No, the view only turns to landscape when the keyboard is opened.

I do believe there is an app in the making to make it happen by just tilting, though.

are you wanting to turn it for when your browing through the web? If so hit menu while in the browser and go to more then scroll down to flip orientation and there you go

Nope, no setting that you're missing.

Google developers said that they felt most users would prefer that the screen NOT switch, based on the orientation of the device! Not sure what users they were speaking with!

That's the bad news.

The good news? Well, the G1 comes with the hardware (accelorameter) which is needed to implement that feature. Now all we need is a software developer to implement it! I'd think that someone would implement that... honestly, I can't believe that Google goes to the trouble to include an accelorameter, but doesn't include that feature! They could have had a preference, and allowed the users to turn it on or off!

Anyway, that's the current status of that function.

Being a Unix/Linux based OS (I think??), shouldn't there be a way to access the system via command line? If so, couldn't hardware features be enabled that way?

I, for one, am glad that the phone does not automatically tilt. That was the first thing that annoyed me when I was playing around with friends/family's iphones.

Why? I cannot think of a single reason why you would want the screen to stay in portrait mode when you have it turned on its side. Enlighten me.

For me (i have an Ipod Touch) I dont think the orientation flipping is needed. Its annoying sometimes when you accidentally turn the phone and the screen just starts flipping however, i would rather have a button for flipping the screen when i need to.

They could have at least given us the option instead of choosing for us. Especially if they are in the works for an on screen keyboard
