If I hold the HOME key down for a moment, it shows that I have a number of Applications open - Calendar, e-mail, maps, etc. How do I close the Maps application or any other application to save on battery life?
Thanks

Battery space? You mean life? XD
And as far as I know, you can't close out programs yet. Which I don't understand why.

When you hold the HOME button you are being shown your recent apps NOT your open apps. To show open apps download "Task Switcher"

You guys need to understand that this aint a Windows phone, Its the android. There's no need to close down apps. There's is alot of things you cant do with this phone that you can do with windows, like close apps. :)

THANK YOU! That is what I needed to know. I suspected this, but my 'Windows'-wired brain could not comprehend such an efficiency. :D

I noticed if you backtrack out of most apps it'll not show up on the task switcher (browser being the exception) but never have I had a slow down when I've had multiple apps open.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
I was stumbled. That is the neatest thing. Has anyone successfully synced with Mac OS?

You are correct, to a point.
I have a 16 Gig MicroSD card with 12 gigs of music on it. while/after running the music app, the device crawls and is slightly remedied by turning the sd card into file transfer mode and fully remedied by restarting the device. being given the option to close it down would help, or them fixing the music app would be even better ;)

Yeah, but why keep an app running if it's not in use? I just don't see the point in wasting CPU/memory/battery life.
I don't mind that I can't close them out, it would just be a handy function.

I was wondering about this as well. I generally find that the phone gets really hot if i have had it open for a while with alot of apps open in the taskbar application -
Is it confirmed that long pressing the hold button is RECENT apps for sure?

Ok so we all know how apps close... but what about if you don't want an app to close?

I don't get your question. If you don't want it to close then don't press the home button or the back button. Just keep using the app that is running.

sorry if i wasnt clear the first time. i know that the OS will close programs in the background as needed, but what if you dont want the program to be closed automatically? (hello aim! for example)

I think it's up to how the developer set it up.
Missed Call App - always on
Weather Channel App - only loads when you have it open

There's no need to close down apps.
Yes there is. Some programs can cause issues if left running sometimes. Beyond that I should be allowed to close apps I don't want open. Say for example if I went to Europe and wanted to to accrue massive roaming charges because some 3rd party app overrode my roaming settings. Yeah I'd like to be able to make sure that program was killed.
Before root was taken away I'd use the terminal programs to kill processes I didn't want running. Now I have to reboot my phone, rad.

Pressing the back button backs out of the application....thus closing it.
At least Task Manager doesn't display it if you back all the way out of it.
It's magic I tell ya.
MAGIC!

so what's the problem?
go to Terminal emulator -> enter 'ps' to show processes -> enter 'kill app_XX' (replace XX by number)

I think xdavidn88 has it - 'it's up to the developer', but my general assumption is that hitting the back button until you are back on the home screen will exit the application, where if you hit the home button some apps may continue to run in the background.
GPS Tracker does this, but as was mentioned above, Weather Channel closes regardless of how you get back to the home screen.
Would be nice if there was a recommended standard for developers to follow regarding this.
I haven't researched, so maybe a stupid question (they do exist), is there a best practices guide for developing apps for Android where something like this might be covered?

There are a handful of applications that leave open processes even if they don't show up in task switcher. Off the top of my head TuneWiki is the only one I can recall.

sadly that only works if you have root. That was one of the first things that pissed me off about RC30.

Could not kill pid XXXX: Operation not permitted.
That's the current pid for k9-sms for me.

Here's how apps work (if the app is built properly):
Pressing Home will leave the application running in the background, waiting for you to access it again via icon or similar.
Pressing back is suppose to kill the applications activity/intent that's running. So if you hit back all the way till you reach the home screen, it should be completely killed from running in the background. There are quite a few apps which don't follow this standard convention, and they use static variables and forget to clean them up on final().
Holding down the home button shows your most recent apps. Not running ones.
So, to close an app use the back button till it's gone. Hopefully that clarifies it a bit ;)
