You won't have service after that.

my thoughts exactly, the first 7 days are free after that they begin billing you for the data.
you may want to call CS back and add it again...

You know if you accidently click browser or something it will start billing you and if you download an app youll be charged. and if you download an app that uses data you will be charge. $25 a month is a good deal for something like this, even tho you think your not using it. post back when you realize your plan back fired.

with the way TMobile support is i cant see it being that hard to get rid of the data plan. Go on to the website change your phone or use your old TMobile phone(borrow one from a friend or buy one from craigslist for $10 for new customers) call 611 and tell them you are selling your G1 on Ebay and you have a phone that doesn't need data. i am sure they will take it off.

I called TMobile after they fixed the $5.99 proxy and got the PDA support to give me full data for the weekend...but the weekend lasted about 9 months!

They really appreciate their customers and most of the techs will bend a lot of rules or get their supervisors to bend them for you.

I haven't read the TOS, but does it say the 2 year contract is for being a customer or that you will have data and be a customer for 2 years?

jeffsaha

is there a gps mapping program available or that will be readily available that is not google maps? because google maps does not store the maps on the device from what i know. so it uses the said data, that the OP said he decided to take off, to pull the maps. plus a handheld gps device is like $100...one wonders what people are thinking sometimes. unless the OP is selling the device, then awesome job on removing the data plan? :)

Im not quite sure what he is saying about taking off the data plan or using it without one a but confusing if you ask me but, I do know your phone will not work with another sim card in it from a different provider, yes it can be unlocked and I guess technically you could use it as a dummy phone to make calls but you will not be able to use anyones 3 g network without a tmobile data plan. Why not just buy one of those modded I phones or something, seems like a lot of trouble for nothing, but hey I/m with cow on this one..whatever floats your boat, just seems a little overboard for what you want to do, plus you may get caught in some loophole anyways , then is it really worth it? I doubt it

I want same thing here. I want the g1 without a data plan just b/c i'm getting two of them. I want to sell one and make some $$$ for it. The other one, for me, i'll keep the data plan for that one. Come on, you probably make around $400 dollars for it. With that, i could get a 16gb micro sd card and still have some left over.

So, how did you remove that data plan???

I'm sure T-Mobile is going to catch on to this. I logged into My T-Mobile, my account still shows my phone as the Dash, with my National Business Plan of 300 min for $29.99, and T-Mobile web for $5.99 per month.

3G data is working great on my G1, actually faster than my iPhone 3G.

10-24-2008, 01:28 PM
If you remove the G1 data plan and use the Total internet or TZONE, and use something else then you won't get future updates, this came straight from T-Mobile USA corporate this afternoon.

Word of mouth from a corporate employee to me who knows what he is talking about 100%, a good friend, so I don't have any documentation or "links". Not everything is on the internet. Take it or leave it just passing the word, out.

I don't see what the big deal is. T-mobile is only looking for a plan- some sort of contract. Data is a bonus, but the money is in voice. The cheapest voice plan is all they ask for. They want to bundle data and all sorts of extras, but they can't force you to take data.

I had a sidekick lx, and 2 non-data phones which could be upgraded to the g1 for the 179 price , plus the 18$ upgrade fee (why quote 179?) plus tax. came to $211 per. The store said they HAD to sell me the data plan. One of these went to a buddy who traded me a bunch of stuff for the g1, and I was turning off the lx data, so it was really easy to talk to Tmobile and get them to do everything I wanted. They did say something to the effect that the g1 is not intended to work properly without data, or something to that effect, but I was able to say "I understand" and move past that.

SO, to sum it all up, as I left the tmobile store, I had all three lines with data- 2 with G1 data and 1 with sidekick data. After a bit of talking with the 1-800 customer service, I had 1 line with data (the old sidekick number, which I took the sidekick SIM and used it immediately in the G1) and the other were as before, no data.

In the end, all they care about is that you are "on contract", but they don't care which contract.

I'm pretty sure you can get a camera phone that plays MP3s for free from T-Mo. If that's really what his father was looking for, I think he got screwed out of $179.

Thanks for the info. I've still been trying to figure out if the data plan is part of the 2-year renewal, or if it's just the traditional 2-year voice renewal. I have 4 on a family line and only needed 2 upgrades (for myself and my brother) but wanted all contracts to end at the same time, just in case. I've spoken to 3 CS reps and they've all been wishy washy on the answer, though professionally answered.

at the risk of making people angry..

I think this phone would be cool with out a data plan.. I'm a cube dweller and I have wifi at home and at work that I can piggy back on. the amount of time I will actually spend on the 3g network might be less that 10% of the time.. that being said, I still like the phone for all it can do.. apps, music, video(watched starwars on it yesterday)camera, full keyboard... and so on. everything I want to do I can do on wifi.. I think you can do everything except buy mp3's wtih amazon, but for people like me I would still want the phone without 3g because im in a wifi network 22 hours a day.

some people just don't understand that threads about having the G1 without the data plan are helpful to some. and they keep flaming about the G1 is meant to be with a data plan. it's just that some people don't NEED one, not WANT one. surely, they have their reasons like me for instance. i am in a wifi place 75% of the time. i have the tmobileweb with EDGE which is great when i'm outside. and i don't live in a 3G area. and not til tmo's 3G coverage is big enough and that applications for the android is as big and useful as symbian's, i'm not getting their services.
coming from an N95 (still have it), i'm loving this phone more everyday and i can just see the android's potential to be great really fast. with the N95 i.m able to use truphone for free VOIP calls to my family in the Phils and in the states without using my minutes, walkinghotspot as a hotspot ( i have AT&T's medianet for $20/mo go phone) among other things

