Here is what i got so far. I bought a g1 off of ebay, got an unlock code from tmobile, used a friends tmobile sim card to go through the activation. Now I have my AT&T sim card in the phone with Phone calls, and messaging working but no Edge/GPRS. I don't know how you set this up in android and need some help please. Thanks, Jared

as far as I know att has a differnt frequency then tmobile and the g 1 can not read the att frequency for data. I am not sure of all the details but I know I have read something to this effect in these forums. I am sure someone in here will be glad to go in to further detail for you.

It is the 3g that is on a different frequency. The GPRS works on the same.

Yes unlocked your G1 cannnot be used for data on antother network you have to have T-Mobile and the tmo data feature other than that it wont work.

Actually no, just go into Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names>Menu>New APN

Now google ATT's Network APN settings, and fill them in the blank fields on your G1.

Hope that helps.

ya but it wont fully work like it will with tmo and will forsure not connect to att 3g network.

why does everyone have to break the rules. just stay on tmobile or wait for att to come out with an android device. at least that way you have a chance at getting 3g.

If you read his post, you can see that he realizes that. That is why he refers to EDGE and GPRS. Any yes, he will have functioning data services as long as he has data on his ATT line. He may not be able to access the IM client or other MP, but he WILL have data.

You know how that goes. I think its cool he admires TMO's great handsets. I myself have to admit to having quite a few unlocked carrier branded devices.:D

For real my take is you unlock a phone and go to another carrier and it doesnt work fully well its not meant to be used on that carrier. I hear this stuff all day at work people complaining bc there non tmobile phone wont do certain things. Well its not set up for the network and we cant make it work if its not our device.

My question is how do you tell the G1 which network to dial? I have tons of APNs in my settings, if I add another will it automatically use that one?

Mine must be weirded out then, Its unlocked, past activation fine, I have the correct AT&T settings but it seems that the web doesn't want to work.

Can I just delete all the T-Mobile APN's and just use the AT&T one? I shouldnt need the T-Mobile APN's anymore, right?

Fixed it, all I had to do was change the MNC to 410.

Everything works, and hot damn this is an amazing phone.

To all the people in this thread who are claiming that the G1 can't/won't work on another network please refer to the OHA (Open Handset Alliance). I understand the hardware limitations (3g support) but this phone is designed to work on other networks.

Matt use this one because the username needs to be all caps, mmsc needs http:// in front of it, and mms proxy needs wireless.cingular.com.

Bolded part neds to be in caps

sorry don't mean to sound rude, but nope didnt need to be in caps, just the pass does actually it was an extremely easy fix, just needed to do a "master reset" basically just cycle the power on the phone and it worked fine for mms after that, apparently you need to cycle the power so the phone knows that it's provisioned for that service

Minimal settings that work for me:

Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com

Possibly cutting out some of the unnecessary stuff will help.

Everything works on my dev-G1, but mms is slow.

ok quick question- my friend who is on AT&T wants to buy a G1 off of ebay and use it on his network. I got an unlock code for my G1 from TMobile in the hope that we could test out his sim card in my phone to see if everything works before he drops $200 on a non-returnable phone.

My question is this- if I pop in his sim card and set up the phone for AT&T to show that it works will i be able to just popo in my sim card and easily get my phone back to normal after the test? Is there any risk involved in doing this as i dont want my phone on AT&T permanently?

thanks

OK so clarify this for me-- We did the AT&T sim card switch- I have followed all the steps on this post and everything seems to work just fine except 3G. Am I correct in thinking that my friend will not be able to access AT&T 3G network on a G1 with an AT&T sim card? Thanks for clarifying

G1 comes with 2100mhz, basically world 3G standard. AT&T uses 1900mhz. iPhone works on both.

why does ATT have to have their own frequency????

Hmmm... maybe so you will buy their phones if you want to use their network? Maybe... to keep you on their network... maybe.

Hello everyone - a few quick questions:

1. Can you push Yahoo email to your G1 phone on the AT+T network?

2. I had a Blackberry Curve 8300 with all my contacts and phone numbers on the SIM - I put the SIM into the G1 but the contacts didn't come over - is there a way I can get them into the device without re-entering them?

Thanks!

I'm currently having issues with MMS on my G1 with the AT&T network. I can't send or receive MMS messages, and this is starting to bother me knowing there are people that can.
I have the iPhone 2g data plan and everything works great besides MMS. Could this be because the iPhone data plans doesn't support MMS?

my current APN settings are as follows:

Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
User Name: wap@cingulargprs.com
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410 (I live in New Jersey)
APN Type: <not set>

any help is greatly appreciated.

Correcting myself. iPhone will not work on TMo 3G even though they both do 2100 Mhz, the uplink for TMO (1700 Mhz I believe) acts like a signature detection on the network and will not allow its use. I have an unlocked N80 (Euro 2100 Mhz like iPhone) and it detects a 3G TMo signal, but it's not usable, as is turns out. I was stupidly presuming you could download on the 2100 and upload on Edge -- but it won't let you.

Well you can always try changing the apn settings and I am pretty sure you will have data. I heard on another website that you CAN access the market and run other apps except for instant messageing.

I just ordered an unlock code from unlock-tmobileg1.com about 1 hour ago. I will let you know if they go through and give me the unlock code.

I don't want to receive text messages because I use a free text message service already. Is it possible to leave the SMS/MMS settings blank so that I won't receive any text messages? If so, would I be charged if, i.e. someone sends a text but it doesn't reach me. I have a G1 with AT&T. Thanks in advanced for the input.

**Update**
I went to the AT&T store today and asked them to remove my text messaging plan. They also restricted text messages from coming in. I will still get free AT&T text alerts, but other people will not be able to text me.

I just got my phone to work with the setting
mnc:410

I think there was a typo in the Access Point config above.

It's sooo nice to have data on this phone. Without data it's just a big heavy phone.
