Heh I tried to make a phone call tonight in my car- at night- in the dark.

So I dial up, and its ringing.

Nobody is answering, its kinda late so i decide to hang up after the 2nd ring.

well- the phone went into "call mode" so the screens now off and the phone is 100% DARK.

The green/red buttons, home button, back button, menu button ALL DARK.

I CAN'T SEE A THING- and I'm fumbling around trying to get the call to END.

Roll the trackball. Nope- buttons don't light up.

UGH!

Finally, I stumble upon the menu button and manage to end the call.

DUH!- KEEP THOSE BUTTONS LIT UP DURING A CALL

at the very least- light them back up if I roll the ball..

Yeah, I wish the lights would come on bit easier, or if you touched the screen it would come back on, but maybe then it would effect the call when your face touches the screen. Not to nitpick, but if you could find the trackball easily how could you not find the menu button easily? Its right above the trackball!! (Insert humorous tone..)

Weird, I just tried that and mine light up when i roll the ball. I do agree tho, not going completely dark would be nice.

I understand they are trying to save battery life by turning of the light on the keys but it would be nice if they could keep the green and red keys lit at least during a call for when you are making calls at night.

I think the menu button is less likely to stumble upon or press while in a call so I think they did the right thing. U don't want to touch the screen or roll the track ball with your cheek to activate the screen.

Guys, we can't have G1 lit all the time and cry about battery at the same time.
I'm just saying.

Wait a second! I want every application, 3G, Wifi, and the back light on at all times, and have the battery last me at least two days, is that unreasonable?

I'm just saying- when theres a call goin on- turn the lights on.

or at the very least, turn em on if i touch the screen or roll the ball.

IMO the screen should go dark- if you then tap it, it come on in "lock" and you have to hit menu or click the ball to activate it.

it should never go 100% dark and stay that way.

the chin lights should always be on... reguardless. Tiny little led's like that running might cost you what, 20-30 seconds off the full batt life? Yes, it's easy to say "where is it" but keep in mind the phones been out less than a week, most of us are still used to our old phones... the fact it goes completely dark is kinda :/ At least, just make it a user setable option...

i don't understand why it can't be like my iphone.... using the accelerometer; when the phone is pulled away from the face it lights up.

I thought I was the only one who thought it was weird that the phone goes completely dark.....

Except the iPhone uses a couple of proximity sensors, not an accelerometer to pull this off. Perhaps the touch sensor combined with the accelerometer, along with some math, might work...

Honestly, Tiki, are any of your posts not complaints? I mean, now you're complaining that you can't find the send and end keys in the dark??? I don't think I've ever had a smartphone keep those lit.

Come on...lefty sendy/ righty endy.

Kudos. Hehe, i thought the exact same thing. It's not hard to find the endbutton just by feeling your way with your finger, it's at the bottom right part of the phone, how hard can he make it out to be?

If the trackball doesn't do it, then you know the unit is locked. Next, just press any other button for lights.

I'm having the opposite problem. My call/home/menu/etc buttons are always lit, though they do dim. It is such a drain on the battery. This is my replacement phone, my first one didn't do this, and man do I notice the difference in battery life... Anyone else have the problem of these buttons NEVER turning off?
