Has anyone else noticed that the G1's battery life is getting better? When I first got the G1, it sucked ass. Four hours was about the max with everything on (except 3G). Yesterday, my G1 lasted me a whole day with me using text, Google Talk, Google Maps, Gmail, Android Market, random apps, or just simply playing around with it since I was bored. Oh yeah, I also talked on the phone for 2 hours and played the Bond song a few times through the speakers. Everything was on, except the 3G radio. I haven't received the OTA update yet, so it can't be that. Weird huh?

yeah i noticed that too, bad news is though i can't determine what method been helping me because ive used both the drain battery method and also the not letting the battery died method (charging it as soon as the display pops up stating ya battery under 15% to charge it)

I have never drained my battery. In fact, I kept it charging for 24 hours once. I have no idea what's going on. All I know is the whole charge that lasted me 4 hours before is now lasting over 16.

Yup, I drained my battery when I first got it, charged it 100 percent, and its been getting better everyday it seems, also charges alot quicker too!

The same thing is happening with my battery and once it gets down to about 30%, it appears to drain at an even slower rate. Huh....it's a mystery... :)

Maybe we jumped the gun a little bit on the battery issue. Perhaps this type of battery becomes stronger over time... Either way, if they can further improve the battery to last several days on a charge... Well, goodbye BlackBerry! :)

I think the issue with the battery is not so much that it's getting better, but the phone and the battery are breaking in, they're communicating more. I noticed when I first got my phone that the battery sucked life from the top half and fell within a matter of 4-5 hours below 50%, then the battery life would start to stretch and at around 30% it would be falling at a rate of about 3% per hour under normal use. It still falls faster from 100% to about 60%, but overall the battery life, while largely the same as before, is being broadcast by the phone a bit more stable.
There's also the considerations of the people operating the phones
*As time goes on we learn how to conserve the battery more
*And as time goes on we become less enthusiastic and stop playing with it constantly, prolonging the battery life

i just think we havent been using all the features as much becuase when im on 3g my battery still sucks big time so i believe its the settings and not the battery

me personally i've been stubborn, im paying $35 data monthly, so ive left my 3g and wifi features enabled and ive been using 3g webbrowsing and youtube videos viewing and my phone lasted more then 9hours, and before it wouldn't even last more then 3hours, i guess time will tell i'll continue doing both and see what happens

I noticed the same thing last night while browsing for over 2 hours just killing time... I thought to my self "I think the battery is lasting longer" weird but true.

My experience as well. I've used some larger, NiMH batteries that needed to be "exercised" before they really got strong, in other words, a few drain/recharge cycles (like cordless tools). Although this is no doubt Lithium ion battery, I wonder if the same principle does apply.
Example: today i had the phone on standby with GPS, WiFi and Data Sync on for about two hours, and the charge indicator stayed right around 80% after that time. That's good!

Do not drain your battery. These are lithium ion batteries, not NiCad, and draining them at best does nothing and at worst can lead to failure. Most Li-ion batteries have a cutoff circuit that prevents them from being discharged below 2.5 volts. If they get below 2.4 volts, bad things can happen.

well I'm at 9% and I just want to make sure one more time that i should just let it die all the way.

guys,.. im running my battery down right now to do that first full charge, but this sucker will not die. i really don't see the complaints.
i got the phone on saturday, charged it up overnight last night via the wall charger.
my day started with the phones alarm at 6am, and its currently 12:45am.. almost 19 hours.
i havent been on the phone constantly all day, but i havent been avoiding it either. i did some browsing, played some games in the study, talked a few minutes, texted all day long, took a picture or two, played with the marketplace(with wifi on) for a while(wifi was on for at least 40 minutes). watched some youtube. about 2 hrs ago it warned me that it was below 15%. now the icon has a red slash over it, and im streaming imeem over 3g in a last ditch effort to kill this off so i can plug it in and go to sleep.
i havent had it plugged in at all since i woke up at 6... if it's gonna get better than *this*, im thrilled. if it stays exactly like this, im happy.
funny.. as i was typing this the music cut off so i figured it finally died.. nope.. just a hiccup in the stream. lol
and the wait continues....
edit: 12:51 am, the phone dies. 18 hours and 51 minutes of what i'd describe as somewhat higher than normal use.

