When ever i've used it, it's been good. it's not like looking at a dvd, but then again, i didn't expect it to...some people are just picky i guess...

Thats not on 3g, its on WIFI.
when the phone is on 3g/EDGE, its a much lower quality and does not take up the whole screen (to save TMO Bandwith)
when it is on WIFI, it has normal resolution/bitrate, and takes up the whole screen.

I think some people are looking at the vids on EDGE.. the quality is not as good.

I think when you use the installed youtube app it recompresses videos for better quality, but when you hit it from the browser you get original quality.

Weather its from the browser or from youtube app its the same, you cannot play directly from the browser cause the java.
Only difference is 3g/edge = low bitrate, smaller resolution
wifi = normal bitrate, normal resolution

Wayne Wang just releases the first "feature length" movie on YouTube called "The Princess of Nebraska". Not sure what it's about, but if you do a search, it's there. Abut 120 minutes and on the G1 it looks fantastic, quality-wise.

So I put my phone on a Wi-Fi connection, and streaming a video right now. Great quality! Also it's streaming pretty well.

This is true. The iphone also suffers when using 3g, not as bad, but none the less it still isnt as good when its on 3g

You cannot NOT get the mobile version. YouTube app is the only flash video player on the G1, so even if you use the browser to hit youtube.com, the video will still stream through the app and you'll get the pixelated version.

What I am talking is how the author of this thread on the video when hit typed youtube.com on his G1, it got the desktop version.
When I type youtube.com on my G1, the format I get is bad. I dont even think is the mobile format, but everything is formatted in one line all the way down.
I want to be able to view the page EXACTLY as a desktop computer, and EXACTLY how the author of this thread was able to do it.
How can you accomplish this?

Never mind I found the problem.
When I went to SETTING on the browser, and unchecked "AUTO-FIT PAGES". Closed the browser again and when to youtube and it formatted me the desktop view.

Wow tech, you giving the G1 props, thought I would never see this.
When I first read people talking about bad video quality while on 3g I was puzzled, cuz I'd only had great quality. Eventually I watched a video that looked pretty terrible, so I'm guessing it depends from video to video.
