Got a Defy on T-mobile contract and I'm trying to select my own message tone, one I downloaded ages ago. I've noticed when using Astro that the files are located in /system/media/audio. All files in system are Read only so I cant copy/paste into it. Also the phone will only use files that are in the phone's memory rather than the memory card. Is this a Tmobile thing or an Android thing and how can I get round it?

Natively, you can't. Open up the Market and download a free app called Ringdroid. It will allow you to select part or all of the MP3 you wish to use and save it as an alert.

Well tried that, sort of worked except instead of the tonei now get a noise like someone rustling paper in your ear, even tho the wave file plays normally in the music player

That's weird. I've never run into that problem with Ringdroid. Try it again just to be sure.

I've tried it like 6 times, same result. Tried deleting the wave and downloading it from somewhere else, same result.

What file format is the sound you're working with? If it's a WAV, convert it to MP3, then try again with Ringdroid. I don't think it works with WAV files.

Ah yes it is indeed a wav file! Can Ringdroid do the conversion?

I don't believe so. Put the file on your computer and use a free audio editing tool such as Audacity to convert it.

Looks like you're going through a lot of trouble. Call t=mobile and ask for the best rout to ringtones
