You're having lunch with your friend, a big iPhone fanboy. You realize, as you pull your shinny, new G1 out of your pocket, that you'll have about 30 seconds to show it to him (her?) before they go off about how "well, it's not an iPhone, sure looks kind of large, yeah, that's nice......"

So, you turn on your G1, swipe your password to unlock the screen, and then..... ???

Which app do you launch to blow them away?

I just downloaded Shazam, tried it out, and it literally had me smiling!

Launch Shazam, turn on your radio, and find a song you like, but don't know the name. Shazam listens to the short (maybe 20-30 seconds) part of the song, then analyzes it, then brings up who the band or musician is who plays it, the name of the song, the album artwork, and goes on the internet and links to the singers MySpace page (if they have one), links to Amazon to download the song, if you're interested, and links to YouTube to allow you to play the video of the song, if there is one!

Now THAT is cool!

How many times do you hear a song you love, and keep hearing it on the radio, but never quite manage to catch the name of the song or who sings it? Now, you'll NEVER be left wondering!

So what apps have blow you guys away?

(Previously, and still, I was most blown away by ShopSavy and CompareShopper).

I went in to a local independant cell phone accessories store to look at cases. Started to talk with the owner, and asked him if he's seen the G1 yet. He said no.

Well, I was in the middle of looking at a leather pouch case for the G1, with belt clip. He was telling me it's $27.99.

I pulled out my G1, launched ShopSavy, and, while demoing the G1 to him, I scanned the bar code on the leather case. Within seconds, a list of websites appeared, one showing the case he was selling for $27.99, which they were selling for $10.99!

"Man... that's lower then my cost"! He offered the case to me for $19.00, after marveling at the G1.

I still walked out in the end, no case in hand.

Shopsaavy seems to have the biggest wow factor when I show my phone to people.

iPhone does have a Shazaam type service, so that's probably not going to impress them.

Although I agree...it is the thing that amazes me most.

I think the best thing to show an iPhone fan is Locale.

"Yeah it automatically goes to silent at the office for meetings, and when I get home it automatically turns on the WiFi and connects to my wireless."

"When I leave the city it sends a twitter letting everyone at the office know I won't be around."

I like locale, its just awesome. I tend to be very forgetful in the morning and used to never remember to turn my iphone on silent when I got to work. This app works great, as soon as i get to work, It changes my settings, and when I get home it changes them back. Awesome app.

I think Imeem is the best. Since I don't have a lot of mp3 files this allows me to create streaming radio stations and listen to my favorite artists at will, kinda like Pandora for your PC.

You see, people from Houston (myself included) are a very simple people. We are easily entertained by even the simplest of 'neat tricks'. So naturally, Compare Everywhere is the favorite. In our defense, we do have one of the largest malls in the US (The Galleria) so you can literally waste away an entire weekend of barcode scanning and frivolous comparison shopping and still have only scratched the surface.

The video player is also very cool, but the below software is the best I've seen that converts videos to 3g2 format to play on the G1.

Well. as far as what other people won't have... shop savvy is awesome.. saved $10 already. but love to use locale, GPS, and isafe all at once... i will be driving or even sitting in my house when it warns me about the weather and high crime neighborhoods near by. lol. just think it's neat... and lets me know when i'm going over 80mph. ha.

Well I had Shazam is on the iphone, and so is pandora (so that kinda rules out imeem to wow an iphone owner)...

I'd say locale is huge. ShopSavvy is up there as well. I think the notifications pull down shade might be the most simple thing on the phone, but it's growing to be one of my favorite things coming from an iphone. I love it!

I agree, just kinda slow for me.

I think you are confusing shazam with imeem. imeem is streaming radio. Shazam "listens" to a song and tells you the name of the song and the artist. imeem does not stream local stations. I believe it customizes a station for you based on the artists you like.

Not 3G, but GPS. Without GPS it would not know where you are to make the changes to settings based on your location.

Doesn't the iPhone have barcode scanners too?

I don't think I've found the app that'll blow my iPhone fan-boi friends out of the water yet. Sure, Locale is neat an' all, but, "meh, just use the volume switch and change profiles" is what they'd say. Don't get me wrong, I think the G1 has a lot more potential than the iPhone (or else I wouldn't have bought one) but as far as a "wow" app...not yet. However, soon as they get Widgets working and finally open the Market to all developers next week, I'm sure there'll be some cool stuff...at least that's what I tell them! :)

Actually, Locale does not require the use of GPS (see below: you can use the network settings to triangulate your position). However, for the most accurate location, you should have GPS turned on.

To use the network to determine your location (and have GPS turned off)

1) Go to Menu
2) --> Security and Location
3) --> Make sure to uncheck the "Enable GPS Satellites" and check "Use wireless networks"

This method will work, but wont be as accurate as using the GPS Satellite..but serves the purpose due to the fact that we're trying to change settings when we're in a certain neighborhood (not trying to change settings from one room to another room)

Pac man
Marvin ( needs some work)
Accu weather (basic but does what I need)
