My G1 has a finicky compass. More often than not, it reads 90 or 180 degrees off, meaning when I point north, it reads south or west.
Not a huge deal, but it means Wikitude and Panoramio give me wrong info. If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know.

Map mode if you installed Spare Parts, and in Compass mode in street view, and in Wikitude and Panoramio.
Yes, the G1 has a compass.

It will probably be back soon, it wasn't very useful except for the compass map view thing. Keep in mind I got my G1 before release date.

Sometimes you have to recalibrate the compass. You can do this by moving the phone in all directions (N,S,W,E, up and down).
Also, make sure that there are no electronic devices close by. For example, if you have your phone on a closed laptop, it would show different results.
I also noticed that the compass does not work well next to a car and not at all in a car. Running engine does not even matter. The magnetic fields in a car are enough to distort the compass.

I had the same problem, until I came across another posting suggesting that every now and then, when the compass appears to be stuck, you may need to tap the G1 a couple of times, perhaps holding it upside down, to get it unstuck. That helped for me; after I do that it seems to be pointing in pretty much the same direction as the analog compass I have. (even if it's still a bit shaky, it seems)
Funny how with such an advanced piece of kit you sometimes still have to revert to old-school habits such as kicking the device.. :-)

Luckily I found out later the same post, and it helped me too. Yeah, it's really strange method for high tech device.
Thank you for the effort to answer the question though:)
