I want to buy a g1 through t-mobile.com, however i don't want to get a data plan. i have wifi access all over my campus, theres just no need to pay $25 a month when i have a better free service. theres also no 3g coverage in my area. If i buy a no contract phone on t-mobile's website, can i use all of its features just by using wifi? or do i need to buy a data plan in order to be able to "activate" the phone and use it?

I am in the exact same boat my campus has plenty of wireless service but i am still getting a plan because without one the phone service won't even work and I may be wrong but I don't think you will be able to access the features with wifi without a data plan

but do you have a data plan now? or did u just get the phone with no contract? i just need to know if the phone and its features will work without using t-mobile's network.

here is your answer and a solution
http://www.loveforbiz.com/getting-started-with-an-unactivated-t-mobile-g1
Insert friends activated T-mobile SIM into G1 along with battery
Power on and wait for setup screen
Go through setup process to link any Gmail account
Go to Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi Settings > Enable Wi-Fi
Connect to nearby Wi-Fi network if one is available
Optional: Stop the phone from syncing with Gmail account by going to Data Synchronization and unchecking Auto-sync, Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts
Once done, take out friends SIM card and insert unactivated SIM that came with G1
