucks. I was mad when t-mobile turned off the t-mail account and i didn't get all the info off yet. Here's my answers to your questions.

1) The customization compared to the LX is to be desired for tones, vibrating, reminders, etc.

A) it works, just a different way of entering in stuff, takes a lil longer.

2) I rely heavily on reminders for work and must know about appointment with constant annoying reminders as the LX does or I am sure to forget.

a.) i agree with you, the snooze function isn't the same on the g1
3) Battery Life is just completely unacceptable

a.) it sucks, but break it in & wear it down. make sure the gps satellites are turned off, and wifi are turned off when you dont need them. also i was download happy during the first week with all the new apps. the less you do the above, the more life you'll get out of it i've seen...but it still sucks. doing the above steps will make it suck less.

4) E-Mail notification do not work outside of G-Mail
i setup 2 accounts. 1 hotmail, no succes. 1 aol dummy account with success. I set it to check every 15 minutes for new mail. you can tweek the other accounts. How many accounts do you need to have access to?

5) No notes out of the box! this is also unacceptable
a.) agreed

6) Vibrate is very weak
a.) anything after the sidekick II (which is what i went back to) was week for sidekicks or any phone. I dont think the g1 vibrate is that bad...its just not as frequent & doesn't vibrate along with the ringtone. I never felt the sidekick 3 vibrate (before mine was stolen).

7) Flimsy creaking screen
a.) read in other forums ppl have swapped for another g1. mine is lucky & doesn't creek when opening / closing. only slightly when its closed and i squeeze too hard. nothing that's noticeable or an issue for me.

8) Touch is not adjustable (At least I don't know how) and is not sensitive enough.
a.) i think the mouse is too sensitive, but that's minor. the touch screen takes a while getting used to. everyone has their issues of sensitivity from what i've seen. i've touched to click on stuff an its like i'm not double clicking enough. Minor.

9) No date to stay on main screen unless you drop down the bar
a.) when i hit the red hangup button to put it into lock mode, the 1st time i hit menu i get a clock w/ a date below it if that's what your looking for.

my issue is that after finally figuring out how to foward (2hours of t-mo customer care coudln't do it), how to save a picture message from text msg. I also don't like their keyboard as much as it thought. online it looked pretty darn similar to a sidekick. when i started using it, the buttons arent popped out enough as the sidekick...thus making me prone to more typo's, slowing me down also. I've got 7 days to decide if i wanna wait for the bugs to get worked out or go back to what i know how to use quickly.

I only need 1 POP account outside of G-Mail. I believe the notification issues will be resolved with the next OTA from what I am reading.

Guess I am just going to miss some of the features of the LX for now in hopes more apps will come out that fit my needs for the G1. I do need a more annoying reminder function. That is the biggie for me... all else I can deal with.

I figured it would be more business ready but know there is more to come... As I said overall it is an upgrade and if it doesn't work out then I'll deal with it then.

thanks again for all the great feedback and tips

Depending on the use, my 8800 could last anywhere between 12 hours to a few days. Like I have said in another thread, I'm a heavy user of email, SMS, chat and GPS. I also like to talk on the phone while driving through bluetooth. On an intense day with a lot of driving, 12 hours should bring the battery down to 0%. If only a few emails, SMS, and chats here and there, 2-3 days shouldn't be a problem.

At this point, I think the G1's battery is better. I have my WiFi constantly on. It's lasting almost a day (24 hours) with heavy usage.
