Yesterdya I posted the news about the Sprint CEO saying .. "Android is not ready yet for Sprint to put its name on it"

You guys don't realize what this means for you?...

That means for the time being Android phones is a Tmobile thing .. it's like Iphone with a t and t .. BUT THAT'S NO THE ROUTE that google wants to take...

Remember ..
Verizon hates Google's guts
AT & T is married to Apple .. they will wait until Android becomes more popular..

The 2 smallest cell phone companies in the US were embracing Android.. but that's not the case with this recent Announcement...

I'm thinking Sprint wants to wait for 4g before they jump on Android.. espeically since Google funded thier 4g network..

but IT WILL BE TOO LATE ... a lot of companies are looking to see how Android will take off .. and it won't take off if it's only tied to the smallest cell phone company in the US ... Many ppl are upgrading to G1 .. not switching from another carrier...

I 'm a sprint custmer... and I've been waiting for an announcement from Sprint since forever... and this is bad news...

here's the orginal thread people... THIS IS NOT LOOKING GOOD ..

There are already a few companies that are gonna be making unlocked phones with android. at least 2 or 3 which were posted on the News page on AC.

doesnt samsung have a 300 member team on the android OS?

Its not something to worry about, Google is smart, even if some dont like them, they still will do the damn thing!!

Dude calm down, the reason android is not ready for Sprint yet is because they have to port the code over to a CDMA platform. Qualcomm and Sprint are both working on this as we speak under the OHA partnership umbrella.

Either way, GSM is the dominant technlogy and I doubt that a single, globally irrelevant CDMA carrier would make or break Android.

New products on the market definitely require some time to gain the specific place and start moving in different directions. I think that CEOs should spare everyone of their announcement for now if they are going to have Android OS on their devices or not. Why? They do give the answer by saying - we are waiting so Android is more popular.
What popularity they have in mind, there was no explanation. However, we are in the third day of the OS seeing light of the day - and CEOs already know what will be popular... I don't know - to me this sounds like the message that was said way to early.

Let's see what happens in 2009.

PS. I don like Sprint ;)

America is NOT the centre of the universe. Just because 1 American company does not want to use Android, does not mean it is doomed.

I dunno about android being dead. I feel like most people got the iPhone cause of all the hype that was created by apple. They didn't know the pros and cons of the operating system. Also it seems like people buy a phone because of the phones looks and not the software that is running on it. At least the majority of the people. Then there is the people that look at the potential of the phone in the long run.

I'm in the same boat. I've been waiting (im)patiently for an announcement from Sprint. This sucks.

...and I also had the same 4G theory. Their first Android phone would be a great time for hype Wimax.

If you are going to quote a story, you need to give the full picture...Dan Hesse went on to say the following:

But Hesse promised to sell a phone powered by Android “at some time in the future.”

Currently, Sprint's only flag ship phone is the Samsung Instinct. I don't think WiMAX plays a big factor in whether Sprint is going to market with Android...This reminds me of when Verizon BIG BOSS said --- we'd never go to market with the iPhone --- and now look who's got egg on their face and scrambling to get an iPhone like success that at&t is having...(a la the LG Dare and BlackBerry Thunder). I think there might be some hard feelings that Google decided to launch Android on T-Mobile (possibly because of Andy Rubin's relationship with T-Mobile over the Sidekick line). Of course Dan Hesse will "sort" of bad mouth Android to keep their existing customers from defecting over to T-Mobile for the G1 very much like when their customers left Sprint for the iPhone/iPhone 3G.

I agree....

Dan's comment has the opposite effect on me. When he bad mouths Android it makes me think I'll have to wait till end of next year. For that, I jump on to Tmobile and enjoy it as of now.

Ha

T-mobile may be the fourth largest carrier in the United States, but internationally it the world's sixth largest mobile phone service provider by subscribers and the third largest multinational.

Worldwide AT&T is a distant eleventh worldwide and Verizon is an even bigger fifteenth behind.

So If T-Mobile eventually gets Andriod phones to all its users that want it, how is Android doomed?

There are also 5 other international carriers that are plenty bigger than T-Mobile so they are options that have not closed their doors to Andriod.

So why is it that Android is doomed?

OMG sign me up for Sprint!!1!11!!1!

So we're just supposed to overlook all of the ACTUAL partnerships and support Google has, the presence of T-Mo/DT worldwide AND the fact that Sprint has been dismal over the past year?

Yup! If Google could get Vodafone to sign on, what's-his-name from Sprint (which is treading water ever since their acquisition of Nextel) will end up out of a job.

and the WiMax issue? Red herring.

Remember Android is just an OS for mobile phones. It can be used on any mobile phone that is compatible with Android. (More like Windows mobile. All carriers have phones with winmo on it) I'm guessing this is the same direction Android is heading towards.
In the case of iPhone.. the OS, handset and the carrier are tied together, which I personally feel is not a good business model for the long run. Apple followed this business model back in the day with their Mac OS and lost to Microsoft big time. I can see a repeat of this, this time it might be Android who's going to take their business.
So I don't see how Sprint saying "Android is not ready yet for Sprint to put its name on it" is going to doom Android. Moreover Sprint is going down fast. I highly doubt Sprint is going to be around for long. End of the day I think TMobile has gained immensely with the release of G1.

In addition to the other points other people have posted I wanted to add this news:
http://www.moconews.net/entry/419-china-mobile-to-release-android-based-phone-from-lenovo-mobile-report/

China Mobile is the world's largest mobile company with 500 million subscribers! Sprint has a relatively paltry 52 million and doesn't even make the top 20 list worldwide. Android is NOT doomed at all without Sprint.

What this news only means it that a Sprint Android phone is delayed until later.

Wait is this coming from the same company with the terrible customer service, and hidden charges on your bill. I'll pretty much disregard anything this company or its CEO has to say about anything.

Just realized this is thread is more about Sprint than it is T-Mobile, G1 or Android. So moved it over to the Sprint section.

you're nitpicking .. this thread will never see the light of day.. under this section..

Don't fret too much. Remember this is new technology, some one will always say something to "kick the dog" per say. And big deal, maybe Verizon and Sprint aren't super friendly, AT&T will get android, just wait. Plus your just looking at the U.S. The European and Asian markets are HUGE. Android will live on, its just a baby learning to walk, the more you put it down, the harder it will be for it to get back up, but once it does, its going to be harder to knock it down again :)

I think ATT will prob be one of the last to bring on an Android device. It would be sweet if they did, but Im sure Apple is doing everything they can to persuade ATT not to get an Android device.

No kidding. @OP, what exactly do you think is going to happen? The Android source code is going to implode from lack of interest? If that was a possibility, linux would have died in the 90s.

If nobody cared about Android and the application hadn't been built yet, then maybe it's future might be in doubt. We're way past this point though. the launch has gone well enough already to ensure there will be other adopters.

i dont think Android is doomed by any mean. Let it be Sprint, AT&T or Verizon, Android has got itwn own space and pace. Its not going to end just bcoz verizon or Sprint may turn its back towards it. Infact, the space Android is growing bigger, network providers are not able to manage . The recent Docomo and Google accusation (http://www.dazeinfo.com/2012/02/01/docomos-warning-to-google-is-not-the-solution-for-service-disruption-on-wednesday/) is the real example of this. If Docomo is not able to sustain along with Android growth, how come Google is responsible for it !!!

I feel Android doesnt need them.....they need Android if theyt really want to win a long run game !!!! Oh yaa....Android will never be dommed
