Please help me and maybe others answer the above question.

I've been with Cingular/AT&T for 5+ years, from the beginning, wife and I share 850 roll over minutes for $69.98. With all the taxes and some SMS and an international call from time to time, we get a bill between $80-90. I'm not one to complain about their CS, because I have no need to call them. I really like the plan I have and would like to stick with it as long as possible.
I'm still using the phone (Nokia 6200) I got when I signed on. The phone is running out of life and it's time to get something new.

I was all exited about the "gPhone" and followed all the rumors for the past few months. I knew this was the phone I would leave Att for, but since the release I don't feel the same way about it, mainly due to the various flaws being reported. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Google and Android, I want to be in the first million to own one. It's just that, I'm not a person who uses IM, social sites, and I hardly ever send out SMS/MMS. I only get about 5 gmails per week and it's usually fun stuff I get copied on.

To get to the point, I need a phone to be in touch with family and work. I would like to be able to view websites in full HTML, google maps, be able to check my gmail and have access to my work OWA email.

Can someone recommend a phone right for me? I'm willing to wait couple months for a new release, but the sound quality on my current phone is really bad and my back up phone ate the pavement the other day. Are the WinMobile based phones really that bad? I'm worried the prices on the upcoming smart phones will be out of this world. I may just wait and see where Android leads and switch over to Tmo. I may also make peace with an iPhone  as it fits most of my criteria.

I really don’t want to be one of those people that say YES JUMP ON IT but I would love to help you make your choice on your new phone. I have not personally had AT&T so I can’t rate there coverage or anything. What I can rate is t-mobile and the coverage I get here and while traveling to vegas or where ever.

I live in southern Utah and I have tried about 4 different carriers and in 2004 found that t-mobile was right for me. And have been with them since. I rarely have any problems and if I do it’s something I have done not them but they always work with me on the phone A+++ CS they have even back changed my plan to save me money when my wife went WAY over our old texting limit (now changed to unlimited) so now onto the G1.

I have been through 8 phones in the last 2 years and over 20 in the last 5 years. When I look for I phone I first and foremost look for call quality for both ends. This phone has awesome sound (I am damn near deaf) and for those on the other end everyone has said it’s very clear and crisp.

Onto other features...

The internet is more then I could have hoped for. it is seriously already saved me what it would cost me a month just by being able to look up better prices online in those moments of "buy it now or somewhere else?" while renting red box movies looking up codes for free rentals as well as logging into my bank account to make sure I don’t go over what I have.

So far ANY website I can visit on my computer I can on my phone...

Shazam is awesome but I wondered if I would ever "really" use it... today in the car a song came on the radio I didn’t know the name and I wanted my wife to hear it so I opened up shazam and sure nuff found the song and tagged it so I could have my wife listen to it at home.

Went to a friend’s house tonight to play games. She just moved and I didn’t know where her home was. She was on MSN so I asked for her address I put it in the maps and I got directions.

In class I was given assignments and when they are due I put them in the calendar and when I am at home it is easy to get on my computer and see what I need to be working on.

I could go on and on the games are awesome and the things I keep learning are amazing. I love this phone it is by far the best I have ever used and the cool thing is it will only get better.

The ONLY down side to this phone at the moment is the battery and I only say this because ALOT of people are having problems with it but a lot are reporting theirs is fine as well. Mine works awesome (not the best I have ever used) I used it today from about 10 in the morning and now it is still at 18% not bad if u asks me.

So should you get this phone? You decide I love it and t-mobile this is by far one of the greatest things to help me throughout my day.

On a side note I made my g-mail account for this phone and don’t get any e-mails yet through it but it is still by far worth it.

Good luck to yak I hope whatever u end up doing works out great for you and your wife

Thanks for the lengthy reply. It makes lots of sense.
Once I decide to get the phone I will be able to do so much more with it. I imagine myself not have to turn on the PC at home and be able to do most of it on G1.
For now, I'll observe from the sideline how the kinks get worked out. The battery is my main concern, with my lock I'll get the lowest quality out there.

If your waiting a few months maybe they will have fixed or recalled the batteries by then? Either way things will have progressed lol

Just be patient. They will eventually come out with a device that utillizes android on your network. Rumors say that motorolla and keyocera are slated to start manufacturing phones with android.
The whole reason behind googles open source policy is that it will allow more manufactures to use the android OS, with no royalties or licence fees to google required (except for specific google apps).
So if you wait a couple months (if you can), you dont have to drop your carrier.

Not sure when the first news broke out about the big working on a phone. Back then people were saying G would be a new carrier. Since then I haven't signed up for a two contract to have an option to change.

I've waited this long, what's another couple months.

Can someone tell me if an unlocked G1 will work on ATT's EDGE network? I'm aware the 3G will not. I'm 20 miles away from Tmo's 3G network so I really don't care too much for it. I don't expect to be in my area anytime soon. Will I be able to have access to Android Market with an unlocked phone. This may be a solution to my dilemma, but the phone must have warranty.

If your going from that Nokia to the G1. Then your making the right choice, Believe me. ;)

The choice is right, I just need more time to digest it. If I do decide to make the switch, I'll be taking my wife with me, so she also has to decide on a new phone for the next two years. She just started a business and may be in a market for a BB or even the G1 if she likes it.

I had a chance to hold the G1 (turned off) for few minutes and must say that is feels good, maybe too delicate for my liking.
The keyboard I can get use to, the software related issues can be corrected, just the battery I'm waiting on. Extra batteries and a car charger is not an answer to the problem.

you're already with ATT, why not just get the iPhone? from what you want for a phone, its all present on the iphone. Since you dont have any issues with your current provider, I'd say don't switch.
