Hi
I just got my G1 off eBay. The guy who sold it to me are including unlock code and instructions. But does an unlocked G1 need to be activated with a t-mobile SIM card? Or should it just work straight out of the box? I'm placed geographically in Denmark.
Btw. Since I'm not a tmobile customer but the phone comes unlocked. Where and how do I setup voicemail number, SMS central number, MMS settings (like server etc)?
Will I also (in Denmark) be able to get G1 os/phone updates. How and when?

I think his question was: does the phone have to be activated with a Tmobile SIM card before it can be unlocked? Or can you use any SIM card?

My question is. If I got the official unlock code from T-Mobile. Do I later have to activate the phone with a T-Mobile card, or will the unlock make the phone "open for other carriers" and no more activation is needed?

From what I've heard, you need a data plan on the SIM you'll be using it with. Then you just unlock the phone, boot into safe mode (press menu when starting up), and change the network settings to that of your carrier.
Then you can boot the phone up normally, and activate it. I'd be interested to hear if you have any success doing this, though.
(Activation is just linking the phone to your Google Account.)

How does the phone know the network settings of the SIM card you are unlocking it with?

It won't; you need to boot it into safe mode (hold menu when turning it on), which temporarily lets you gain access to the Settings.
Then you have to go into Settings, find the Network settings, and plug in your carrier's network settings in there.

IF you unlock the G1 and connect to a WiFi network, will the Google accounts work when connected on the WiFi?

Ok. Guys this is how I activated my G1 on an European carrier (TeliaSonera):
1. Requested the unlock code from T-Mobile
2. Booted up in safe mode and created new APN for my carrier
3. Rebooted, Unlocked the G1 and then linked the G1 with my current carrier
4. Everything works: 3G, Edge, Wifi, GSM etc. Haven't tested MMS yet though ;-()
5. That's it :)