Yup, I let it die 2 times( I am a Rebel) and fully charged it and it seems to be lasting a lot longer. Turned my phone on at 6 a.m. after a full charge. I've texted about 40 texts, made a couple of calls, watched you tube, surfed the web for about 30 minutes, downloaded 6 android apps, let my dad play with the phone(no telling what he did with it) and I'm at 26% now at 10:22 p.m..I also had it on 2g with no wi-fi or Gps on.

I should have let it died before charching it. I let it get down to about 2%.
Charged it till 100% via the USB cord and the computer at work. It got to 100% right before I left for lunch. So took it along with me. Before I was even done my meal, it was down to 70something %!
It's now at 76%
In less then under an hour.
That's crazy! I was only browsing the Market as well. Oh, and deleted two e-mails.

i noticed my battery was doing much better just after several days of breaking it in. then i decided to try the let it die method. i let it die, but then i didnt allow myself enough time to let it charge and had to pull it off at about 78%. it dropped to 30% in about half hour. now even a few days later it still is horrible. went from 100% to 60% in 2 hours with maybe 30 minutes of EDGE web browsing and the remaining of the 2 hours was standby with no gps, wifi, or 3g.
i guess my suggestion is that if you let it die, make sure you fully recharge it.

I agree that the settings make a big difference because the first day I got my phone, no calls, phone was suicidal in 4 hours (you need to charge me before I shut down!!!) becuase it was synch-ing forever. Once

I pulled my phone off my wall charger 20 min ago. Since then all I've done is sent two MMS and deleted about 5 apps. Down to 86%. Starting to rapidly become "worst.phone.ever."

I've noticed that my battery lasts a lot longer than when I first got the phone. The first day it died around 2:00pm, but since then it has lasted much longer. I use the music player all day, send a few SMS in the morning and use the web for at least an hour a day, and i'll usually end up with around 30% by 8:00pm. One thing I have noticed though, when i charge with the usb cord, it doesn't stay charged long at all.

Hmmm...The only thing funny about my battery (which is like everyone else's) Is that although the battery gets low mad fast....When I played my music for 2 hours...the battery didn't even blink! Strange.

I'm not liking the battery issue at all. Let it die last night plugged in wall charger at around 11pm woke up at 7am fully charged, did some browsing with WiFi on (since I'm not in 3G area) made a few calls, checked emails, turned on bluetooth for ride to work and by 2pm down to 15% and warning message appeared. My phone is now charging in the car and will try to let it die again to night and see what happens. By the way did have Auto Sync on all day which I will change to off for my next test run.

DAMN I thought mine was bad. Mine last about 7 hours b4 going yellow and after about 8 its at 15%. That sucks cuz around that time I'm about to get off and if i need to go somewhere after work, I have to go with an almost dead battery. This is my biggest complaint about the G1.
I have heard that some people get like 18 hours off their battery. I guess they were lucky ones. Cuz I think the majority of people's batteries suck.
Oh BTW I only text and use the browser while at work, its rare that I'll make a phone call. Also GPS is always off.

My battery life rocks... I can get a over 24 hours on a single charge. The other night I meant to charge it when it was sitting at 20% with 3G on and wifi on. I ended up passing out and not charging it, but when I woke up around 10 it was only sitting at 15%. And that was aprox 30 hrs of runtime on the battery and an hour charge before I passed out.
Then the next day, yesterday, I hadn't charged it since then and now I am sitting at 31%. Thats with moderate usage (browsing, shoping, videos, youtube, games, gmote, calls, text, and the usuall show off demo, etc) and partial 3G/wifi when necessary. (Brightness all the way down except while watching videos)(sync has always stayed on)
*Update: I still havent charged the phone since yesterday morning, and I'm sitting at 17% with an approximate runtime of 36 hours on a single charge before I'm about to put it on the charger when it finally hits 15%. Thats about 6 more than yesterday.
One main reason why some people reccomend draining the battery is to callibrate the battery meter. So 15% charge may really mean 40%. Some people have noticed that it takes longer to drain at lower percentage levels than at higher percentage levels. Callibration time!?! I always perform a Callibration on all of my rechargeable devices right when I get them, Full charge->full drain->full charge->enjoy.
Originally after my 1st drain I probabaly got 12+ hours of use out of the phone. So I intended to do a 2nd drain of my battery, but I was interrupted by a phone call from my lady, so I connected the charger when it was at 1%. Unplugged it at 5% because I thought I was going to end my call, but I didnt and it went back to 1% and connected the charger again. Finally the call ended and it was at 4% so I disconnected the charger and let it drain again. I'm not saying that is the reason why I have a good runtime on my battery by any strech of the imagination. Just reporting my findings.
