View Full Version : Has anyone seen an unlocked G1??

I'm trying to find out whether there is a possibility (yet) to get my hands on a G1, which has in fact been SIM unlocked.
So far, I haven't heard a single story about anyone getting a SIM unlock code from T-Mobile to unlock their G1 in order to be able to use a non-TM SIM card.
Am I wrong?
Until I hear that it's actually possible, I won't jump on any of the eBay offers from sellers telling me they will receive an unlock code 24/48 hours after I buy a G1 from them, no matter how convincing they sound!

Unlock codes from T-Mobile usually don't get released until three months after the phones are. Then we can call and they have to release them.
Not sure about how we access them beforehand.

i don't think any other wireless carrier's 3g will work on the g1 anyway... whats the rush... at least in the US that is

THey are all over Ebay right now. I know t mobile wont release them but im pretty sure Google made it super easy to unlock because they are all about freedom. But go and check em out.

yeah - one guy says this regarding an unopened G1:
" This phone is UNLOCKED to any GSM carrier worldwide, just put in your SIM card and you are good to go (no tubosim or anything like that)."
what the hell is tubosim? and surely thet don't come unlocked from the factory??
i'm trying my brother's ATT sim on my G1 tonight just to see.

just to let you know, even if somehow your ATT card works in the g1, t-mobiles 3g runs off a different frequency than att's 3g, so no internet access through your sim card ever

Here's an old engadget article concerning unlocking and tethering...
http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/23/t-mobiles-cto-on-g1-unlocking-and-tethering-plus-a-few-detai/
More interestingly, buyers would be able to have access to a "contract free" G1 (with a price point of $399), and could unlock the device with T-Mobile's blessing after 90 days. Brodman also said that the company's policy of unlocking phones for customers in good standing wouldn't change for this phone.
basically 90 days after initial purchase you can unlock it or go to your local T-Mobile retailer and ask them to do so long as you are on good terms with them.

I just unlocked a G1 phone about an hour ago. I did not have a chance to use it on AT&T though, as I needed to ship it out overnight, all I did was enter the code and get confirmation that it was network unlocked. I received the unlock code from T-Mobile as I had been a customer already for 90 days, and I had never requested an unlock from them before. I requested the unlock code on Tuesday, and got it in my email this morning. Interestingly enough, I had paid an ebay user to get the unlock code for me as well, but he replied back to me this morning that he was unable to get the code and he refunded my payment.... I think the only way to get the code for now is through T-Mobile. The rep I initially spoke with told me they weren't doing codes for the G1, but I corrected him and said that their CTO said yes, they are, and he submitted the request for me... so if you call and the rep says no, kindly correct them.
Good luck!

Cool to see it unlocked that fast, so how's it like on other networks?

I called before ordering my G1 to make sure I could unlock it immediately since I go home (UK) a lot and they said it wouldn't be a problem. Better not be. Will see in a month...
Oh and as for trying my bro's SIM card on G1, yeah I heard they were incompatible as far as G3 was concerned - just wanted to see for the hell of it.
Finally - how did you get 3 G1s on one line? And all unlocked? You must be a charmer...

For those of you that are unlocking your phones and selling them--- how are you getting out of the data plan contract? How can I cancel mines?

The voice plan is under contract and it seems the data is not. All of T-Mobile's advertisements for the phone are inconsistent. They all have different fine print
"*With 2-year voice contract"
"*With 2-year voice and data contract"
Plus I'm sure there would be tons of articles in regards to the required 2-year commitment to a data plan... especially since tons of articles sprung up overnight in regards to the 1GB/month 3G usage cap (since removed).
Conflicting information from different CS reps is definitely driving me crazy though.
I guess we'll all see after month's end.

A quick reply to my own thread.
I'm typing this on my newly purchased, unlocked and subscription free US G1, using my Norwegian SIM but currently roaming in France.
Everything (including 3G) works except:
MMS
Setting voicemail number
International characters in web forms
