I think there is a way to export them out of outlook into a csv file and import them into your gmail account. I manually moved mine to clean them up but I read somewhere it can be done

You can export them as a CSV file and import them into Gmail.

just log onto Gmail and enter all your contacts into Gmail via computer. It'll automatically sync up w/ your G1.
In my scenario I have about 600 phone contacts that I keep compiled on various formats. Pending on which phone you have you most likely could import them all onto a notepad. Gmail will sync all those contacts to your phone no problemo!

Nope, you can go to gmail faqs, they explain how can you export your contacts to a text file and import them back on gmail

You can, as I did, sync your contacts from your phone to your sim card. Then do the following steps:
Contacts > Menu > Setting > Sim Contact Importer , done!
Hope it helps.

I have two problems with contacts....
1. I manually enter a contact on my G1. Within minutes it is erased. Only one contact has remained. I don't know why.
2. My Gmail account has contacts but they have not synced to my G1. I have contacts set to sync automatically. I even selected, "Sync Now" but nothing came over. I am using a brand new sim card, if that matters. I have read that Gmail contacts should sync automatically to the G1.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Follow-up:
I created a new group in Gmail Contacts (online) called G1. Within seconds that group WAS displayed on my phone.
I entered a new test contact (to check on problem #1) and will see if it sticks. So far, so good :)

I just picked up my G1 today, and was able to figure out how to export my outlook contacts in a CSV format, but many of the numbers show up with no names attached to them. So I have to manually search outlook to identify the numbers then go into Gmail and add the contact details. The common thread seems to be orphaned numbers are those that I added in my Dash phone and sync'd into outlook as oppossed to those that I entered manually into outlook seem to work ok. Has anyone had this problem? Because there are ALOT of numbers and it's really difficult to identify them.
you can edit the csv file. change the headers to just "names" vs what outlook makes them "first" "middle" and "last"

g1/andriod needs to pull their head out of their rear and get a program that syncs to outlook. Most of us dont' have an exchange server (there's 1 of those out now). AND more importantly, anyone coming from a big data phone (my case a sidekick), no one saves their info on sim cards, as i had 700+ contacts. I"m a dj and promoter. the sim card simply doesn't hold all the information i like to have, ie birthday, & extra info.
I exported from outloook to a csv file...however all of my contacts weren't tidy. so i opened it up in microsoft's excel. Please be careful doing this, as any number with a "+" in front of it ie "+17209794566"....excell thought it was a formula math problem & messed up quite a few of my numbers. i realized this too late, instead of keeping it a text only field.
I also found you need both first & last name's in order to keep the g1 from wigging out and only having a 7209794566 only, no name,no number even tho it was there in the csv file. very weird.
i also think there's a slight glitch when the contact (in my case via text message) their phone will text me as +17209794566, not show up any name...however that exact number is entered in my address book as 720-979-4566. somehow that +1.....is throwing the phone off to find the contact in my phone.
Also, make sure in your gphone, when in contacts, click the menu button , then display group, then make sure the green dot is on "all contacts". you'll see if you made any errors.
Now, really annoying, the g1 does not have as many place fields for contact information like outlook, or my former old sidekick. Its' got them in a notepad format in the extra field......ug. It would be nice if they tested these transitions so they'd go over smoothly.
