Thats not true. Took my card right out of my unlocked iPhone & I have 3g service. My sim is so old the #'s are gone off it.

It's possible that you may need to get a new SIM card, depending on the condition of it. If it's old and a little roughed up, it may require a new SIM card. It's hard to say if that's the problem or not.

she's either lying or doesn't know what she's talking about, the phones are the ones that have the 3g capavilities not the sims cards (if it was sim cards people that had 3g phones before the iphone 3g came out would've have been able to get 3g on the first gen iphone)

I can't guarantee you that you don't need a newer sim card, but I can guarantee you that you don't need a "3G Sim Card" LOL.
Some Tmo reps are morons. My SimCard is originally from an HTC Wing then a 2G Blackberry, and I didn't get a new SIM card with my G1 either, and it works . . . well, it works pretty well.
True story.

My g1 came with a sim card, but i haven't used it. My old sim card works fine with the 3g, but it seems about the same speed as the 1st gen iphone so who knows.
I think she was confused with ATT, who requires that you use a sim card thats 3g supportive. If you look at the new iphones the sim cards say 3g on it. The sim card i got with tmobile doesn't

That's the funniest thing I've ever heard. I just popped in my old sim card that I've had for 5 or 6 years, and 3g has been good to go
Now if the new sim card in the box could give me better battery life, i'd give it a try. haha =P

There are old sim cards with older technology, but they are WAY old (I had to get a new one recently because I got a BB before my G1) but if yours is fairly new you shouldn't have any problem.
i had my sim for 4 years, and i couldnt send out text messages with my new g1
i went into the retail store, and got a new sim for free, and texts worked fine.
all my data services worked fluently right out of the box, on my old sim

Okay Sharon from tmo support is the biggest idiot I have ever talked to.
First she says wow its amazing you can connect to 3g with an non 3g sim card, she says its the sim card that makes 3g possible. I told her that I am 99% sure she is wrong but she tells me she works for tmobile and knows, so umm okay I guess the thousands of people now on 3g with an old 3g card are dillusional.
So my phone starts working after 2 minute battery removal, and shes like is there anything else I can do?,, umm yeah how about gwetting me that special 3g sim card i NEED to get 3g.
Then shes like well since your sim card connects "you dont really need a new one do you" although yours doesnt connect as fast as it could.
Well, I tell her "why would I buy the brand new phone to go with the brand new 3g network and not want the fastest speed"
she says I will send you right over to customer service to get a new 3g sim card, okay thanks.
So hey cust service person, your tech support told me I need a new 3g sim card to go with my new 3g phone.
"What... there is no 3g sim card"
JESUS!!!! What the hell is going on at T-Mobile!!!

She's full of it. I was thinking we would switch off sim cards entirely, but I was wrong.
Have her give it to you in writing and promise something in writing as a reward if she was lying. Let's see if she's pushing a sale or seriously taught that a new SIM is needed.

My sim is 7 years old from back in the voicestream days. My G1 works great and gets all the 3G data goodness.