OK I work at Tmo CS for one, and dont really get it. The only time the data sevice was a required was with preorder. Other than it is OPTIONAL and can be requested to be removed via CS or you can log in to your MyTmobile and remove it at any time. Though its kinda silly to have the handset without the data, but hey whatever floats your boat so boasting of how you lied and trick CS to take it off is really nothing you just had a misinformed rep if they said they couldnt take it off they were wrong. But in closing if your dad does use the G1 and and extra charges incure or the phone doesnt work please dont call CS to complain of overage/usage charges or that the phone doesnt work. As fair as a handset that would have been cheaper and have web,GPS' bluetooth, and MP3's should have tred a Sony Ericson TM506 has all the features that youd have wanted and and if you got the G1 for 179.99 you would have been eligable for full discount were I do belive that phone would have been free.

r u certain? considering that u're a CS, i'm inclined to believe u. others had to resort to tricking the CS for them to be able to have the data plan taken off. in my case, i did not have to do that because i was able to not select the data plan in my proeordering. having talked to multiple CS's, i have the impression that they all have different understandings(depends on who or what they have been briefed) of how to handle the G1 in regards to requirement of the data plan.
i think the final answer would be on the 29th when the free data will be closed. i'm hoping that tmo does not automatically include the data plan on my acct as what i've been hearing.

Yes I do work at Tmo CS in a call center in Kansas and the features are optional so if you dont want call after or go to my tmobile and remove it. Again with out the feature the G1 may not function fully but thats on you.

wow well i wished that i had you over the phone and didnt have to do all that so it didnt seam to be like... an exploit to me lol
the thing is i know you can take it off i just had some very stubborn rep
hey if it was easy there wouldnt be thread on "help i dont want data plan"
i mean you dont see thread like "hey guys i setup my voicemail" right well maybe one or two but probably with no post in there right unless there are revolutionary changes in setting up your voicemail.
anywho, i wish that all rep a tmo would have been on the same page and when i ask to have data taken off, the anwser would have been "absolutly sir, but i must warn you, that most of the funct. will not work... blablabla.."
and i would have been like "ok"
end of the story.
no post no fust happy rep with a happy costumer
i mean i even get called a liar for saying that data is off
since u r with tmo
maybe you can do AC a favor and take care of those that dont want the data and help them out... just a thought

oh yea that sony dont have wifi...
not a real gps
fugly
bottom line i dont mind or he doesnt mind paying 180
i mean according to u it would have been hassle free anyway

Spymaster101
10-25-2008, 05:41 PM
So straight forwardly:

If i get the G1, will it work without a data plan? Why do I not want the data plan you ask? Well apparently I'm still under the control of my dad and he won't allow me to get/keep a data plan; yes, he's very super paranoid. So, when I went to the T-Mobile store, the T-Mobile rep said that, without the data plan you would only be able to dial 911. Is that true? Cause if it is, then obviously it would be of no use to me.

Thanks! In advance. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/vbiis/images/smilies/thanks.gif

You can cancel the data plan after you activate it, just call customer service.

Spymaster101
10-25-2008, 05:46 PM
Yea, I figured after reading through this whole thread. lol

But, after I cancel it, can I only call 911 like the T-Mobile rep told me?

unknown.soul
10-25-2008, 05:50 PM
You can only call 911 if you haven't activated your phone yet.

Spymaster101
10-25-2008, 05:57 PM
So that means that after I activate it I can still text, call, etc. but just no internet, email etc.?

If I'm getting repetitive, sorry.

Do you know if you got charged for a data plan? Because according to some of the previous posts, T-Mobile is giving 7-days of free data.

rdgdmd
10-25-2008, 06:17 PM
yes they are giving away 7 free days. mine stops at the 29th. that got me paranoid for a while and i keep calling tmo and checking my.tmobile every now and then. no data charges so far.

Spymaster101
10-25-2008, 06:22 PM
So would you suggest that I wait until after the 29th to see if anybody who canceled the data plan got charged for the data plan?

darthbuddha
10-25-2008, 06:56 PM
Yes data feature is free till the 29th. After that it will migrate to the G1 data feature if you dont want the data you dont have to keep it but for full function of the phone you may want to keep it. if not just log into your mytmobile online and remove or call CS and have them remove it.

getting charged b4 the 29th for data is unlikely since it was pretty much consistent to what everybody knows, so i'ts gotta be more than just a rumor.
on and after the 29th i'll still be calling the CS and keep on checking my plan summary to make sure they don't add it to my plan.

xravexboix
10-26-2008, 09:42 AM
Since you selected a plan at pre-order, it will automatically migrate. You can call CS and let them know that you do not want it. They will go leaps and bounds to say it's required to have the data plan to use the phone (period), but many have tested it and the phone works just fine as a phone (with wifi). The data plan is not a part of the contract.

You'll likely be prorated for the day... but "oh no!! $1!" hehe.

I ordered my g1 on a different line on what i am actually using it on. Will they change the line i ordered it on or will they realize i am actually using it on a different line? The line i am using it on has vpn internet on it and it works fine with the g1 so far. No glitches or anything. Worse case, on the 29/30th, and they do add the g1 to the ordered line, i will call them up and tell them to remove it since that line doesn't have the g1 on it. And if the g1 works fine with the vpn, screw it, i will just stick with that. Save $5

You'll be fine. Once "it hits", it'll likely be defaulted on the line it was ordered on unless you've already called to swap it over. Worst case, they have to swap it when you call and no extra charges are incurred since it's the same plan, simply on the wrong line.

I ordered the G1 on a new line and am using the G1 on my old line. I had to actually call 611 to get the ! service taken off the old line and probably could have gone without adding it to my old line.
