There seem to be a lot of conflicting reports regarding the G1 being compatible with T-Mobile's UMA (HotSpot@Home) service...

Anyone have a definitive answer or ideas regarding its availability?

Thanks,

Noah

I've heard that iSkoot doesn't do VOIP over wifi through Skype. In other words, even with a "Skype In/Out" account to receive and call numbers, iSkoot won't use wifi and bypass using plan minutes... If this isn't the case, that's great!

Is there any way that UMA functionality can be enabled or downloaded to the G1 or is it hardware based?

its all up to the tmo for that, the hardware is there, they just have to enable it......my gf lives in korea and i have been using iscoot to talk to her, just uses minutes but no long distance charges which is great for me

The HotSpot calling has been a real benefit for domestic calls for me. That's what I use it for. Obviously, Skype kicks butt for international, all the way...

I've been so spoiled by UMA on my 8320... For $10/month I can avoid a home line and make unlimited calls. It's really a top-notch service that would seem to go well with the G1. I guess it hasn't really caught on.

So to clarify, T-Mobile could enable UMA (@Home) functionality through an OTA update?

it could if tmo wanted it to but they have no plans to make this a UMA phone, i know how you feel i was the same with my 8320

UMA has become a total deal-breaker for me. That's a shame, because the G1 fits squarely into my vibe...

I can't imagine writing UMA code for Android is a wild, nutty ride compared to writing it for a handful of other, less-hospitable operating systems...

Are there any ideas as to why T-Mobile has no plans to make this a UMA handset?

Is this something that could be written into a third-party application?

This is also a deal breaker for me. My 8320 works great and I love it. However, the G1 does everything I want and then some.

I use UMA all the time and where I'm at I only get a GPRS signal if i'm lucky so it's kind of needed. Hopefully tmo will come around and spend some time enabling this.

I would also miss a 3.5mm headphone jack and the ability to use the phone as a modem for my laptop.

Those 2 features that I use almost daily and would have a hard time going without.
