I'm having the same optonline problem also.. I was'nt sure if it was just my G1 or a widespread issue.. I would appreciate any help.. My unit also freezes for at keast 30 seconds after i go to the home screen after using the web.. Any clues to that issue. thanks

I did, but I got it working. Well optonline's email is a POP3 type so what you have to do when you get to the outgoing server menu go to the bottom and take off the sign in auto option. From there everything's a go.

I'm still having the same problem, goes through the incoming server
settings just fine. keeps getting hung up on outgoing server settings.
I have the "require sign-in" unchecked but I keep getting the message
"cannot connect to server. (Unable to open connection to SMTP server)"

My wife is having the same problems with her phone with her yahoo account.

What the hell am I doing wrong??

try these settings
POP3 incoming server mailhost.optonline.net with port address of 110
outgoing mailhost.optonline.net with port address at 587

try these settings
POP3 incoming server mailhost.optonline.net with port address of 110
outgoing mailhost.optonline.net with port address at 587

I'll be damn! That worked. Out going address was set to 25.
where did you get 587 from? What did I miss??
Anyway, Thanks!!

So ya, I have done all of these things [mailhost.optonline.net / port 587 / uncheck the sign in box] and it still reads "connection error" when I try to send emails. I have been receiving emails since day 1, but have not yet gotten one sent out. I use a company POP3 account...any suggestions?

Probably the mobile server rejecting your company's smtp settings. Change your outgoing settings to the ones provided by your mobile phone company or switch all your mail over to Gmail or similar. Gmail can fetch mail from other pop3 accounts.

Nevermind I figured it out. If anyone else has this problem, and uses Earthlink as a mail server (optonline as the provider) then the following from Earthlink's trouble shooting page will fix it so outgoing mail actually goes out:

"I can receive email, but not send it. What should I do?
Check to make sure that your email program has the outgoing (SMTP) sever set up correctly.

The Outgoing SMTP server should be smtpauth.earthlink.net (same for all email addresses)
Put a check in the box for “My Outgoing SMTP server requires authentication” (or something similar) and enter your entire email address and password for authentication.
Set the Outgoing SMTP port number to 587. This is usually found under your email software’s Advanced Account settings section."

Inbound is standard - mail.optonline.net, outbound is generally the problem - it is mail.optonline.net but the port is 587. Do not use secure connection or verify certificate.

thank you thank you thank you Lex! I've been trying for two full days to figure out why my new IC wouldn't accept my Opt email settings. Tried you suggestion and ta-da! it worked!
One less thing to say my BB was better at....

Hi all; addtional solution to try: I contacted Cablevision, and was informed that in order to use port 587, sign-in is required, and you must enter your username and password in order to send email. I reset my outgoing settings, and voila! I can now send outgoing email again. Hopes this helps.
